don't be a jackass

that says nothing, nor is there any strong proof that she was personally injured because of the sticker in that article, nor would anybody in the obama campaign condon such an action or knowingly fratrinize with a person who did such a thing,

Let me see, there are over 300 million people in America, and i'l estimate that about a third of them support obama and a third of them support mccain, just to pull a number out of my ass.

How many crazy people do you think we can find on both sides of the aisle in 200 million people?

The Obama campaign has not been inciting hatred, and that is the distinction you should be seeing, as opposed to the palin and Mccain rallies, which seem to have brought out some crazies...

to the point where FINALLY, Mccain had to show some integrity and tell his audience that Obama is a family man, and that he's a decent person.

I commend him for doing so, but its his own campaign that has been feeding it.

You can't say the same for Obama. He hasn't attacked Mccain's patriotism, he hasn't suggested that Mccain doesn't believe in country first, and so on and so on.

Its anecdotal.

It means little in the grand scheme of things, yet serves to illistrate (rightly or wrongly) a concern or issue.

In this case it serves three roles.

First, it plays into the whole 'Barrack America' sentiment. We all recall the textbooks with the Obama Chapter, the kids singing the Obama praise song in school, the uniformed kids praising Obama, Berlin and 'Greek column' moments and so on.

Second, it serves to illistrate the violence and abuse that seems to be so common in this election. Cars with McCain stickers vandalized, Republican poll workers attacked by Democratic Poll workers, kid suspended from school for wearing McCain/Palin shirt, etc.

Third, this happened in western PA, region that Murtha said was full of racist rednecks and that Obama claims is filled with folks clinging to their guns and religeon. In other words a generally conservative blue-collar Democratic region that is suddenly 'in play'. If McCain wins PA, it will be because of western PA.

So right or wrong, this incident plays into those three areas.

This is just more of the hysteria the RNC is trying to drum up to scare people.

While I abhor what happened to this young lady, there is NOTHING to suggest that this has anything to do with Obama.

How is violence akin to love and praise?

And you seriously think this street guy was listening to Fox News and heard what Murtha said?

And still Hero, for everything you cite I could easily give you an example from the other side, and the distinction would still be that Obama's campaign has not fostered anti-Mccain sentiment, sentiment that goes to the heart of Mccain's motive, and patriotism.

You are, to put it lightly, full of shit, but you do keep yourself well polished.

I've read 4 different reports of this incident this morning (and at this point they don't differ much), and several things strike me as...funny...

1.)Rob first, then take a few extra seconds to mutilate as sort of an after-thought? If my original intent going in was to rob somebody at knife-point, I think my next original intent would be to get the hell away from the scene of the crime. I would have to be a hell of a lot more devoted to Obama than I am to hang around carving initials into the face of my victim. I would find this aspect a little more believable if the order of events was beating/monogramming followed by "Oh, and BTW, give me your dough."

2.) The photo on the 'Net shows what looks like a backward "B" on the lady's right cheek. It does not - in that photo, anyway - look like a deep cut; it looks more like a B-shaped scratch. I think you would have to take a little time and be careful to produce what's in the photo, that is, a fairly bloodless scratch instead of a jagged, bloody mess. And I'm pretty sure that scratching a "B" backwards into someone's cheek is at least a little more time-consuming than doing it forwards. (According to a couple of articles I read, no official police photo had yet been taken of the victim, and I haven't run across a credit yet for the photo that's appearing online.)

Okay, there was a 3.), but it got annexed by 2.). Anyway, echoing FMF, if this attack is the real deal, then my sympathies to the young lady and I hope they get the rat-bastard who did it. But I'm smellin' a whole lot of "Now, wait a minute" comin' off this scenario...

It was like that when we got here!

That is true to some extent.

But the spin on Barrack is 'the chosen one'...seen very much as a negative cult of personality that is frightening to some people. McCain has no such image. In fact this image problem is a BIG part of the reason Barrack has failed to break away in this overwhelming Democratic climate (Berlin nearly sank him). One could reasonable argue that, but for the economic crisis, these polls are likely just as close, but with McCain on top.

One of the biggest mistakes the Democrats made was in not painting Palin with the 'chosen one' brush. Choosing instead to paint her as 'just another idiot' (which anyone who has seen her interviews, with one exception, or seen her speak in person can dispute). The personal attacks on her intellegence and character hurt the Democrats by elevating her status, making the public take real interest in her, and setting her up to exceed expectations again and again. They should have painted her as a media hound, cashing in on her 15minutes and as the conservative 'chosen one' and Hillary wanna-be which would have diluted many of the 'Barrack America' fears people have.

But Palin is the single most negative factor right now of the Mccain campaign Hero...people have not disagreed with those democratic attacks on Palin.

If your point is that Mccain and his campaign have succesfully painted Obama as the chosen one, well who the hell's fault is that?

He certainly hasn't said it personally, except for when he was mocking it at that fundraiser.

If some people see him as representing hope and a better tomorrow, who can blame them, really.

