This infuriates me beyond words. There's no excuse, none what so ever, for this sort of bullshit. This bitch teacher needs to be fired, WITH OUT ANY TEACHERS UNEMPLOYMENT PAY , immediately.

Quote:

This is ghastly. If you are a parent with elementary schoolchildren, you will hit the roof. A teacher in Cumberland County, N.C. near Fort Bragg was caught on tape by Finnish documentarians making a film about Barack Obama’s supporters. The teacher, Diantha Harris, uses the classroom as a propaganda vehicle to shove her politics down the children’s throats.

Watch her bully a little girl who dares to answer “McCain” when asked whom she supports for president. The child is the daughter of a soldier. Watch the teacher mock the girl and her father (”So that mean yo’ daddy could stay in Iraq for another hundred years!”). Watch the little girl’s eyes well up in tears. Is this the kind of education reform Barack Obama advocates?

I'm gonna stun you here & say that teacher needs severe disciplining. I'd suspend her for a month without pay & make her take psych classes, as well as require an apology IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE CLASS for that- it was brutally insensitive. God forbid he father should die in Iraq, that little stunt could set that child up for major psychological problems involving self-blame.
And ONE WORD of defense of her actions during the process, and I'd fire her ass.

Stupid biped.

So Rapo, what do you think of this? Is it inexcusable? Does it infuriate you beyond words?

Board refuses to fire Florida teacher over Obama slur
October 17, 2008
Quote:

MARIANNA, Fla. - A school board has refused to fire a teacher over a racial slur aimed at Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. The Jackson County panel, instead, voted 3-2 Thursday to suspend Greg Howard without pay for 10 days, costing him about $2,500. He also was removed from coaching duties with the loss of related pay and ordered to take diversity training and write an apology to students.

Nearly 200 people attended the meeting with most demanding that the board fire Howard. Some parents say they'll ask the state to revoke his teaching certificate. During a seventh-grade class Howard reportedly wrote "CHANGE" on the blackboard as an acronym for "Come Help A (slur) Get elected."

I'll agree with you Aurap,

almost entirely.

I don't so much mind a teacher talking about his or her politics if he is mindful of his audience...and is wise not to preech his politics as truth.

I'm not as ready to hate the woman as you are , she's idealogically wrapped up, wound up with the election, and she's clearly not fit to teach if she's forgetful of just how significant her words can be to a child,

but I didn't see from this video that she was a BAD person. Harmful? Most definitely.

I'm sure you'll be popping on to agree that the guy in Sygm's post should be fired as well, and that it just cheeses you off to no end, and that you're frothing at the mouth over it.

You see Rapo? I can troll the internet too. For every example YOU bring up, I can find another on the other side. Maybe even more.

So let's just agree that it's ugly whoever does it. That teachers with anti-war bumper stickers should be able to park in the school parking lot, as well as teachers with "God Bless America".

Personally, what I think kids should be learning is to LOOK, THINK, AND ASK QUESTIONS. Our mindless bumper-sticker-don't-ask-questions-shut-up-and-learn mentality has ruined generations.

IF he did it , I'd have his ass fired. The problem here is, we have no record of this actually happening. It's " alleged ". While the two cases appear to be similar , the evidence against each teacher is not, and that's possibly the major factor in one getting more punishment than the other ( though I doubt the NC teacher will be fired )

I'm glad the FL teacher got at least suspended and will lose his coaching pay. If nothing else grabs his attention, not having as much beer $$ will wake his arse up.

For every qualified teacher, it seems we have 3-4 that are utterly worthless. Exaggeration or not, we have far too many worthless teachers , wasting our kids time and getting paid by our tax $$ to do it. If they're not fondling or sending dirty text messages to the children, they're bullying them and making fun of what the kids parents teach them.

What Chris said. I can't reach his level of eloquence on the matter, except to say that I had a verbally-abusive teacher in 4th grade - not saying I was permanently scarred by her comments (and I don't recall her ever engaging in that kind of overt indoctrination), but it didn't make me real eager to get out of bed and head for school. But I can see ol' Miss "Nutjob" Smith pulling this exact kind of stunt. There's enough wrong with our educational system without loose canons - or cannons, for that matter - like her wandering around loose.

It was - and still is - like that when we got here!

