"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Obama takes presidential oath again after stumble

WASHINGTON – After the flub heard around the world, President Barack Obama has taken the oath of office. Again. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath to Obama on Wednesday night at the White House — a rare do-over. The surprise moment came in response to Tuesday's much-noticed stumble, when Roberts got the words of the oath a little off, which prompted Obama to do so, too.
Don't worry, the White House says: Obama has still been president since noon on Inauguration Day.
Nevertheless, Obama and Roberts went through the drill again out of what White House counsel Greg Craig called "an abundance of caution."
This time, the scene was the White House Map Room in front of a small group of reporters, not the Capitol platform before the whole watching world.
"We decided that because it was so much fun ...," Obama joked to reporters who followed press secretary Robert Gibbs into the room. No TV camera crews or news photographers were allowed in. A few of Obama's closest aides were there, along with a White House photographer.
Roberts put on his black robe.
"Are you ready to take the oath?" he said.
"Yes, I am," Obama said. "And we're going to do it very slowly."
Roberts then led Obama through the oath without any missteps.
The president said he did not have his Bible with him, but that the oath was binding anyway.
The original, bungled version on Tuesday caught observers by surprise and then got replayed on cable news shows.
It happened when Obama interrupted Roberts midway through the opening line, in which the president repeats his name and solemnly swears.
Next in the oath is the phrase " ... that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States." But Roberts rearranged the order of the words, not saying "faithfully" until after "president of the United States."
That appeared to throw Obama off. He stopped abruptly at the word "execute."
Recognizing something was off, Roberts then repeated the phrase, putting "faithfully" in the right place but without repeating "execute."
But Obama then repeated Roberts' original, incorrect version: "... the office of president of the United States faithfully."
Craig, the White House lawyer, said in a statement Wednesday evening: "We believe the oath of office was administered effectively and that the president was sworn in appropriately yesterday. Yet the oath appears in the Constitution itself. And out of the abundance of caution, because there was one word out of sequence, Chief Justice John Roberts will administer the oath a second time."
The Constitution is clear about the exact wording of the oath and as a result, some constitutional experts have said that a do-over probably wasn't necessary but also couldn't hurt. Two other previous presidents have repeated the oath because of similar issues, Calvin Coolidge and Chester A. Arthur.

Dang. I was waiting for the conspiracy theorists to insist that he isn't really the President because the oath wasn't correctly administered.

Actually, that's a new one. I know you think he's a Jew-British-knight-of-Kenya-and-Indonesia-because-Hawaii-isn't-a-state-anyway, but I did not realize he doesn't have a green card.

I'd bet you're wrong on that one. I'm fairly sure that he DOES have a security clearance, or he couldn't be Chief of Staff.

As a professor of constitutional law, Obama is automatically more qualified to protect the constitution, even if he was born on Mars.

Meanwhile, though Islam forbids it, he could be a secret muslim. Or, this could just be a cover for some sort of east africa shamanistic sorcery cult, not voodoo though, don't get your east africans and west africans mixed up, if you do, you'll have a very large war that is still going on and still not getting reported.

Most people think that Obama is in a minority as an African American, but as a Luo-American, he's in a rather extreme minority. So, bring on the crazy, let's not stop short here.

We will now live in thatched huts, speak a nilo-saharan language, and it will become a clothing optional country...

DREAMTROVE

Okay, so the media isn't fair and balanced, this isn't news. I mean, it's not like all of a sudden the media became democrat owned overnight. The last republican with the media behind him was probably Eisenhower. But it's not like they didn't have Kennedy's back or FDRs.

But that's not Obama's fault. He didn't rig the media. He's not glued to the donkey. If Bush had been a democrat, Obama might have run as a republican. This is the reality for most people running for any office, their party affiliation is decided by who they're running against, and who they know. It's the sports fans who go wild about wedge issues, and wave the red and blue flags.

I want everyone to rewind to the speeches that everyone gave in this primary season. Everyone basically got up and said the democratic party is the party of the people blah blah, Barack said we're not democrats and republicans, we're americans. Well, we're americans with a new president, Barack Hussein Obama.

