It was like Nicholson in a funny suit playing Nicholson (and bless his heart for it) when we got here!

Huh?
At the end of Batman Begins when I saw that Joker card, a shiver ran up my spine.
Then in Dark Knight we get... a colourful yet psycho rehash of Brandon Lee's Crow??? WTF?
Sorry, I'm not on the Ledger worship wagon here.
His Joker looked like he was on downers. The Joker I know has FUN doing what he does & laughs a lot.
Plus they wasted Dent.

Give me Green Goblin, The Abomination, Hackman's Luthor from the first two Supermans...I don't mind deviation from the comics as much as cheap imitations from other movies.

We've been over this Chris, The Dark Knight is a re-invention. The Joker told us his philosophy from the jump at the end of the bank heist:

"I believe that whatever doesn't kill you, simply makes you stranger"

The intention was always to present a different flavor of psychopath, just as Ras-al-guhl was vastly different from his comic predecesor. You need to prepare yourself, you are about to see a vastly different Catwoman in 3 years.

I saw Crow...in the theater...when it first came out...and I was still drinking heavily. So, consequently, my recollection of it - and the overall...quality...of the Crow character - is spotty at best. I would have to watch it again to decide how I feel about your allegation of cheap-knock-off-ery. My completely worthless hunch is that you're unfairly overblowing the similarities (as compared to the degree to - and manner in - which I would blow them), but as I say, for all I remember Ledger's Joker may be a total Crow carbon copy.

I think Ledger's Joker was having fun...for a rather specialized definition of "fun". I am not a Ledger fan-boy - I've seen maybe 2 of his movies that I know of, Dark Knight being one of them. And I do have quite a feeling of good will for Jack Nicholson - he has entertained me tremendously and reliably over the years. But like I sorta said, I felt like Nicholson's Joker was basically Jack putting on the suit and turning himself up to 11. I feel like Ledger had to dig around inside himself a little to come up with his portrayal. For me, that's a Joker who really does want to see the world burn.

Or maybe it's all to do with my identification with the want-to-watch-the-world-burn mentality. I don't see myself as one who would ever actually light the match, but I can sure understand the impulse.

Remember in the first (or was it the second? - see earlier remark about drinking) Star Trek movie when we got to see the Klingons done up in foam rubber and latex? Not the series' dimestore Klingons with the heavy coat of Man-Tan and paste-on 'stache-and-goatee combo, but folks who looked like they might actually come from another planet (or at least from a fatter effects budget)? I remember feeling after that like I had finally seen the "real" Klingons. After Dark Knight I kinda feel like I have seen the "real" Joker.

It was like that when we got here!

Actually, Ledgers portrayal was closer to the "truth" of the Joker.

Some say that the Joker is a the complete schizophrenic. (Which is really a way of explaining his different personas through the 40's, 50's, 60s, 70s, 80s, ect..)

Ledgers Joker was the epitome of the complete disconnect. Its what happens when you no longer care at all.

Everything is a joke, because nothing really matters. Its not really funny, unless you just don't care anymore.

Btw, the Dark Knight ran on for at least a half hour too long. They wanted to give it a "happier" ending. That's why they had the b.s. with the 2 ferries.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

IMHO the best part of The Dark Knight was the Joker. "Why so serious?" was pitch-perfect. And then, to hear yet another equally heartfelt, compelling version of how he got those scars... Ledger's Joker felt like a real person. A deeply troubled person, but a person that I'd want to know more about (from a safe distance).

The rest of the movie? Yeah, at least a half-hour too long. JUST when I thought it ended... it cranked up again.

Right now we are treading into unknown waters.

Every step from this day forward will either carry us to a more free, steady, Constitutional world.

Yeah, but taken, albeit not word for word, from The Crow.
Check out Brandon Lee as he rubs his head on the light bulb to see where Ledger got most of his facial expression for his Joker.
Check out Brandon Lee laughing after the thug shoots him in the hand & you'll see where Ledger got his 'tude when killing the guy on tape.

I would have appreciated at least an original character, if not the one I expected.

Anyway, to the audacity of hope. And hopefully, a little less audacity :)

My stocks seem to like Obama. I like the guy. I worry about the Clintonistas, but I think there's a chance that Barack will make enough friends on the right that he won't need the Clinton crowd.

So we now have Obama as President.

I was actually moved by his speech.

That said, I will hold always to the tenets of our Constitution..

- I am a free man. Free to act and to protect myself as need be.

- I am a citizen, sworn by my very birth, to protect the freedoms of my fellow citizens.

- I am an AMERICAN, chosen by history to carry the torch of freedom and INDIVIDUALITY to my fellow citizens.

- I am free. Should the government, of any foreign power or EVEN MY OWN, attempt to rob me of the individual choices I can make, they will be met by force of arms and the rage of my conviction, and THEY WILL BE DEFEATED.

As our forefathers, ALL OUR FOREFATHERS, said....

No man, you know what a Crow rip-off is? The Crow 2 City of Angels. That's a rip-off.

The whole point is that there is a solid block of comic fans out there that would reject any Joker that wasn't presented in a "The Killing Joke" fashion. I like this re-invention.

Ras-Al-Ghul was different but since he was obscure to the larger public, nobody flipped out. The Scarecrow was also different in a fashon, with differing motives driving his sadism, but again, nobody flipped out. When they finally get around to the Joker, it's a Crow rip-off. I watched an interview with the director in late 2007 where he expressed hesitation at getting to the Joker so quickly as he knew that since the character was so iconic, ANY re-invention would be seen as a violation of SOMETHING.

Besides chris, you just accepted that Max G was a copy of Faith from BTvS. But I'll bet you don't love that character any less. I just re-watched Dark Angel season 1 again last week, and it does have it's moments, my opinion rises.

Funny someone should mention Killing Joke..

I was just about to slide in this quote from there.
"All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day. You had a bad day once, am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed. Why else would you dress up as a flying rat? You had a bad day, and it drove you as crazy as everybody else... Only you won't admit it!"

So far none of the movies have imop hit the quality bar Batman really deserves - a big part of that is so far the actors playing batsie have been convincing as Batman, or as Bruce, but never both.

If he were prettier, I'd have said to go with Ron Pearlman, but alas, he'd never be a convincing Bruce, for all that he'd nail Batso down solid.

I'm never gonna find Batman convincing without the jaw, you gotta have the jaw... *smirk*

Quote:

Love Like Blood

We must play our lives like soldiers in the field
But life is short i'm running faster all the time
Strength and beauty destined to decay
So cut the rose in full bloom
'til the fearless come and the act is done
A love like blood, a love like blood
Everyday through all frustration and despair
Love and hate fight with burning hearts
'til legends live and man is god again
(and self-preservation rules the day no more)
We must dream of promised lands and fields
That never fade in season
As we move towards no end we learn to die
Red tears are shed on grey
