Palin froze when interviewed by Kouric. And everyone laughed.

Obama was interviewed by Leno, and took a low brow jab at the mentally challneged.....silence.

You can't sugar coat Obama's mind set. When he says something, he means it. This power hungry tool of a president is in charge. To quote his favorite pastor
"God bless America..no...God damn America! The chickens will come home to roost"!

Isn't your post kind of a low-brow jab at the Special Olympics, too? After all, aren't YOU calling all the contestants retards, by saying that they're ALL "mentally challneged [sic]"?

Last time I looked, I couldn't sworn that the Special Olympics were for the physically handicapped as well.

So in making your jab at Obama, you've just joined him in the "Ooooops! Aw, FUCK!" club by saying something really stupid that wasn't at all what you meant to say.

Are did you MEAN to say that all Spcial Olympics participants are retards?

As I posted in another thread mentally challenged/physically impaired. Sorry if I forgot the physically impaired part this time around. That was an oversight....not a jab.

Hey, if your on the same page of Obama with the "special" people bashing then I really feel bad for you. It's in the same vein of Date rape, and cancer jokes. The poorest possible taste. You can defend his snide comment all you want, it just shows your character. With all of your "retard" talk it's pretty obvious. Good luck with your soul, your going to need it.

Not really. More of an injustice thread.

If on the campaign trail Palin or McCain said the exact same thing as Obama, they would have been crucified.

Obama says it, and everything is just peachy. Hell, there are even people on this thread siding with him. That to me is complete, unbridled, blind devotion. In other parts of the country this could be viewed as brainwashing. If Obama ever starts a doomsday cult, these zombies would be the first in line to follow him down. There are a lot of weird people out there that ready to give their life for someone they have never met. Just glad I'm not one of those people.

I think you may be pushing it by implying making off-color remarks indicates a sociopath. Now, I'm fairly liberal, but I don't go much for a lot of politicaly correct hysteria. There are a lot of blanket statements that are offensive, and yet have a high percentage of truth to them. Not 100% truth, not very pretty truth, but truth. Do you censure the ones who embody the stereotype or the ones you think are tasteless for pointing it out? Do you deny the truth of anything that can be seen as offensive? Denied truth doesn't become a lie, and so that way is madness.
Sad to say, everyone has some prejudice. It might be slight, it might be almost unnoticable, it might be a guiding force in behavior, it might only be a guiding force when it comes to one group of people, it might be an ingrained and unconscious slip of a common expression, it might be fought off constantly and not always successfully, but I don't believe no one has it. When it comes to, say, the possibility of disease, there is actually a biological coding for it, the immune system sending a signal below the level of thought to avoid people who might have a disease it hasn't encountered and isn't equipped to deal with. It's true, there's been research into that very thing.
So it might not be terribly PC, but it's still true. Am I siding with him? Not particularly. Do I understand? Yes, I have slips myself, being human.

...At least the man can pick up a newspaper, perhaps even noting the name of it.

Exactly. The next day when I heard there was a controversy I went to Hulu to watch the interview over again. What I heard was, as you say, a self-deprecating remark that, somehow, got blown out of proportion.

Ingrained and unconscious slip of a common expression! And, actually, not by definition an incorrect one. The word 'retard' means, essentially, slow. When you're not fast enough to get somewhere on time, you're tardy. When a substance slows the progress of something like, say, fire, it's a retardant. When you're not thinking fast enough and you do something stupid? Well. Now I understand that the word has slipped under the vast umbrella of slang, but technically the term came into being because the mentally handicapped can be... a little slow. Not pretty, not PC, still true.

You mean to say that Palin and McCain never read from a teleprompter?

Quel suprise!

Hello,

I just noticed that the title of this thread inside the thread and the title of this thread on the main home page are different.

On the main page it says:

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 20:04 - 36 posts (36 today).
Suddenly Palin's botched Kouric interview is... kind of retarded

That's odd.

When you're not thinking fast enough and you do something stupid? Well. Now I understand that the word has slipped under the vast umbrella of slang, but technically the term came into being because the mentally handicapped can be... a little slow. Not pretty, not PC, still true.

