The number one traditional economic selfish reason for having kids is to have someone to take care of you when you get older. Having someone to help out around the farm/shop/store for only room and board is pretty good. In some cultures you can get a nice bride-price when you marry off your daughter. You might also want someone to carry on the family line and conserve the resources the family has accumulated.

Of course, this assumes that the only reasons for having children are selfish ones.

Well, according to sociobiology the only reason to have children ARE selfish ones!

We have an entire view of "human nature" and a whole economic system built on selfishness and greed. Greed is good, neh? It's built into our views of biology (sociobiology), the progression of the species (social Darwinism), and almost everything else. So, as I said before... all of this is supposed to come to a screeching halt where women are concerned? Women aren't "basically" greedy? Women aren't supposed to be in the dog-eat-dog economic picture? Women are a whole 'nother species that operate by different rules?

Not saying that's the case, but... generally... I find that peeps do what society rewards them to do. You can't set up a society to reward one set of behaviors and then expect a whole group of people not to respond or participate.
