KIRKULES

"My boyhood, and the Arab political culture I have been chronicling for well over three decades, are anchored in the Arab world. And the tragedy of Arab political culture has been the unending expectation of the crowd -- the street, we call it -- in the redeemer who will put an end to the decline, who will restore faded splendor and greatness. When I came into my own, in the late 1950s and '60s, those hopes were invested in the Egyptian Gamal Abdul Nasser. He faltered, and broke the hearts of generations of Arabs. But the faith in the Awaited One lives on, and it would forever circle the Arab world looking for the next redeemer.

America is a different land, for me exceptional in all the ways that matter. In recent days, those vast Obama crowds, though, have recalled for me the politics of charisma that wrecked Arab and Muslim societies. A leader does not have to say much, or be much. The crowd is left to its most powerful possession -- its imagination.

From Elias Canetti again: "But the crowd, as such, disintegrates. It has a presentiment of this and fears it. . . . Only the growth of the crowd prevents those who belong to it from creeping back under their private burdens."

The morning after the election, the disappointment will begin to settle upon the Obama crowd. Defeat -- by now unthinkable to the devotees -- will bring heartbreak. Victory will steadily deliver the sobering verdict that our troubles won't be solved by a leader's magic."

The "hero myth" is just a sham to keep folk pacified.

Don't sit around waiting for a hero, *become* one, and if you can't manage that, then become a villan, curse it!

And since you can't order "cathartic rebellion" off the menu and have it delivered in 30 minutes or less...most Americans won't turn off the Bonanza reruns long enough to involve themselves in the "tar heating up" and "feather gathering". Then they just settle back into alpha wave heavan.

I'm not falling for all of Obama's schtick, so I'm no zombie...but we need to get out of the war yesterday. Pubbys think it's doing people good, and they're hooked on it like heroin addicts. We gotta detox them, then move forward.

That my friend...is insightful commentary.

I can only hope for the heartbreak option...heartbreak so profound that they lose their newfound enthusiam and never seek to challenge the Republican party again...but I'll settle for the long term disappointment of an Obama Presidency (and the inevitable return to power it would bring to my beloved Republicans).

So election day will be good for Republicans no matter how it turns out. You've made me feel so much better.

Goldwater and Eisenhower Republicans.

Just remove everything Reagan and 911 did to the Republican party and I'm cool too.

Which in case if anyone is wondering...is:

1. paranoid bloodthirsty militarism
2. taking credit for the USSR collapse
3. taking credit for a post recession bubble
4. the Moral Minority

Other than that modern Pubbys are great!

1. Denial and isolation.
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

I'm having trouble trying to figure out where you are in the stages of grieving. I guess Kirk's post brought you out of depression. But your post had elements of bargaining and acceptance. So you're almost home free!

Anyway!...the economy probably won't be healed during the next 4-8 years, the Bush administration saw to that. I'm glad there aren't any Republicans wishing ills on the American economy for political gain. We're so lucky Americans will be united in our desire for a successful post election economy in America. Wishing otherwise would be so selfish.

But many Americans aren't smart enough to figure out Bush sabotaged the next Presidency unintentionaly...and, they won't remember that in four years. But untill then it's so nice to know that Pubbys don't act like middle school kids and have our economic health as thier first concern for the next 4 years.

Maybe there are Obama zombies around. I don't know any personally, nor have I seen any on this board. Just b/c a person supports Obama for reasons all their own doesn't make them a 'zombie'.

Kirkules, why do you continually misrepresent people who support Obama ? This isn't the first time you've made this exact generic slander.

What you don't seem to grasp, Kirkrules, is not all Obama supporters - or even most, I'd wager - think he's just going to step in and make it all right overnight. Personally, I'm betting that he's gonna screw up something pretty big within a year.

But it'll still be a step in, if not the right direction, then at least in a better direction that we have been going, or would go under more Republican control.

Yeah, the Bush/McPain zombies have done such a bang-up fucking job of making us "secure". Let's see... first, they got 3000 Americans killed by terrorists on 9/11, and then did nothing about it (they had Bin Laden cornered at Tora Bora, and simply let him walk away). Then, they got more than 4000 MORE Americans killed by terrorists in Iraq (hey, you're the ones calling insurgents "terrorists", not me - so by your own reckoning, you've gotten more Americans killed in Iraq than were killed on 9/11)...

And McPalin wants to continue in this vein, wanting to stay in Iraq for 100 years, wanting to bomb-bomb-bomb Iran, jumping for joy when we attack into Syria.

Why do the McCain zombies love terrorists so? Why are they so eager to have Americans killed by terrorists?

"Imagination" is about all most people HAVE to bank on these days; your idiot Bush and his Republican cronies have pissed away all our REAL money!

Obama has "arrogant pride" and "conceit" - meanwhile, McCain swear "we've got them just where we want them", which sounds pretty prideful and arrogant to me. And then you've got Bush, who can't recall a single mistake he's made, and nothing he wishes he'd done better than he did. But at least he's not conceited or arrogant about it, right?

But thanks for the vote of confidence in Obama - he really should do great "win" he steps in. I'm glad you've accepted his victory and are standing so proudly (and arrogantly, I'll bet) behind him.

Yeah, don't hold your breath on the demoralization tack. Or even the overconfidence. I voted for Obama a week ago. Just about everyone I know - even the pot smokers and video game players - have as well. In my state, the estimate is that 2/3s of registered voters have already done so.

Seems to me if anyone is going to be demoralized and stay home, it'll be the old coots who would've voted for McCain if it hadn't been time for their nap.

Here in Austin they're saying that more people have voted early than voted at all in 2004 - and they're HOPING that half the registered voters will vote early. Which means they still expect an awful lot of votes on election day.

A huge number of those votes are going to Obama, despite the Democrats in Texas being "demoralized" by the fact that Texas is a foregone Republican state. But some polls show Obama within the margin of error, making Texas a possible battleground state.

Either way, it looks like this election might do wonders for voter involvement and turnout in this country. That's kind of the IDEA of an election, right? Get people to show up and vote?

The IDEA is to get more votes than the other guy, and if you can't get the votes for your side it means you have to deprive millions of voters on the other side of their vote. At least, that's the idea of democracy if you're a repubican.

Careful with that demoralisation tactic, overplayed, it tends to turn into an angry horde with pitchforks and torches.

You need to learn subtlety Kirk, if you wanna sap folks political will, they really need to never know you're doing it, be coming to YOU for comfort, sympathy and platitudes...
(and a tiny dose of poison they think is medicine )

As for the rest......

I sincerely hope he still has that box of Obama Waffles we gave him, and has it for his first breakfast in the oval office.

Be even cooler if he left the box on the desk for his first televised address too, heh heh.

But, required snark having been delivered - let's NOT take our thumb off this guy, ok ?

Yup, and if he asked you to blow him, you probably would. Good job man.

Me? Not so much. You and Palin would probably have fun tag-teaming him, though.

Confessions of a Political Junkie:

I'm getting all jazzed up about Election Day. I've worked overtime to get ahead at work, I'm working this weekend to get FURTHER ahead, and I've already scheduled off next Wednesday - my first day off in about 8 months. I'll be staying up all night watching the returns, channel surfing from one outlet to the other looking for the early call on the election.

And needless to say, I've already got the champagne chilling. I figure one way or another, I'll need it; I'll either be celebrating late into the night, or drowning my sorrows into the morning... It's going to be an interesting night!

Mike

RUE

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

I'll be at work, with the sparkling cider.

Some people here (not me) have been optimistic for weeks. So, I got prepared to celebrate.
