Quote:

Christopher Bizilj died Sunday when he lost control of a 9 millimeter Micro Uzi he was trying out at a gun show at the Westfield Sportsman's Club in Massachusetts.

The boy's father, Charles Bizilj of Ashford, Conn., said Thursday night at Springfield's Sacred Heart Church that his son "lived a lifetime in his short eight years." The father said he and the boy's mother "have no regrets."

Ahh that so nice that they have no regrets.
This guy is a physician at a hospital, worked in the ER, went to an actual school & everything, and still he's gorram STUPID enough to hand a military assault weapon (fully automatic, mind you) to a kid that just got done using his booster seat.

This dad should be brought up on charges, as well as the gun club that sponsored it, IMO.

And in true NeoCon form, he doesn't see his role in his boy's death, as AUDobson said in another thread, "Accidents happen."
Iraq Wars happen too.

What's with these peeps? Nothing is their fault. This man was pushed by our violent society to teach his young boy about Israeli sub machine guns, I guess. Just not the best o' luck that the 8 year old couldn't control the kickback, eh?

Does this incident freak anyone else out as much as it does me?
Is our sanctification of violence in this country out of control now?
Is life so expendable that we can just write this kind of thing off as an 'accident'???

I would have no regrets if he went to prison and I definately think that he and the Mrs should not be allowed to breed further.

No regrets? Oh man, this DOES sound like a serious case of denial. I cannot imagine a parent honestly feeling this way.

Was he in shock or some such, when he said this?

Either way, this goes so way beyond sanity, I wouldn't ascribe this behavior to any political leanings. Just to plain... craziness. Not to mention all that paunful irresponsibility. Denial sounds about right, maybe his brain refuses to process what he did to his own child?

This is so awful.

But is it a wonder that rightwing-nuts are the ones putting guns in kid's hands? You will NEVER see a Liberal, or a thinking Conservative giving an Uzi to an 8 year old...this isn't the first kid to fire automatic weapons, remember, he's just the first to cap himself because he was out of physical contact with anyone to help him should he need it.
And this dad gave an interview the next day lookin' all calm & such, I wouldn't be able to even talk coherently for DAYS, maybe WEEKS if that happened to MY son...

These peeps just don't care...that's what it seems like to me, just like NeoCons can claim collateral damage & acceptable losses when thousands die for the 'cause'.

You liberals are the fucking idiots. You assume to know that this family is unfeeling about the death of their child because they don't subscribe to your anti-gun views. I for one don't want to live in your antiseptically "safe" world were every conceivable thing that can hurt you is banned for our own good. There's 6+ billion people on this earth and you choose to obsess on one tragic death because it fits you preconception of what's wrong with the world. Accidents happen and many of them are preventable, but I don't remember any of you posting an article about the hundreds of kids killed and hurt each year because irresponsible parents don't put their kids in car seats. That's right, as far as you're concerned cracked out parents that leave their kids to fend for themselves are victims of society but a parent who tries to teach his kid to safely fire a gun is an evil monster. If the child had been yanked out of the womb at eight months and flushed down the toilet by an unloving crack whore you'd be defending her right to do so to the end.

Third, how is wanting kids whose balls haven't even dropped yet not to be exposed to loaded military weapons for fun fit your definition of 'every conceivable thing that can hurt you'? Oh, I forgot, ...DUMASS!

That's a different level of child endangerment, one that I would be in favour of prosecuting should you care to point out an incident.

Thanks for not resorting to demonizing those whose viewpoints you oppose while you try to point out the ludicrousness of them demonizing those whose viewpoints they oppose...

Tell me, where did you see this story reported? The one about the unloving crack whore ripping her eight-month-old out of the womb and flushing it down the toilet? I hadn't seen that news story, much less anyone on any side defending her right to do so.

On the other hand, the 8-year-old kid with the Uzi IS actually a factual story, in that it actually happened.

For the record, I'm both a gun enthusiast AND a social liberal, and I have a problem with an 8-year-old kid being handed a full-auto Uzi machine pistol. I don't have a problem with teaching kids about guns, gun safety, and how to safely handle and shoot firearms, but they need to work their way up. Start 'em on BB guns, work into a .22 rifle, etc.

Damn sad indeed - but remember, Chris...

In our society children are non-human, non-persons, with less rights and status than livestock, something I have pointed out, and railed about, time and time again, without ever seeming to get it across.

With that in mind, the way they're acting, see...