Yeah, but they can also articulate coherent speech when they don't read from it....unlike Obama.

No one. Just another black eye for the country.

Glad you don't see it though. I wish I were immune to ugly comments from the frikkin president.

So, I guess you don't realize how equivocating stupidity and the mentally disabled is insulting, then. In the first place, being mentally disabled is very different from being stupid; in the second place, stupidity is generally a negative trait, which adds to the way that people generally think being "retarded" is a negative trait.

I consider "retard" as pretty much on the same level with "cunt" and "n*gg*r" in terms of how ugly they are, whether or not most people recognize it.

As for my "retard" talk - like Carlos Mencia says, if you're retarded, you're not offended by it, 'cause you don't get the jokes in the first place. And if you're offended, then you're not retarded.

Just what exactly is so hilarious about making fun of the mentally disabled? Seriously, I'd like to hear you (or anyone) explain that.

That thing about the Special Olypics was bad, but at least Obama realized what he'd said and apologized not too long after. Palin's interview isn't on the same level - comparing her remarks about Obama "pallin' around with terrorists" would be more apt. And, I don't remember hearing anything about her apologizing for that, although I could be wrong.

The fact that people are defending Obama's remark doesn't sit well with me, though. He recognized that what he said was wrong; why don't they?

America loves a winner!

Obama didn't apologize for his remarks until the back lash had already started to come in, and his handlers told him he screwed the pooch.

Palin, despite the poor showing w/ Couric, was 100% right in describing Obama ' pallin' around w/ terrorist '. Because that's EXACTLY what he did with Ayers. I hope she never apologized for that, because she had no reason to do so.

Again, had he KNOWN it was wrong, he'd have known how it sounded, for the PRESIDENT on national t.v. to say such a thing, and quickly asked for forgiveness. He didn't, because he didn't have that kind of awareness, and doesn't actually see this as something for which he needed to apologize.

"As much as I respect what he's doing, really the economy is something he should focus on more than the brackets. "

The U.S. economy WAS on fire under Bush, for 6 years. Until the Democrats took control of Congress. It's been all down hill since then.

The way I took it is that he did, indeed, mean for it to be self-deprecating, but the wording he used was poorly chosen off the cuff. There is usually one reason to go on The Tonight Show and that is to joke around with Jay Leno. It may have been okay for Robin Williams or Matt Damon to say that kind of thing (I'm just guessing here, perhaps it wouldn't), but not the sitting President of the United States. Obama was trying to be funny and the joke fell flat. Whether or not he apologized after the furor started is beside the point. He apologized, so that's that.

But this is kind of why a current President has not gone on Leno; because it's unscripted and anything could go awry. And it did. Not a huge gaffe, but a gaffe nonetheless. It's not the kind of thing where he can sit around and get cozy on a couch with an interviewer and not know, for the most part, what he's going to say. It's the same thing, in a way, with the 60 Minutes interview where he was chuckling while talking about how serious the economy is. Gallows humor? I can understand that, but HIS job is to tell us what's happening and help us understand what's going on, not crack jokes on national television. It just didn't look good in a professional sense.

That's an outright lie, once again. Or one of your less-than-true RapFactsâ„¢.

According to the BBC:

Quote:

President Obama has apologised for a remark he made about disabled athletes during his appearance on a late night talk show.

He compared his bowling technique to watching something from the Special Olympics.

But as soon as he was back on his plane home, Mr Obama telephoned the head of the Special Olympics, Tim Shriver, to say sorry.

AS SOON AS HE WAS BACK ON HIS PLANE. In other words, BEFORE THE SHOW AIRED.

Once again, you've been proven a liar.

Were you all this outraged when Bush poked fun at the blind reporter?

Or when, as governor of Texas, he had retarded people EXECUTED by lethal injection?

Just curious.

I know for AuCoward, making fun of dead Canadian troops is all in light-hearted fun, and making fun of shooting pregnant Palestinian women ("one shot, two kills" is how I believe he phrased it) is all well and good. I'm just not sure I can properly gauge where the bar is in what's "funny" and okay to joke about, and what's off limits and worthy of outrage.

Or is this just so much more phony indignation?
