There was this Hindi guy who worked at Diamond Cab, and we did *not* get on well cause he either figured out what my general beliefs were or somebody told him (I figure the latter just to grind his gears, he was a bit of a jerk) - and he threw something of a hissy and confronted me about it.

I told him it was none of his damned business, but since he cared so much, YES, that was true and invited him to make something of it.

Ever since he's referred to me as "That F**king Mongoose", but since he wouldn't come near me after that, it ain't like I cared - but he most certainly meant it in a derogatory fashion.

Cabbies are pretty used to being insulted though, was kinda funny that the main beef of the two arabic guys I worked with was that americans weren't inventive *enough* when slinging racist or nationalist insults at them.

I know, lol!

I believe he meant it to mean sneaky, vicious and bloodthirsty though, given the context of the argument and what it was about - but even that's a pathetic insult when addressed to someone who IS.

Might have been a cultural thing, hell if I know...

Hmm. I dug on this one and all I could get was "Game Killer." It would have to be an Indian. Okay, how about Meerkat, anyone?
Or any other colorful ones. It's true, ours get old. I mean, once you've used a**hole to refer to someone obnoxious, it really isn't big enough to cover Bush. Yet, at the same time Knight of the British Empire doesn't even seem to make it into the insult category. Neocon, globalist are self descriptors. I think that we need to go with something else. Trombiculid, a parasitic mite that feeds off of a warthog. It seems to be a kind of chigger.

One of my favorite cut downs of all time is Queen's "Death on Two Legs", about their former manager. One phrase that always confused me is "old barrow boy", I understand what a "barrow boy" is but why is it considered a derogatory term. Maybe one of you Brits can help on this one.

I really like "big talking small fry". What a great cut down.

Quote:

Words and music by Freddie Mercury
You suck my blood like a leech
You break the law and you preach
Screw my brain till it hurts
You've taken all my money
And you want more
Misguided old mule with your pig headed rules
With your narrow minded cronies
Who are fools of the first division
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart of your own
Kill joy bad guy big talking small fry
You're just an old barrow boy
Have you found a new toy to replace me?
Can you face me?
But now you can kiss my ass goodbye
Feel good are you satisfied?
Do you feel like suicide?
(I think you should)
Is your conscience all right
Does it plague you at night?
Do you feel good feel good?
You talk like a big business tycoon
You're just a hot air balloon
So no one gives you a damn
You're just an overgrown schoolboy
Let me tan your hide
A dog with disease
You're the king of the 'sleaze'
Put your money where your mouth is
Mister know-all
Was the fin on your back
Part of the deal? (Shark)
Death on two legs
You're tearing me apart
Death on two legs
You've never had a heart (you never did) of your own
(Right from the start)
Insane you should be put inside
You're a sewer rat decaying in a cesspool of pride
Should be made unemployed
Then make yourself null and void
Make me feel good I feel good

Well, I suppose it wouldn't offend most westerners.

One of the minor patrons or affinities is Kaliyan a subform of Kali, best described in westron terms as a disobediant, smack talking, disrespectful jerk full of cunning and savagery, representing the basest natures of man in combination with his intellect with just enough forebearance and mercy to be tolerated but never liked, by the pantheon.

Best analogy to better known beliefs would be a Modi, son of Thor, who would eventually inherent Mjollnir along with his brother, but whereas Modi is more a single-aspect diesm, Kaliyan is more complex and based on a trickster archetype of malicious and capricious nature closer to Loki in thought, but not nearly that malicious nor especially inimical to humanity - it's hard to describe.

Ok, how bout this...

Imagine bugs bunny with a foul mouth, nasty disposition and real power behind it, but pleased enough with his lot to not meddle overtly.

Best I can do with it, which ain't too hot, but that's the general idea.

Why it set the guy off so bad though, I couldn't tellya.

I got all of those refs actually, but I think that Bugs Bunny as an unseelie spirit is humorous, but probably true. It doesn't not require any change in demeanor. You don't need the objective hostility to be the nefarious trickster.

Whether or not Bugs has the respect of his peers, I'm never clear on, except that he doesn't care.

Think, four canines all with very different connotations when applied to a female. A man is usually a pig, there were times when he might have been a dog, or even a cat.

No one ever calls you a mongoose.

To be a 'cool cat' is a compliment. Yet a pussy, means you're weak, scared and puny. And to be a " pussy cat " means you're gentle, and mild, but not in a derogatory way. Not sure if Michael Vick's legal problems will affect any of this, but among blacks, 'dog' is a word favorable for males, and poodles in specific, for females.

Though not mongoose, I know of one particular football team's offense which was associated w/ meerkats.

I'd imagine that has more to do with frequency of use than anything else. I hear the British don't have as much of a problem with it.

Also, just the sound of "cunt" is very powerful - one syllable, hard "c," sharp "t."

I rarely hear the C word. And as for the British having less of a problem with it, I'm a bit perplexed. In Lily Allen's "explicit" album "Alight, Still", the song Friday Night, the C word is censored, though words like 'fucking' aren't. I dunno if that's an American thing, edited through I-Tunes , or what, but I find it odd that 'fucking' would be fine, and 'cunt' not. I don't know if a completely unedited version is sold in the UK or not, but it's curious that there's any censoring on an explicit labled album.