You clearly don't have children in school. My daughter's teachers for the most part have been passionate about teaching, caring of their students, and concerned for DD's welfare. But since she attended an innner-city school for a while, I can tell you from experience that the teachers were overburdened with HUGE class sizes (45 2nd graders!), the crying needs of their students, and the (too many) children who didn't speak English.

Dude Search your feelings. You KNOW it to be true ! We have great teachers, but far too many others have no business even being in the schools, unless it's to retake their G.E.D.s And this isn't just about politics, it could have been a host of other issues. This 'teacher' used the power of her position as teacher and an adult figure as head of the class to intimidate and indoctrinate children who didn't agree with her. And then she went on and friggen LIED about !

I think MAYBE you and I come from the same general neighborhood on this, 'Rap. I have never been real comfortable around kids - not as an adult, and not really back when I was one myself. Like Chris Rock once said, they can be the meanest, nastiest creatures on earth sometimes (and I, in my own way, was no exception), and they are often more clever - and a hell of a lot more cheerful - than I am. But as a concept, if you will, I think kids are about the neatest damn things on the planet. Up through a certain age, a child's event horizon is damn near limitless, and the world and everything in it is - at least theoretically - the kid's oyster. And then all the external influences - good, bad, and in between - come to bear, and...well, I do think it's amazing sometimes that more kids' oysters don't turn out to be Charles Manson-flavored, if you see what I mean...and I understand if you don't - it's tough to type concise posts at work and appear productive at the same time.

It was like that when we got here!

How is this possiby a contest w/ you ? Why are you makiing it something ELSE to fight over. The only thing you've got is if you side w/ this lady, and it seems like you don't. So, what the hell is with the attitude ?

I heard it on talk radio. Big fucking deal. It wasn't Rush, but two different shows were talking about it. And after I heard about it, I DID surf the net , to find out more than what I had heard. So, my 'information pipeline' is indeed very fair and very balanced. So wtf does that have to do w/ the story? Nothing. Seems you're just looking for any small reason to fuss over, even if there's nothing to fuss about in the first place.

You simply can't stand that I'm posting something here that you can't disagree with me on or can't take the other side. It really cooks your noodle that you can't fight me on this.

This isn't cherry picked. The story reads as is. If you can't find anything wrong w/ this story, AS IS, then there's more wrong w/ you than I care to say. What I find so incredible is how you want to blindly ignore how this " teacher " so casually and intentionally bullies a little girl over the politics of the girl's PARENTS to the point the girl is on the verge of tears. And then the teacher lies and says she NEVER corners the children over views, and yet all YOU see is this as being some sort of FOX story, or that it's 'cherry picked', you so totally miss the point.

And yes, I'm even stunned at your cold heart over this matter.

The educational system is generally liberal and anti-war, that's just a reality.

EDUCATION is generally liberal and anti-war.

Warfare is a damn stupid way to solve anything and it usually... doesn't.

You kill them, all their orphans get pissed off, kill you, then your orphans get pissed and kill theirs and it goes on and on, that's part and parcel of why the middle east is so fucked up right now, endless grudge matches that no one can seem to let go of and a cycle that ever feeds itself.

War is fucking stupid, any way you slice it, and thus any sort of education is GOING to be anti-war, it's just that simple.

As well, part of a good education is to question, to be skeptical, to understand rather than accept, which are "liberal" values that in spite of being mocked, make us all better people and more human than we'd be without them - for the opposite is doctrine, blind obediance and loyalty that leads to brownshirted hordes, bloodshed and war.

So yes, in essence, education ITSELF is both Liberal and Anti-War, and that's a *good* thing to anyone with half a lick of sense.

But elementary school teachers should as a rule keep their political leanings to themself - high school and above, should offer them only if asked, and even then explicitly framed as personal opinion only, that's part and parcel of doing a good job.

Remember yer talkin to someone who took a lotta shit as an eight year old kid for refusing to stand and recite the pledge cause he thought it was a shovel load of hypocritical bullshit even before he could spell or properly verbalise the concept.

We don't, in my opinion, even HAVE an education system any more, we have a socio-political indoctrination system set up to force us into neat little categories and stunt us emotionally so we'll be good little corporate climbers and consumers.

And heaven help you if you happen to be a square peg, cause what happens to them is every bit as vile as any other wholesale destruction of a whole people in history, and we're even worse cause we do it to mere children.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

When I went to school, the Pilgrims came to America in a sprit of friendship and collaboration with the native Americans, and they worked together as allies.

