I think, if that has anything to do with it, it has more likely emboldened the Liberal camp to be more aggressive in their attacks. Certainly it is not the "right-leaning" peeps that are "calling out" Auraptor. But I suspect it just has to do with the loss of community, because I don’t feel any love from my fellow browncoats.

Wacky wingnut fun.

JewelStaiteFan, Keep up the great work here! And DON'T EVER seriously engage them. Just mock and insult them as they justly deserve. You owe them nothing, no explanations, no debate. The more you and others stand up to them, the more they go nuts. Look above for the most sad and pathetic example of this...Rue, the High Priestess of Landru Lawgivers, spending hours and hours cutting & pasting or re-typing my post quotes, cherry-picking phrases, and desperately wanting an explanation. All that time spent was time taken away from her usual biased bullshit postings of the day. Funny how she and her RWED flock of feckless followers never ask for explanantions from their own agents of mayhem.

Emboldened. Hmmm. Everything in political & military terms....

As it wasn't the "left-leaning" peeps that were endlessly yelling about "Bush-bashing."

C'mon man, I went through three years on this board under the Bush Admin, and youse guys are gonna fold under 3 months of Obama? You REALLY felt more love from your fellow Browncoats in 2006 than now? I find that hard to believe.

I did. Serenity was still new. Only a year old. Hell, there were parts of the country that were still playing it in theaters that year. There was lots of enthusiasm to offset the snarkiness, but that’s not the case anymore. It's true that the Bush bashing and political hatreds existed even then, but today it has become harder to overlook. As the enthusiasm for Firefly wanes it is replaced with snark and trolling to become more intense.

Glad you agree with me on this isall. See, there's been no love lost here with us mighty Browncoats. And Kris, if yer an inipenent like you say, why wouldn't you support Texas seceeding from the Union? Admit it, yer just a big Govt. handout kinda guy, right? Sort of like a Robin Hood for all the downtrodden victims of society, right? Only two kinds of money, yours and ours. You have no reservations about redistributing my hard-earned money to those you feel haven't been given a break, right? And of course if they dropped out of school, or use drugs, or commit felonies, or gambled their life away recklessly etc, I'm to bail them out too, right?

In examining my own feelings here, I find myself lightening up noticeably on the political front, I'm more trying to have fun here (okay, sometimes VERY snarky fun) than anything else, and I can tell ya, it's because Bush & Cheney aren't strolling the Halls Of Power anymore, but I'd also feel pretty much the same way if McCain & Paleface had won.
I really think some of the bad 'tudes you perceive are just the ones during The Bush era turned around. When progressives were emotional about torture, it was fun to hear us cry. Now it's not the anti-Bush types crying, so it feels very different here to you, at least that's my take.
But there'll be plenty more to complain about in a justifiable manner concerning Obama's decisions & actions; the fun for Conservatives isn't all gone just yet.

Honestly, I'm not sure how to feel about this. On the one hand, I'm ecstatic that you finally figured this out; on the other, I'm depressed that it took you so damned long to figure it out...

And you have no reservations about redistributing MY hard-earned money to those you feel haven't been given a break, either. How else do you explain invading and occupying Iraq, to the tune of what will end up costing us TRILLIONS of tax dollars, and for what? Because apparently THEIR freedom is far more important than OUR freedom - and remember, they hate us for our freedom!

So yeah, if they supported a tyrant (or even if WE supported that same tyrant, but now we're not so sure about him), or used to have WMD, or if they said something we don't like, or if they're some shade less than pasty white, we'll "spread democracy" to them with bombs and guns, right?

The hypocrisy is probably part of the problem. When Bush was in office, the world was always falling a part, the economy was always bad, the Iraq war was always an issue. Then Obama was elected and suddenly the economy is not much of an issue anymore (despite being in a recession), the Iraq war is almost never mentioned, and the world is at peace. Nothing has changed in the last year, aside from the collapse of the economy, but the liberals have decided that none of the issues they were once so passionate about are really that important anymore. I do admit that the hypocrisy gets to me, and probably makes me less willing to take many of you seriously.

In a choice between right-wing fascism & left-wing socialism, the latter will mostly always be preferable IMO, but the real issue here is that Obama is a Centrist, and the socialistic trappings have been with us for some time now, they're nothing new. If you want to label him an "American Socialist," I'd be fine with that thought.

Obama is a centrist? Maybe he campaigned as one, but he certainly hasn't acted as one. As for Festival, don't worry, your fellow automatons of the body will announce when the Red Hour will strike with plenty of advance notice to get a place to sleep it off. Which goes to show how woefully little you know about me, in more ways than one.

1) I work hard for a living. I mean WORK. It's a lot of physical work, much lifting, much moving stuff around with forklift and pallet truck. Yes, I drive a forklift. Yes, I wear a hardhat on occasion.

2) I work my ass off 5, 6, or 7 days a week, as the need arises.

3) I'd get a girlfriend, but that would probably upset my wife. Sunday is our 20th anniversary. Sorry you haven't found anybody yet. ;)

4) There really should be a comma between "girlfriend" and "loser" - unless you're trying to tell me to get a loser girlfriend. And I have to reiterate, I think my wife would get mad.

And honestly, Jewels, my little chickadee - when did you ever see me claim that I'm *NOT* an asshole? Huh? In fact, the truth is quite the contrary - I've said it many times here, I am absolutely an asshole. Hell, I scored 23 out of 24 on Frem's "Asshole Test" - but to be honest, I was really ]trying to be an asshole when taking that test - and it worked! I'm also a magnificent bastard, and a downright son-of-a-bitch.