But Obama's politics are hardly messianic. He's more conservative than Presidents we've had in the past. He's just well left of Bush and Mccain, and that aint hard.

It smells a lot like those Swastika defacements which always seem to wind up actually committed by folks wanting to play victim to pull on the sympathy heartstring to me.

To be downright crassly blunt, I'm pretty sure she did that herself as a way to "justify" the unreasoning hatred she feels for anyone who doesn't see the world the way she does - I've seen that shit often enough to be fairly certain of it.

But on the other hand, lemme also be crassly blunt and straight fucking tell you - the Modern Republican Party *DESERVES* the level of hate you described, fully and utterly, due to their lies, economic destruction, invasions and slaughters, shovelling our money into the pockets of the rich, letting a buncha fucking terrorists loose on us under the guise of official sanction just because they supposedly work for us, never putting the towers back up, fucking over any right to privacy or to be left alone, letting our whole infrastructure crumble till it rots, I could go on for four HOURS and never run out of gas or repeat myself...

I say you should feel damn LUCKY that Liberals in general, and as a whole, are a merciful bunch, cause while I would not participate, if the rage ever tripped the million-monkey point and they started lynching you treacherous bastards, I would not participate, but damned if I would stop it either.

You and your ilk have preached hatred and fear until the whole damned country is reeking with it, and then have the nerve to bitch when it winds up coming full circle and is directed at the very folk who've given the people the most cause to hate and fear them ?

Don't dare come bitchin to me when the crows YOU and yours set loose come back to roost on your own balcony, cause you ain't got no-one else to blame, when it comes down to it.

So far as I've seen it, Obamas mostly preachin hope, rebuilding, and reconciliation, and you oughta be damn thankful for it - cause if you left it up to me, I'd rather have Sharpton or Farrakhan all up your ass instead, see how YOU like being on the receiving end of hatred and bigotry for once.

Don't come lookin for sympathy here, bub.

I'm not going to speculate what happened to her. We got a preliminary reporting on it, so I won't jump to this woman having done this to herself. If this happened to her, and worse, if this happened to her because of her choice of parties, I can't say that that kind of hatred is well placed. Just as you yourself said that you need the repubs to stay frosty and active when Obama gets into office, we really all do need each other to a great extent. this woman, unless, god forbid she really did do this to herself(and I don't have any facts to suggest this), is from my perspective, a believer.

It doesn't make her a bad guy to be in my opinion, wrong. It makes her misinformed, maybe, and I'm not going to hold 50 percent of our populace up as equally blamable for what has occured in this country. Granted, the problem is systemic, and we all are to blame, especially those of us who are misinformed, or are the misinformers...but there has been no collective call to get informed until recently(which is the one good thing about the financial crisis).

There has been no top down reminder of social and political responsibility of the citizen in this nation, there has been a breakdown in education, and a breakdown in values about just what the American Citizen is responsible for. All we were told was to let daddy take care of it while we go shopping.

It's hard to specifically blame each and every person for being ignorant in this country, when that seems to be an American Value after all.

Damn cretins SHOT at us, buncha religious ultra-crispy nutters took issue to a certain pagan gathering down there, started takin potshots at em - to which, one young ruthless bastard was sent in response, and after realizing truck radiators are damned expensive, the locals decided that maybe it wasn't worth botherin them no more... that was before I developed the depth perception issues which now make anythin more than a hundred yards a waste of ammo, though.

Te more I read about it, the less convinving her story is. The police are now saying her story has changed, and is inconsistant. they have given her a lie-detector test, but I havn't seen the results.

But it just seems a little too convenient that this happened hours after McCain's campaign says, in PA, that violence will break out amongst Obama supporters if they loose. And then there's the black eye with no swelling of burst blood vessels in the eye. Setting aside the "B" being backwards (which seems like something one would do if looking in a mirror), it seems awfully neat to have been downe while holding down a struggling woman. And why wouldn't she seek medical attention, unless she didn't want the true nature of her injury exposed?

Sigy,

Racism CAN (as in maybe, might, could be) have a political side to it.

But, there are a lot of Republicans out there who are NOT racist. Just as there are a lot of democrats who ARE.

And they throw in some sexual assault almost as an after thought, "She also indicated she was sexually assaulted as well." Was that before or after she lost consciousness? This guy sure took his time and most atms aren't exactly hidden, this one's on a busy street.

More inconsistancies: Aside from the cameras at the ATM not recording the incident, they didn't show her go to the machine at all, nor was her card used.

Also, she live-blogged about her search for an ATM in a rough neighborhood (how hard is it to find an ATM in a city these days? She needed to go to the inner city for it?) on Twitter. She had never blogged about such innocuous activities before (her blog being mostly stuff from McCai/Palin rallies).

Oh yes, I'm attacked by large scary black men every week, doncha know. They often carve backwards letters into my face (illiterate, I imagine) and beat on me and fondle me just because they can. I never get medical exams or treatment, though. Michelle Malkin smells a lot of if as well.....