Later, I learned that the first contact between the Pilgrims and the native Americans was when the Pilgrims stole native American food and desecrated the burial sites of their dead. This had been omitted from my 'official' history texts.

When I went to school, Christopher Columbus discovered America.

Later, I learned that he was preceded by multiple other explorers, not the least of which were the human beings already living here. This had been omitted from my 'official' history texts.

When I went to school, I learned that Hitler committed the gravest acts of genocide in recorded history.

Later, I learned that he was preceded by worse men, and that he had a living contemporary mass murderer in the body of Stalin. This had been omitted from my 'official' history texts.

I find it abominable that individuals inflict their personal politics and prejudices upon a classroom of impressionable children.

I find it equally abominable that a nation inflicts its propaganda and prejudices upon a classroom of impressionable children.

I didn't get a hint of real education until late middle-school and High School. It was frustrating to unlearn the propaganda of my primary school years, and embrace the 'new truth' of my high school years. And then, yet again, in College.

Can't we just teach children all the facts from the get-go, rather than lying, then telling them half-truths, then telling them mostly-truths?

Anthony - I agree, in part. Much of what we were taught in elementary and HS was flat out rubbish. Columbus wasn't out to prove the world was round, and he never set foot on the N. American continent. That the Earth wasn't flat was a well known fact from a time before Christ. ( Knowledge suppressed by the Church, of course ) Many things, like the fact that matter is made up of smaller particles like atoms and life on Earth is very old, were conceived over 1000 yrs ago, only to be re-discovered, post Renaissance.

When it comes to the history of the Earth, mankind and even science, much of what I've learned has come AFTER HS and even college.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I think this teacher was wrong, and clearly not a good teacher. Good teachers have a gentle hand and firm lead, they can express things in a way that makes you think.
That being said, it's very likely she made a (bad) personal choice in the matter. She wasn't put up to it by this massive left-wing conspiracy touted in the thread title.
People of all outlooks jerk their knees. I work with a guy who was constantly snapping and snarking at anyone who supported Obama. It wasn't his place to do so, especially when it came to our customer base, and was a bad decision on his part. I didn't think he'd been contacted by secret right-wing operatives and told to be a bully, I just think he's a bully. Same with this situation. No one told her to be a bully, she just is one. That doesn't make it any less wrong, but it is kind of wrong to portray one incident as "Left wing indoctrination in US schools" involving some wide conspiracy of several teachers.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

When I went to school, the Pilgrims came to America in a sprit of friendship and collaboration with the native Americans, and they worked together as allies.

When I went to school, Christopher Columbus discovered America.

When I went to school, I learned that Hitler committed the gravest acts of genocide in recorded history.

Just be glad you didn't go to Catholic school!!! I can sing the Latin Mass if you want!

Wow...you can make all kinds of sense when you try. Jeeze, almost sounded scholarly there. You have a fine mind, until politics shorts it out.

If you were familiar w/ Occam's Razor, you'd soon come to realize that I'm as right on politics as I am on history.

PR - the teacher's unions are set up to promote the hiring and steady supply of teachers like her. Less educated, more opinionated and very hard to get rid of. I remember having a science teacher in HS. who was damn near nuts Everyone know it, even though we were 9th graders. But she was an intro level teacher, so most of her inane ramblings, I suspect the higher ups figured, wouldn't damage our education all that much. But it was comical , for us, at least. Now, looking back , it seems less funny.

This is something I've noticed with many intelligent educated right wingers, they have a reasonably objective view of past history, but cannot apply that objective thinking to today's reality.
Understandable, since it would necessitate separating one's self from the flood of illogic associated with heated present day political discourse.
Perhaps in one's next lifetime, one will be more objective about todays' political landscape...

Teacher Associations (Unions) have nothing to do with hiring for school districts. They do have control over who is fired. They provide equal protection for all their members regardless of the infraction.

It's fuzzy-minded liberal thinking like that that gets you eaten.

I am. Basically comes down to the simplest explanation being the most likely.
So tell me, is it more likely that a foolish woman made a bad call, or that a vast network of thousands of people working against the thought process of the right wing were the architects of a bullying teacher, and indeed many just like her? One is pretty simple, the other is vastly more complicated and involves a much larger number of... entities, I believe is the word commonly used in the principal of Ockham. So, by your own claimed logic, your argument kind of fails.

Oh, also, is it more likely that a teacher (like, say, MsA) knows more about the system than... well, a non teacher, like... you?

Just sayin.
