"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

This is surprising indeed. I didn't think Pelosi or Reid had the stones to oppose Obama; hell, they barely opposed Bush on anything substantive!

But here they both are, opposing a renewal of the AWB. Will wonders never cease?

My favorite quote from the article? Nancy Pelosi said, "I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now."

I'm rather in shock. Maybe these two have realized that even Democrats don't have much use for them. Reid has actually opposed the AWB before, voting against it in '94.

And it's almost certain that both of them - and a number of other Democrats - look at what happened in the wake of the '94 AWB, when Democrats lost control of Congress less than 3 months after voting the law into effect.

Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.

I think this is more a matter of them beginning to realize how damn thin that ice they're standing on really is, especially with the bailout ire, they keep pushing folk, torches and pitchforks might start lookin like a good idea.

And that's what they fear, protestors who won't stay in their little free speech zone five miles away in the basement of a parking garage, but who might actually decide to DO something about the objects of their ire.

So they're tossing a little marie antoinette cake to the masses and hoping for short memories till after they secure their position.

Y'all have any sense, you damn well better be workin like a dog on that third party ambush, to be honest...

Frem:

No doubt they're doing it only to save their own bacon, but at this point, in this country, I'll take the little victories wherever I can find them.

*IF* they've realized that they are horribly unpopular, even within their party (I'm pretty damne left-wing myself, and I can't stomach either Pelosi or Reid - not necessarily because of their beliefs, but because they don't have the nuts to stand up for those beliefs. Ever.)

So do I think they believe that the AWB is a bad thing? I think they'd probably agree that even if it weren't a bad law (and it is, in spades), at least at this point in time it's a bad idea, and not something you want to ram down the throats of those who are already "bitter, clinging to their guns and their religion"...

Do I think this is the end of the story? Not for a moment. This is just Round One. They'll be back, when they think they've got the political support to try it again. For right now, it seems pretty clear that they DON'T have that support, and that we really do have much bigger problems to deal with. And for right now, apparently Eric Holder *doesn't* understand that - and likely never will.

Hold steady, keep both hands on the wheel, and at least one foot on Congress's throat, and we'll drive out of this mess...

They're just playing good cop to Obama's bad cop. It's just a tactic to consolidate a bigger Democrat base. As soon as they feel they have limited fear of losing power over the gun issue, the AWB and other anti-gun legislation will regain priority.

So we hit them now, as soon as possible, before they have entrenched their position, and put them in proper terror of their constituents, by getting some people in there who ain't part of the one and a half party machine.
