I saw Crow...in the theater...when it first came out...and I was still drinking heavily. So, consequently, my recollection of it - and the overall...quality...of the Crow character - is spotty at best. I would have to watch it again to decide how I feel about your allegation of cheap-knock-off-ery. My completely worthless hunch is that you're unfairly overblowing the similarities (as compared to the degree to - and manner in - which I would blow them), but as I say, for all I remember Ledger's Joker may be a total Crow carbon copy.

I think Ledger's Joker was having fun...for a rather specialized definition of "fun". I am not a Ledger fan-boy - I've seen maybe 2 of his movies that I know of, Dark Knight being one of them. And I do have quite a feeling of good will for Jack Nicholson - he has entertained me tremendously and reliably over the years. But like I sorta said, I felt like Nicholson's Joker was basically Jack putting on the suit and turning himself up to 11. I feel like Ledger had to dig around inside himself a little to come up with his portrayal. For me, that's a Joker who really does want to see the world burn.

Or maybe it's all to do with my identification with the want-to-watch-the-world-burn mentality. I don't see myself as one who would ever actually light the match, but I can sure understand the impulse.

Remember in the first (or was it the second? - see earlier remark about drinking) Star Trek movie when we got to see the Klingons done up in foam rubber and latex? Not the series' dimestore Klingons with the heavy coat of Man-Tan and paste-on 'stache-and-goatee combo, but folks who looked like they might actually come from another planet (or at least from a fatter effects budget)? I remember feeling after that like I had finally seen the "real" Klingons. After Dark Knight I kinda feel like I have seen the "real" Joker.

It was like that when we got here!

Actually, Ledgers portrayal was closer to the "truth" of the Joker.

Some say that the Joker is a the complete schizophrenic. (Which is really a way of explaining his different personas through the 40's, 50's, 60s, 70s, 80s, ect..)

Ledgers Joker was the epitome of the complete disconnect. Its what happens when you no longer care at all.

Everything is a joke, because nothing really matters. Its not really funny, unless you just don't care anymore.

Btw, the Dark Knight ran on for at least a half hour too long. They wanted to give it a "happier" ending. That's why they had the b.s. with the 2 ferries.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

IMHO the best part of The Dark Knight was the Joker. "Why so serious?" was pitch-perfect. And then, to hear yet another equally heartfelt, compelling version of how he got those scars... Ledger's Joker felt like a real person. A deeply troubled person, but a person that I'd want to know more about (from a safe distance).

The rest of the movie? Yeah, at least a half-hour too long. JUST when I thought it ended... it cranked up again.

Yeah, but taken, albeit not word for word, from The Crow.
Check out Brandon Lee as he rubs his head on the light bulb to see where Ledger got most of his facial expression for his Joker.

No man, you know what a Crow rip-off is? The Crow 2 City of Angels. That's a rip-off.

The whole point is that there is a solid block of comic fans out there that would reject any Joker that wasn't presented in a "The Killing Joke" fashion. I like this re-invention.

Ras-Al-Ghul was different but since he was obscure to the larger public, nobody flipped out. The Scarecrow was also different in a fashon, with differing motives driving his sadism, but again, nobody flipped out. When they finally get around to the Joker, it's a Crow rip-off. I watched an interview with the director in late 2007 where he expressed hesitation at getting to the Joker so quickly as he knew that since the character was so iconic, ANY re-invention would be seen as a violation of SOMETHING.

Besides chris, you just accepted that Max G was a copy of Faith from BTvS. But I'll bet you don't love that character any less. I just re-watched Dark Angel season 1 again last week, and it does have it's moments, my opinion rises.
