I thought Karzai was elected. He also hates the idea of war with Pakistan. Yes, he's opposed to all out war with the Taliban, he doesn't want a civil war. He wants them as a political party. He want to not be killed, which is what supporting US policy gets you in that unstable part of the world.

Perhaps Obama is smarter than he looks

the system of government Bush installed had no real checks or balances, foreign aid was doled out to reward the loyalty of regional governors and anyone who did not tow the party line was frozen out ( as well as those who voted for them )

This is why the insurgency has grown year after year

Perhaps a fair system of government, with its checks and balances to its people and not its foreign overlords will be the start of peace for Afghanistan...

certainly military force will not work to put things back together
