Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Wednesday that Canada remains committed to its mission in Afghanistan, but he voiced strong concerns about new Afghan legislation that would limit women's rights in that country.

"This is antithetical to our mission in Afghanistan," Harper said in an interview with CBC News.

The new Afghan family law would reportedly make it illegal for women to refuse their husbands sex, leave the house without their permission or have custody of children.

Hopefully that works.

Hello!

I honestly think we should use all political pressure at our disposal to improve that country while pulling our military away.

I think the problem isn't a Military one, it is the garbage excuse for a political system forced upon these people.

Unchecked Executive power, corruption, drug peddling, etc and now rolling back what was previously claimed as progress.

If I was an Afghan, I would likely be trying to fight this government and those trying to prop it up as well.

Problem is, I don't see a way out of this

Best case it stays the same until the west loses interest, leaves, then it all comes apart

Worst case, Pakistan falls apart and a bigger mess encompasses the region, uniting a whole lot of people with a common enemy.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

I was pointing out years ago how our invasion to 'free the women from brutal oppression' (the words of invasion supporters, not mine) had created instead a warlord- and regressive-dominated society.
It's not that I don't care. It's just - how long can you before you give up ?

I think that's rather unfair. By all accounts things are certainly no worse than they were under the Taliban. At least Women are starting to have the opportunity to get education now.

Yup, and there's every likelihood that Afghan women would have had more rights under the Russians, too - but instead, we backed Osama and his merry little band, and - whether indirectly or directly - brought about the rule of the Taliban. So apparently, Afghan women having little or no rights is a policy we've supported for quite some time.

"By all accounts things are certainly no worse than they were under the Taliban."

But no better, either. We have not 'saved' the women from anything.

"At least Women are starting to have the opportunity to get education now."

Eh - under the Russians women became doctors, engineers, scientists. All undone in a generation.

Last fall, Shamsia, 17, was attacked along with a dozen other students and teachers at Mirwais Mena Girls' School in Kandahar, by men believed to be Taliban.
But this month, in an interview with Al-Jazeera at a secret location in Kabul, Shamsia Husseini said she had been attacked a second time and this time she and her family fled Kandahar, traditionally a Taliban stronghold.
After the first attack, and the school girls' elevation into national heroes, the government of Hamid Karzai promised their families they would be protected. They would be given a special bus, a footbridge across the busy road in front of the school and greater police protection at the school, which was built in 2003 by Japan.
None of the promises was kept.

What has Judeo-Christian ideals got to do with rights for anyone? Judeo-Christian ideals are pretty much identical to those of Muslims, extremists of all camps are really just preaching from the same song book.

Both points apply.

And while not our business from a political standpoint, as fellow human beings, some folks consider it worth effort on a private, personal scale.

I am a wholehearted supporter of RAWA myself, one of the former english speaking contacts sent me a very touching wall poster a while back, but sadly wound up being "collateral damage" from one of our bombs not long after.

http://www.rawa.org/index.php

While they're less aggressive than I would like, they're good people and worth supporting.

" not our business from a political standpoint "

the government that is putting this in only exists because western soldiers are keeping them in power. I think that make it our business, and if they no longer want our troops to prevent the people of that country from showing them their dissatisfaction...

maybe starting from scratch the fourth time in recent history will take.

Hell, if we're gonna use our troops to prop up yet another puppet government with the oh so obvious throwdown and backlash gonna come from it like every damn time before...

And since we're propping it up and to hell with the locals opinion of it, as usual...

I say why not just go all the way and put the women IN CHARGE, and make the MEN start wearing them friggin burkas under threat of a stoning!

I mean, if we're gonna be evil puppetmasters and all, yanno...

Yes, that was tongue in cheek, I'll leave it to you to figure out how much.