Why that McCain volunteer’s “mutilation” story smells awfully weird; Update: Police to administer polygraph; conflicting evidence at scene
By Michelle Malkin • October 23, 2008 06:43 PM Scroll down for updates…”Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said”…and more below on following her MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook trails…10/24…more fishiness

Throughout my career, I’ve covered dozens of fake hate crimes — campus hate crime hoaxes, Muslim hate crime hoaxes, fake noose hangings, etc., etc., etc. Most were perpetrated by liberals, but there have been some shameful ones on our side of the aisle as well.

I’ve reported on the great lengths that warped attention-seekers have gone to in perpetrating fake hate crimes, including beating themselves up, carving swastikas on their dorm room doors and walls, locking themselves in bathroom stalls, and burning down their own houses.

Which is why I’m not jumping up and down with outrage over Drudge-promoted story of a McCain volunteer claiming to have been attacked by a black man whom she accused of carving a “B” in her face after spotting her McCain bumper sticker.

She refused medical treatment after reporting the incident to police. Why on earth would she do that?

Look at her face (photo via Hot Air):

What’s wrong with the “B?”

I share my reader Kathy’s suspicions on this. She writes:

Notice how the “B” is backwards on the right cheek……if you were looking in a mirror and put it on your own face…it would appear backwards and would probably be on your own right cheek (due to most folks are right handed)……she put it on her own face but forgot it would show up backwards.

She may have been robbed and beaten but I think she added the “B”….

Take a close look at the picture.
Maaaaybe the alleged robber straddled her upside-down while carving it into her face.

Maybe.

But I’ve got my doubts.

(Update: And yes, as many readers have pointed out, it’s also the neatness and superficiality of that “B” that also raises red flags. See my police officer reader’s e-mail below.)

The woman has been identified as GOP volunteer Ashley Todd of Texas. Her Twitter page is here and I find it, well, odd.

This seems to me to have shades of Paul Mirecki (note that there was a photo in that case, too), Sarah Marshak, and Tawana Brawley all over it.

If I’m wrong, I’ll apologize. If I’m right, will this woman?

It needs to be said — and since it is not said often enough by those on the other side of the political aisle, I’ll say it again:

We have enough low-lifes and thugs in the world running loose and causing campaign chaos and fomenting hatred without having to make them up. I’ve been blowing the whistle on the real, left-wing rage not on the front page and in-your-face tactics throughout the election season.

Hate crimes hoaxes — by anyone, of any political persuasion, and of any color — diminish us all.

Either way, I hope that Todd gets the help she needs, that the whole truth comes out, and that justice is served on the perpetrator.

Whoever he or she may be.

***

Ace weighs in.

And from a reader who is a police officer:

“I’m a cop - 8th year now - and this McCain supporter attack just didn’t pass the “smell test” as soon as I read about it.

At this point, I’ll guess the shiner was inflicted either by a friend willingly as part of this hoax or a boyfriend in a domestic dispute.

The “B” is far to[o] shallow and clean to be taken seriously. Reminds me of the stab wounds that a “hero” would get when fighting off a phantom attacker - far to[o] superficial to have been done in what is a fairly violent encounter.

Either way, I’m voting McCain
***

Update 1am Eastern: Via Pittsburgh Tribune-Review…

A knife-wielding man robbed a McCain-Palin campaign volunteer and etched a “B” into her face after he saw a McCain bumper sticker on her car, the woman told Pittsburgh police.

Police planned to administer a polygraph test to Ashley Todd, 20, because her statements about the attack conflict with evidence from the Citizens Bank ATM where she claims the incident occurred, police said.
FYI: Todd’s MySpace page has been turned private, but cached links are here.

Her Facebook profile has been deleted, but the cached front page is here.

Update 9:30am Eastern 10/24: She told police the assailant sat on her chest and pinned her hands down with his knees.

So much for all those thinking the attacker was upside-down with her head between his knees.

Apparently she has confessed to making it up.

http://kdka.com/local/attack.McCain.Bloomfield.2.847628.html

She should be charged with a hate crime.

I expect that wulfenstar will come on here as soon as he hears to make a full retraction of his slander by false association of all Obama supporters...and use that tried and true talent to now paint all Mccain supporters with the broad brush of lying drama queens.

any time now...

Note that he's appologizing for believing her, not for his broader implications about Obama supporters.

where he put the focus was different, somewhat oblique,

but in a way, its the same thing. He believed her mostly because he has a certain prejudice against the democratic party and Obama supporters. He's apologizing for making that leap of logic based upon unverified, unsound tropes...

or am i reading too much in here?

Wulfie, THIS is what you need to apologize for. Not b/c you believed a repubican lying sack of shit (or maybe that's redundant) but b/c you smeared every person who supports Obama.

***************************************************************

PS I just thought I'd give you a little taste of the politically-based hatred that you so unthinkingly dish out.

Well,

Thats just a relief....lol

And this woman....ok, wtf?

Why did she do this? What was her motivation?

And before we all go pointing fingers.... don't pretend like all of Bama's supporters are sweet, innocent lambs.

Oh, and btw, just so you know....

I hate both parties equally.