It's not like a human died, or a person was killed, just some piece of property rated little higher than a housepet, oh well, things happen and all that.

And I do, and always have, taken that whole attitude as so profoundly offensive that I've invested a great deal of my own life to changing it, because once you relegate SOME humans to the non-person category, it just gets easier and easier to broaden it, see ?

People of another color, people of another belief, people who believe different things politically... just add them to the non-person category, since it's already there in the first place with an open door, and even you, strong as your own humanity is, have started to file the NeoCons there, haven't you ?

See how EASY that is, how slippery that slope becomes once the slope is in place to begin with ?

People do not by nature use violence against other people - first they must dehumanise them, reduce them mentally to non-person status, often even down to non-human, that's how racism works, how sexism works, and all the rest of the whole litany of hate, intolerance and meanness.

And sick as our society is, we start with our kids, mostly because they're born with their humanity intact and see our society for the vile thing it really is until we crush that out of them, something we couldn't do, would be UNABLE to do, if we regarded them as people.

So, no, this doesn't surprise me a damn bit, nor does the fact he probably will not face charges or that he's displaying the socially-approved attitude about it.

Really, it's not like a PERSON was killed, you know....

Crack whores and Alaskan Mothers running for office aside, this is a tragedy that none but parents could understand.

I could not imagine losing my son because I put him in harm's way...no matter what the instrument. Accidents do happen...some just waiting to happen.

Who knew that an 8 year-old child couldn't shoot an Uzi in the proper manner. His parents trained him properly and excercised their God-given right to shoot and blow things up real good.

But the bigger question is what right does anyone, other than his parents, have to judge his right to live a ripe full life. And that ripe full life should include the right to shoot a gun whenever and wherever he so chooses. After all he is an American.

No one should have that right to question one's choice to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, which in this case is a warm Uzi.
Absolutely no one.

I suspect the father is talking like he does in a - probably vain - attempt to avoid a whole shit-load of guilt coming down inside his head. He'll have to live with this the rest of his life, and probably with some sort of justly applied legal reprecussions.

Imagine how many times a year folks die because someone can't wait to get off the road to text their buddy about some meaningless crap. Are they all neo-cons too?

Interesting side note, at an average 4 3/4 pounds, and over 17 inches in length, an eight month old fetus would certainly not make it down a toilet with a drainage aperture of less than 3 inches, sort of seating your hypothetical in the 'dumass' section, no?

I'm wondering just what kind of legal case anyone is going to have regarding this incident. There was a certified range safety officer present, as required, there was parental consent, as required, and I've no doubt that everyone handling the weapons had to sign a waiver in advance, as is standard practice to guard the range and its people against liability.

What probably WILL happen will be that a minimum age will be demanded at such events in the future, but that doesn't become retroactive to before this event happened. Or such events will be banned outright. As with most tragedies, the laws get changed BECAUSE there was an accident, not BEFORE there was one.

But I agree, Geezer - that kid's father, whether he shows it on TV or not, is in fact in hell right now. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he shoots himself within the year.

Mike

PS: Try not to hate the kid's father too much; he's already got enough bad shit in his life right now, and there's nothing we can do to him that's worse than he's doing to himself.

I know you do understand the principle of it, Chris...

But that gentle slap in there for you, you should not ignore either - look within and tell me you haven't started to file folk you disagree with in a nonperson category, and with me sitting here watching it happen to you.

That's how it starts, you see.

And it's a bad, bad road to travel, cause once you have filed them as "other", you then begin to fear them, hate them, and not for their actions anymore, just that they are "other" - the same road THEY travelled down, once upon a time, until fear, misery and violence consumed them utterly.

Were we face to face, that slap would not have been metaphoric, nor so gentle.

Beware the darkside, Son.

Sounds like a gun club firing range, where you pay to rent a gun from the owner of the store.

Mother, Son Killed While Trick-Or-Treating

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- A mother and her 9-year-old son were struck and killed while trick-or-treating on Halloween, Westfield police said.

Both were wearing dark clothing and walking on a street with dark sidewalks when they were struck by a Toyota, Westfield Sergeant Brian Boldini said.

Roberta A. Salois, 47, was taken to Noble hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her 9-year-old son, Steven X. Smith-Salois, was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he died.

The driver of the Toyota, Anne R. Schlichtig, 26, of Westfield, was questioned by police.

She was driving on South Maple Street just after 8 p.m., when her car struck the mother and child.

Police said they will determine if charges will be filed.

It was billed as a "gun fair". Here in Central Texas, we call them "Machine Gun Shoots".

