Hello,

It appears to me as if he did bow.

That being the case, I am not disturbed.

I sometimes find myself bowing to people. Just the other day I held a restaurant door open for an elderly couple, and when they hesitated to precede me, I gave a gentle bow and sweep of my arm to indicate that they should go ahead.

That's nice, Anthony, but you're not a head of state. There are rules for such situations, and I don't believe that any U.S. President has bowed to another head of state before.

Just curious, but whats the official procedure for the President when dealing with the Japanese head of state?

Do they both bow at the equal level and at the same time, or do they not bow at all?

I believe the procedure in Japan is that they both shake hands, then they look up into the sky for a wayward North Korean nuclear warhead missile buzzing overhead. Then they duck and cover together, and whisper secret plans to obtain defense attorneys for captured Somali pirates.

I think in Japan it's the culture that everyone bows to each other. The bow is their handshake. But those who are inferior bow lower than those higher than themselves. So when an employee and boss bow to each other the employee would bow so his head is slightly below his boss's head. Heads of State, I imagine, would bow at equal heights.

"Do they both bow at the equal level and at the same time, or do they not bow at all?"

What I remember is that they shake hands then bow at the same time. I don't think USers have the depth and timing of bow calibrated quite as well as the Japanese do. So I personally don't put too much stock in small differences between them.

Apparently, there's no protocol dictating that a President should bow at all. Clinton nearly slipped up and bowed to the Emperor of Japan, once. What a tragedy that would have been, right? Showing the courtesy of the culture to one of their highest personages is certainly a mistake. It's probably fine if their diplomats want to bow to US statemen, but they should never bow to them, because America makes all the rules.
I'm just wondering why Obama hasn't been attacked for his courtesy before, when he gave a bow to Her Majesty the Queen of England. After he had reached her and properly shaken her hand, even. No reaching forward to shake hands and bending forward in the process, there, just a nice little bob as he thanked her. What a fool.

Well Rue and Signy, I have to say that you win this round. It's a silly attack on Obama. There's nothing wrong, honestly, with Obama bowing, or shaking hands, or whatever. None of that really matters to me at all. It's a very weak argument against Obama. My ilk should have plenty of other things to be far more concerned about. I take some jabs at the guy in jest, but I have not yet sunk to the hate-Obama level as many on my side have. We'll see how it goes.

In response to Rue's photo's

The first one . . . bowing . . . kinda to a religious leader . . . not so bad.

Second one . . . obviously being presented a medal of some kind and he's looking down at it . . . that's okay.

Third one . . . I think I heard somewhere it's a custom in the Middle East for men to hold hands . . . don't know why . . . still iffy . . . looks odd . . . but okay . . . kinda.

Fourth one . . . a simple game of "Duck, Duck, Goose" and the lady was obviously upset that he chose her as the goose. Don't you guys see that?

Fifth one . . . I got nothin'.

Yeah, but you have to remember that Rappo and his li'l crew of sockpuppets around here never REALLY liked Bush in the first place! They only called him the greatest American President in history to be nice; they never really meant it.

Hey. I have a friend who's Muslim. She's the nicest person I know. And she's been really worried about her family back in Baghdad all through this war.

She doesn't want death to Isreal or to convert Americans by force of arms or any of that, she just wants the goddamn fighting that exiled her parents a couple decades back to STOP.

My impression is, most of the Muslim world is actually that way. Sunni, Shiite, Suufi (who are a PARTICULARLY pacifistic group, which is why few people have heard of them)... It's only the extremists going around trying to kill people. There's a lot of innocent families over there.

Bowing one's head, and a full frontal bow are two separate acts. Bush simply acknowledges the authority of the Pope, as liaison to the big guy upstairs. Bowing to a head of state, ala the King of S.A., where both are at least seen as equals, is a big no no.

No one on the 'left' (which is actually slightly right of middle) made any case against Bush for holding hands, kissing, bowing, or groping.

So, the situations aren't quite the same.

I just find the level of hypocrisy to be quite high, and worth pointing out.