I guess my only question for you is, why are YOU such an insufferable asshole?

MALACHITE

ETA: Drats! I was trying to reply with Sig's response to Chris's question about what we believe "just because". Here's his quote:

"I believe that the universe is real, that we are a part of it, and that we come to know it through our senses. Just because. I have no real PROOF of that, you see. (Subjective idealists like George Berkeley could make a convincing argument otherwise, from a different set of assumptions.)

I believe in the greatest good for the greatest number, even generations of the future.

I believe that you are defined by what you DO, not what you've convinced yourself about your motives.

I believe that we are all subject to our assumptions, and that the more fundamental the assumptions the harder they are to see. I also believe that the highest calling of the human mind is to know itself in order to free itself from bias, to see the world more clearly and to understand it better."

Wow! Great answer! What a refreshing response. Thanks for making a serious answer to that interesting question. (I couldn't tell if anyone acknowledged your answer to the question posed about what we belief "just because", so I figured I'd chime in -- even if I don't think I agree with all of it).

I've found many girls. Most of them break up with me because I don't wanna get married. Marriage isn't the pinnacle of happiness. I've never understood that. On the other hand congratulations on your anniversary.

I was in a hurry. Why don't you become an English teacher? You've got a grasp for proper English. It pays good, and you get the Summer off

Actually, the pay is terrible. Here in Austin, an English teacher with ten years' experience gets paid less than $30,000 per year.

Anyone who goes into teaching for the money is an idiot. And anyone who goes into teaching for the summers off is going to get paid like someone who works nine months out of the year.

This is in no way to be read as a defamation of teachers. It's a noble profession, a true calling for some, and it's a damned shame that we don't respect good teachers as much as we do good football players, and pay them accordingly.

In my experience people from both the left and the centre see obama as being in the political centre/centre-left.

Interesting that people on the (far?) right consider themselves such an authority on their opposite end of the political spectrum. Do you know something we don't Jong? Or is it that the political school of thought you subscribe to has its own special lens to see obama through...?

Good, so instead of taking responsibility for our coercive interrogation techniques we’ll send people to countries that will do far, far worse, or we will use those techniques ourselves since there is no oversight. I’m not sure how much we will actually withdrawal from Iraq, but the best that can be said about that is that Bush’s Surge worked and Obama can’t take any responsibility for that. So now we will look the other way when Cuba commits atrocious human rights violations. And we have a president whose only claim to fame is that he has mastered a flowery, feel-good politically correct way of telling people what they want to hear. And then there’s Gitmo, which if it actually is closed will mean either releasing extremely dangerous terrorists to continue acts of terrorism or holding them in places where there will be far less accountability for their treatment.

Why is something the matter? Isn’t it possible that I had to go to work? Or I spent time with the girls? Or even staring at the wall would probably be a better use of my time then responding to your posts. There are all kinds of reasons why I wouldn't jump to respond to your posts just because you post them, not the least of which is that your opinion isn’t that important. In fact, you should be kissing my ass right now because I thought enough of you to tell you off.

Under Bush we did our own dirty work. We could regulate it; assure that methods that were more humane and more effective were used. We were moving towards a more open policy and finally moving towards legally defining what is acceptable and what is not. Under Obama, all that is lost. There will be no accountability, which means the Egyptians will do our dirty work for us or clandestine unofficial CIA teams will act with no guidance from the state. There will be no further discussion on the matter, because we’ll wash our hands and pretend we aren’t standing knee deep in mud.

My problem with that is that any technique that an administration wants to use can be certified as effective, safe & legal in that way, no matter if it is or isn't.

Is this your fortune-teller side speaking, or do you have an inside top guy at Langley that vows never to stop torturing as long as he is still breathing?
How can you say with certainty that this HAS to be the case?

I don’t worship Obama like you do. I’m not naïve enough to simply say that because Obama is in office the second coming has occurred. You seem to think the whole world has changed, it has not. It’s the same one it was when Bush was in office.

Like Sarge said, I really like the facelift, but that's all I'm seeing so far. I don't worship him, but after Bush & Cheney, almost anyone would seem great.

Sadly, I agree.
I'm just hoping that Obama is ready for a little tussle here & there to enforce his no-torture sentiments. We'll see.

Less than $30,000 after 10 years? In Austin that could barely keep you afloat. That's horrible.
10 years experience in Grand Rapids will earn you about $38,000. Not bad at all.

OPPYH, I have to issue a retraction, and an apology. My figures were off, and not by a just a little! Here's the latest figures (2007 were the most recent I could find):

Quote:

TEXAS RANKS 29TH IN THE NATION FOR TEACHER PAY

Texas ranked 29th in the nation for its average teacher salary in 2006-07, according to the American Federation of Teachers' (AFT) Survey and Analysis of Teacher Salary Trends 2007.

The average teacher salary in Texas for teh 2006-07 school year was $45,392. Texas was ranked 10th in the nation for beginning teacher salaries at $38,522.

Sorry about that. My bad for listening to my sister-in-law, the math teacher!

But apparently, Austin doesn't pay well for ANY teachers, since the university churns out so many of them. And because so many of them want to stay here, it tends to depress wages, while at the same time INCREASING the cost of living. In most recent comparisons I've seen, Austin's cost of living ranks almost dead even with San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle - none of which are exactly known for being cheap places to live.

As I've said, I work in a warehouse where I can wear pretty much whatever I want, I can sing, talk to myself if I want, curse, burp, fart, or what have you, and I make more than most teachers here. And I don't have to put up with anyone's kids!

Does that seem right to you?

Oh, and sorry again about passing on bad info.

Mike
