I watched the video and agree that it appears to be a excessive use of force.

The victim/Defendant was found guilty of resisting arrest.

The cop no longer works for the Department and is being sued.

Most bad things never should have happened in the first place. That's why they'er called bad things.

But shit happens, people are human (for good or bad). The guy is facing consequences for his action, and the woman will probably get a good payday. I agree with Hero (which is a rarity, mind you).

That's not my point.

Its the idea that this "police officer" thought he had the RIGHT to stop someone for riding their bike on the sidewalk. And THEN, to use all the force he wanted, including punches, mace, ect to bring her down.

I mean C'MON!

I guess we are all supposed to just lay down so they can beat on us whenever they feel like it. Cus they are the LAW, don'cha know?

Also, its probably a good thing she wasn't near any subways, right?

Yes, he thought it and he's been sacked and is being sued. What more do you expect? People can't turn back time to make sure he never did it in the first place.

If you want to rant about police megalomania, wouldn't an example where the cop gets away with it be better?

This problem is that there are too many laws. Every time an officer is tasked with enforcing a law, there is the risk of this kind of mishap. That's why some of us get so upset when people want to use the force of law to manipulate society in ways they think are beneficial (seat-belt laws, for example). We need to be cognizant that every single law we pass creates the potential for violence in its enforcement.

I had a cop as a friend...loong time ago.

He told me that he was glad when they come out with more laws. That way he has an excuse to "get at" someone and maybe find a bigger law being broken. (I.E. possible promotion ect)

We stopped being friends shortly after he said that.

Last night at a local convenience store the cops pulled over a guy for drunk driving, & he cursed at them, forcing them to beat him to the pavement and bounce his head, face first, into an icy wet ground, repeatedly. I had a cop friend. Before he was a cop, he was married to a beautiful rich wife, going to college to be an air traffic controller. Somewhere he became a cop, got divorced, scrared his Christian parents by wearing his gun in their house (my former home). His new wife was dog fugly and "from the illegal drug business", and he told me he knew where all the organized crime businesses were located in the county, pointing some out to me (to extort bribes from them). Zero discussion of protecting constitutional rights. And he was a NICE cop.

As a soldier myself, I told him the local police are literally the local military, and their job is to defend the community from war by criminals (not to steal from the sheeple).

Now I've studied The Law, own my own law library, participated in multimillion-dollar litigation, prosecuted military commanders, even attended 3L law college at University of TN, and I realize 99% of what police and govt do is illegal, scientifically designed to violently overthrow USA. Under US Code, the punishment for treason is death.

Well, if it's illegal to ride a bike on the sidewalk, then yeah, he did have a right, and an obligation.

Of course striking her was taking it too far, and he is facing the consequences.

No one is saying we should just lay down for beatings, but at the same time, I don't think anyone should be able to ignore the law just cause they want to.

She screwed up, then they screwed up worse, and she'll end up better off financially for it.

I don't see a big deal. if the cop was getting off, then I'd be pissed, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I find the notion that a financial reward makes adequate amends for this a bit naive. Violent crime leaves deep psychological wounds that last much longer than you might expect.

I've been the victim of such crime twice in my life. The most recent was a couple of years ago when I was carjacked. Many years before that I was stopped by a cop (I later found out that the reason I was stopped was for not switching my lights to low-beam when we passed) and received a beating much like the one in the video.

I barely remember the carjacking. All they wanted was my car. The police beating, however, still hangs with me as the bitterest of memories. And not because of the physical pain. What hangs with me most was the emotions it aroused. That was the only time in my life that I would have killed a person if I could have. I'd have done it and felt I was making the world a better place. That's an ugly thing to know about yourself it makes me sick in gut to think about even now.