Small point of fact, though - bullets are indeed allowed at gun shows in these parts. That's usually where I buy my ammo, at the local "fun show". :)

I do know that, as a responsible adult, an 8 year-old cannot, and should not, be handling a weapon of any kind. Period.

Of course, having said that, there are those who believe that no one should question their choices as parents. But clearly, this man felt that he was within his rights to teach his son to shoot guns. It could be argued that he made a poor choice in allowing him to squeeze off a few.

I was trying to make a point about individual rights, common and moral sense, and the law of the land. Should he be charged with criminally negligent homicide? I don't know, and it all depends on the law that's on the books for that particular state. Some might say that he has "suffered" enough with the loss of his son. One thing was clear from the article, he chose to "teach" his son to shoot guns.

Shiny! Let's be bad guys!

Father was dumb, his son paid for it. Period. End of story.

What more is there to talk about?

I learned to shoot .22s when I was his age, like any kid is suppossed to. Not a freakin fully loaded UZI....jeeze.

I mean, when I was teaching my wife to shoot, it was one in the chamber until she got used to the kick.

But whatever, anti-gun folks will use this...while forgetting that private guns protect more lives than take them.

Not to mention protecting our freedoms.

I'm pro responsible gun ownership. But it has to be regulated, like driving an automobile. Demonstrate that you can't do it safely, and restrictions may apply.

Chris,

In this we agree. Its the amount of regulation that we would probably disagree.

A gun, like a Swiss Army knife, is a tool. Most should be allowed to carry one with them wherever they go.

For that all important phrase...

"Just in case."

A Swiss Army knife is a weapon, & a burglar tool under many present laws. Plus: if someone bigger than you attacks you, & you use it to defend yourself while he has no weapon other than his tremendous size- that's attempted murder.

Howz that for back-asswards?

"I know you do understand the principle of it, Chris...

Beware the darkside, Son."

Frem,

Good insight.

But remember, there ARE others. The evil, the low, the stupid.

Human by name/designation only.

These are the ones that need to be culled from the planet/population.

But...I guess, the light needs the dark to differentiate itself. And to make the light all the more precious and bright.

No, there are human that have lost their way, in a few, extreme cases, so badly that they need to be freed from their twisted, mortal shells.

NeoCons, Liberals...this is a higher point than political party affiliation.

And I believe both "sides" would agree.

You know, Wulf, it's comments like that which lead me to call you on racism, however unconsciously you do it - besides which, remember the wisdom of the grey pilgrim.

"Deserves it! I dare say he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death and judgment. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Frem,

As an example of the evil I speak of...

The guy is Austrian, whitest of the white, aryan of the most aryan...and I dare you to say that this monster should be allowed to keep living.

When I speak of the low, or the evil, or the stupid, I don't mean one particular race or group.

If there is one thing that's good about growing up in the shadow of Germany's past, it's not falling into the "They aren't human" trap.

PEOPLE do this shit. They are human. They are.

No, there is no excuse, and while I do not condone killing, it's up to the Austrian legal system and/or the victim to condemn them to whatever is available, BUT this is a human being and will always be.

We don't get to pretend that they are "other" in such a way as to remove them from what we are and what befits us.

That is he exact path that monsters are made of because once you define human and subhuman, it only becomes a question of where you choose to draw the line. And a line can be oh so easily shifted up and down.

It didn't look so when you specifically stated "Obama supporters" - something which will boomerang on you a while yet, till you prove past it, obviously.

As for the shithead in mention of your post...

You put him in a cage and study his ass to find out what makes him tick and how he got that way.

Killin is too good for em, and doesn't solve the problem.

Besides, I see worse every day, do you really think that this creep and Marc Dutroux are the totality of that kind of evil ?

Pray to your divinity of choice that's the worst you'll ever see, is all I got to say to that.

I know you don't MEAN to come across as racist, but you do give that appearance whether you mean to or not, your ire and outrage tends to channel you down mental paths that do in the end bend in that direction - and rather than fuss so much when I point it out to you, I reccommend you step back a little and look at it objectively.

One of the methods I use for maintaining verbal eloquence, even when being bitterly vulgar or profane to get a point across, is to compose a post in notepad first, and just leave it for a little while, then come back, proofread and edit for clarity - no reason to hipshoot an argument if you don't have to, and it puts a certain useful distance between thought and action.

Ponder well that I am spending the effort to advise, rather than flame you, and take it for the complement it is.
