A while back, I proposed the idea of having the police wear head-mounted cameras....to record what they do and how they do it. More as a way of keeping the cops honest, than anything else.

But, it was pointed out that this would just add ANOTHER layer to the already insane amount of cameras stealing our privacy.

So, along comes Britain (again). Lol they are just a test bed for Nanny State nonsense.

I dunno, so long as the officer themselves cannot edit, erase or alter the memory card, the tradeoff in reining in police abuses and excesses might be worth the extra hassle.

I say give it a test run on the LAPD and Chicago PD, see if that discourages their mafia bullshit.

Consider that it also prevents them from lying about what YOU said, or saying you threatened them, or pulled a weapon...

Just make damn sure there's a proper chain of custody for the memory cards, and I see that as a positive force more than a negative one, since the officer has to be physically present on the scene to visually observe it, and thus it doesn't qualify as a dragnet.

CCTV cams on the other hand are an invasive dragnet and violation, but I would favor their replacement with this device.

Shit, give 'em to Houston and New Orleans PD, too - they're notoriously corrupt!

Any guesses as to who will by lobbying hardest AGAINST this? My money's on the police unions. The cops want the "right" to watch your every move, 24/7, but they sure as hell don't want to be watched themselves. Why do you suppose that is? And as they always ask us, if they don't have anything to hide, what are they worried about?

"The state would work to implement a pay-per-mile system by 2014 to eliminate tolls inside of Route 128. Officials would track auto use through a chip inside the state’s vehicle inspection sticker. Drivers could get a gas tax refund to avoid double billing."

I theorized they might do this, but I thought it was at least a decade away.

There is one saving grace - if enough people make enough of a stink that idea will go away. People will get transponders - 'cards' - that you can clip to your visor, like they do here for toll roads.

The way I read it, the BBC sounds like they think it's a great idea. I'm sure they think the camera will record some God awful accident that the BBC can play over and over on the TV.

Man, if they ever do that for the PA Turnpike, I will then file a legal claim for every mile travelled at 15MPH or more LESS than the speed limit, since in theory the price is for a well maintained road and speedy transit...

Instead of phony construction zones and endless artifically lowered speed limits designed to frustrate you into "speeding" so they can double fine you.

I mean, 3am on a SUNDAY morning, no workers present, no equipment present, and yet 28 MILES of 30mph, with damn near a dozen cops sitting there with dunkins on the dash just WAITING for someone to lose patience...

And all too often, they don't mark the beginning/end of the zone, or go with "Resume Legal Speed" signs, without informing the driver that while "Legal Speed" might have BEEN 60Mph or more 28 miles back when the zone STARTED, it's actually 55Mph at THIS point.

Oh, and did I mention how much I hate the friggin PA turnpike again ?

At least MI has the damned decency to throw tarps over those signs when the workers go home.

So noone has a problem with the government installing, in your car, the means to track you as you go about your daily lives?

Really?

"So noone has a problem with the government installing, in your car, the means to track you as you go about your daily lives?

My suggestion was to raise a stink and make the idea go away. I also mentioned an alternative, which is a clip-on optional transponder as an alternative to stopping at the toll booth, as they do here in So Cal.

Obviously, some of us do - the day I made the last payment on that Oldsmobile POS I rendered all the little black boxes in there inoperable.

And I do indeed prefer paying cash for tolls, for the very reasons you mention - but if they were to chip it, it would open the door for substantial legal retaliation for the phony construction zones, speed traps and other hassles, cause you could PROVE that taking the turnpike actually slowed your journey significantly with no benefit to you and demand your money back...

The mere threat of which, helped along by the good folk at http://www.motorists.org/ and http://www.thenewspaper.com/ would sink this proposition handily before they even got it off the ground.

I thought that was kinda obvious from my hate fueled rant there, but maybe not so much...