Well, cunt is usually considered worse than fuck in America. But, I agree, it's strange that they don't have a completely uncensored version on iTunes.

I think you're on to something there.

It just sounds aggressive and harsh - taking away even the implication of softness (or weakness) as an 'acceptable' feminine attribute (like with "pussy") and just leaving an impression of ugliness, disgust and worthlessness.

When you couple that with the general implication of "female genitalia = weak/bad", you get something that doesn't feel like mere belittling of women, it feels like an aggressive condemnation. Like hate. Or violence.

The word just makes me absolutely uncomfortable, and even when women use it, there seems to be an implication of aggression. It's one of the few swearwords that actually make me think less of a person using it.

It's likely been censored by American censors. Cunt really isn't that bad over here. It's no worse if said to a man or a woman either.

American censors are pretty strict, they'll even swap Cookie for Biscuit, let alone cunt.

Very true, but the sound of an -a- between these two letters is much more open and less aggressive than the -un- that is just sort of pushed forth from a barely opened mouth.

Compare:

cat brat splat bat chat rat matt fat

Even if it's short, you still open your mouth a bit and stretch the vowel a tiny wee bit. That eases the hard edges of the consonants and makes the combination sound fairly neutral.

cunt brunt shunt hunt stunt grunt blunt

All of these words sound a little bit aggressive and they certainly invite a grunt-like language, and it's just over all a very closed-mouth syllable, even more so than if you leave out the -n-. The way your mouth moves forming the combination of u-n-t leaves no room for softness or stretching of any kind. It comes out harsh.

'Hunt' sounds a lot more aggressive than 'hunting', I think, because the latter has that stretchy softness of the -ing.

Combine that with pre-existing negative connotations and you get a word that sounds uncomfortably aggressive to a number of people.

Not trying to convince you. Just describing what informs my reaction to the word.

And it's not an insult automatically because it sounds harsh. It's the combination of a particularly harsh-sounding word with pre-existing insult implications that makes this one a sensitive subject.

Okay, here's a link to a story about Shush Limpdick, er, I mean Rush Limpschitz, Neocon Idiot.

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/01/20/limbaugh-obama-fail/

He flat out says that he hopes Obama fails. What a country, that a man with absolutely no talent and no redeeming values can say whatever he wants.
And this after Bush and friends desparately tried to destroy the Constitution, brick by brick.

The President may have made too many campaign promises, that critics from all sectors of the political spectrum have voiced their concern, but at least he's trying to save this country from circling the drain. For 8 years we have been subjected to one of the most ineffectual administration since Carter's run in office. History, says Bush, will judge him, hate to say it but we don't need no stinking history to judge you - we already know.

Record thievary, corruption, graft, greed, cronism, embezzlement, books cooked, sabotage, exposing CIA operatives to cover lies, WMDs, Abu Ghraib, Halliburton conflict of interest, Mission Accomplished, Donald Rumsfeld, Financial deregulation, financial ruin, broken promises to the victims of 9/11, August letters, refusal to have NSA Rice testify (only after much criticism and public outcry did this change), spying on Americans (ordinary everyday Americans, particularly American soldiers), failure to act upon the discovery of economic meltdown.

The list could go on. Someone should write a book, oh wait, several have.

Shiny, had you taken time to inform yourself on the facts before hand, you'd not be making such an embarassment of yourself now.

Bush treid as early as 2003 to fix the problems with Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac, which had a major impact on what we're dealing with now. But you don't care for details, like how it was Barney Frank and Chris Dodd who blocked any attempt to the GOP to set up more sound oversight. Nor do you even care that it was Richard Armatige, not Scooter Libby or Dick Cheney who outed CIA desk jockey, ( not covert operative ) Val Plame. Bush had nothing to DO with that. Oh, an the courts have ruled on the so called " spying ", which the Left claims was illegal, really wasn't. Nice try there too.

Record thievary, corruption, graft, greed, cronism, embezzlement, books cooked, sabotage,...,( Blagojavich, Spitzer, Jim McGreevey, Charles Rangel ) these are far more crimes of the Left, not Bush's.

As for Rush, he's already made a name for himself in the radio hall of fame. Been doing his show for 20+ yrs, and had dominated his industry through out his career. If it was so easy, the Left and their brain trust at Air America would have taken the country by storm. How's that workin' out for them these days ?

Best take some time to educate yourself, and go beyond the headlines of your Left wing dominated newspaper.

I don't know about this specific example, because rat bastard doesn't strike me as particularly disturbing.

But I'll agree that motherfucker has lost pretty much any impact it may ever have had due to overuse. It's just cute and silly these days. Aside from being a swearword, I mean.

Frequency can be a factor, but I think that there is not necessarily a one-way influence in that regard. It's probably used less frequently because it has such deeply negative connotations, which increases its impact when it is used. A circular amplification, if you will.

I can still remember hearing a female DJ on WREK, the Georgia Tech student station, saying "That was 'Lover' by Caravan, off their Stunning Cunts album.", followed by a minute of dead air.

"Keep the Shiny side up"