I didn't vote for the guy, but so far he's been a pleasant surprise, outside of the Clintonistas that he rode in with the him, I like the guy.

Oh, anyone notice that he's been appointing special envoys to pre-empt Hillary This dude is clever. It's going to take a while to shake a case of the Clintons, but here's to hoping he does.

I think thats what they were thinking. But it was all for show. The first document the President signed when they went into the Capital was the Oath. Signing it makes it legal and officially puts the President on the Federal payroll.

Let me ask you this. If speaking the oath, as written, is a mandatory requirement, does the Constitution bar persons who are mute or who do not speak English, or who have some sort of disorder or injury? Constitutionally I say no, but what do you folks think?

Where's he going to get a bible on short notice? Its not like they leave those things laying around.

Using a bible is a tradition, not a requirement. They also could have used a different Judge, even a State Judge, or even a Justice of the Peace.

That among other things, yeah.

Not sure if the dynamic is Obama using Biden to keep his own hands clean or Biden using Obama as a clean-cut front, but clearly they're working together with Obamas hopeful idealism, and Biden knowing which backs to put the knives in - so far it's workin out pretty good, and finally I have some concept of what Bidens intentions are for the moment.

He seems intent on "clearing the deck" of obstructionist folk who have a tendancy to make deals, sandbag or ignore their part of it while pursuing an agenda at odds to the plan, which is the Clintonistas in spades, and I can hardly wait to see what's in store for Pelosi, cause I *know* that's comin prolly within 3-4 months if not sooner.

The ultimate intention here seems to be getting together an administration that isn't so mired in it's own petty internal infighting that it would be utterly ineffective, something I think a lotta folks were worried about the minute the Clintonistas came on board, but them who won't play ball are gonna find themselves benched in a hurry, I think.

Of course, the long-term intentions are something to be concerned about, but as long as the new prez is operating within his Constitutional Authority and sorting out the hideous disaster the former administration left of this place*, imma leave it be, maybe even help it along.

Not to mention looting it - the reaction of Obamas tech guys to the computer equipment was pretty funny given what kind of antiquated crap they were stuck with to start from...

Of course, if that's all that's left, where did the hi-tech stuff they spent so much taxpayer money on GO? did they just pocket the money, which I doubt since it was paid out and gear was shipped - or did they take a lot of it with them when they left not out of petty spite, but because it contains information the former administration wasn't sure enough they could wipe completely ?

That's a followup I'd very much like to see, with a subpeano and a forensics team from the FBI overseen by a civilian review board who take a security oath.

Ain't gonna happen given that it would cause so much fallout it'd plunge us into a serious crisis all by itself, but a guy can wish, meh.

Yes. Yes I did. And I've refrained from mentioning it because I didn't want to piss off the women-folk around here. I'm glad he put Hillary in a position of power- and I'm glad he's subverting that power at every step and turn. Not because she's a woman, but because she's a Clinton!

He was more or less forced to take her in, in some capacity fairly high up, so he did, and then he did a turnabout on her and pulled the rug out from under her. It's not like she can cry to the media about it, because he did make her Secretary of State - he just never promised that it would be all that powerful a position in his administration!

Good on ya, Mister President.

Constitutionally, I think it would preclude such a person from the office. That's if you want to be a STRICT Constitutionalist about it. In reality, though, a person who couldn't give a speech isn't very likely to be President in the first place. Or at least, that's what I used to think. I mighta misunderestimated the ability of the people to fool me don't get fooled again! ;)

I don't think the Constitution would bar someone who was mute or otherwise disabled, no. I think they'd have a hell of a time running and winning, but they wouldn't be barred. Someone who doesn't speak English? Well, I suppose it would be possible to be born here, spend at least fifteen years residing in the country, and reach the required age without speaking any English... I don't think it's likely, and again I don't think such a person would have an easy time of it when it came to being elected to office. The majority of this country still speaks English, after all.

Anyway, sure you can live here that long and no speak English. Not just chinatown and little italy, but we have whole territories in America that don't speak English. Yes, nothing anywhere is remotely barring someone from PR running for president, or for that matter, Sai Pan.
