LOL

Sorry. Couldn't resist. I just don't like the guy.

But really, this does not surprise me in the least. He's been voting and supporting the Democratic agenda seemingly for some time now, so just switch and get it over with already.

What stands out to me, however are these two sections of the article:
Quote:

"I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans," Specter said in a statement posted on a Web site devoted to Pennsylvania politics and confirmed by his office.

and
Quote:

Asked by a reporter what he had to say to his constituents, Specter replied with a smile, "I don't have to say anything to them. They said it to me."

I'm sorry, but this just seems arrogant to me. He claims he made the switch due to HIS personal philosophy, but then says he owes no one an explanation (least of all those who supported him all these years in the GOP) because his constituents told him to switch. Huh? What? I mean, that IS essentially what he's saying there. The statement boils down to "I am beholden to no one." Uh . . . excuse me, Mr. Specter, but you ARE. You are beholden to the folks that put you in office in the first place. If his supporters are truly behind him, then I say go for it. But as his campaigns were funded primarily by Republicans and the Pennsylvania GOP, then he's got some 'splainin' to do.

Those with more information than me on this, please enlighten as usual, but this seems like a standard political ploy to keep his job 'cause he REALLY knows that the GOP is gettin' sick and tired of his antics.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

So your belief is that people don't support the candidate, but rather his party? In other words, when you vote, you're not voting for THE MAN and his ideas, you're voting for THE PARTY and ITS ideas. Is that how I'm reading you, Rip?

I figure if the majority of Specter's state went Democratic, he's reacting to their shift in party, and trying to best represent THEIR interests.

Believe it or not, I *HAVE* lived through this sort of thing before. Phil Gramm used to be a Democrat. After the Reagan Revolution, in 1983, he switched parties and became a Reagan Republican. He finished out his term in the House, and then got elected to the U.S. Senate as a Republican.

Was he a traitor, or a patriot? I suppose the answer to that probably has a lot to do with how you identify your own party affiliation.

What's got me MOST worried about Specter is the spectre (pardon the pun) of a filibuster-proof Senate. Scary stuff, no matter which side of the aisle you're on. I *DETEST* rubber-stamp Congresses no matter whose agenda their rubber-stamping! And with Franken's victory all but assured, Specter would make the magic 60 for the Dems. With a rock-solid majority in the House already, and a Democrat in the White House, this sets the stage for all kinds of abuse of power, the likes of which we haven't seen in... well, in about three years, to be honest.

I guess what I was basically saying is the WAY he switched. The words he used just struck me as being very pompous and arrogant. You're either switching because of your own personal beleifs or because you felt a change in the wind and are going to save your rear end politically. I just don't see how you can have it both ways and he's trying to do just that. So it would seem. Does that make sense? I know that party switching goes on. That much is obvious. People change, ideals change, but very rarely do I think that people change soley on the fact that the majority of the constituents in their district are now of the other party (in other words, they actually admit to making the move on a political basis rather than a personal one). That shows weakness of character in my opinion. But that's just me.

I don't see him as a traitor OR a patriot, to be honest. I see him as someone trying to save his own butt come next election. But, then again, he could also serve as a prime example of why Senators and Representatives need to have set term limits.

If he were just to explain WHY he was switching (i.e. - my basic, personal beliefs have changed over time to the point where they don't gel with the GOP, blah, blah blah) and leave it at that - and wait until his term was over to announce it - THEN run again as a democrat, I wouldn't be having such a problem with it. I admit that's a perfect world scenario, but I'll also say that's how ANYONE should do it. I have a problem with him riding the GOP tailcoats and using GOP funds to get across his agenda which I don't THINK (and I'll admit I could be wrong here) gelled with the people who supported him because he was a Republican.

A lot of times people support a person BECAUSE of his party. I'll go out on a dangerous limb here and say that goes for Obama. He's a smooth talking, good looking guy with very little experience, but he was a Democrat so he was wildy popular and got people out to vote. I read and heard a few things about his supporters not really knowing much about HIM, but were voting for the generalization of Change that he embodied.

The filibuster-proof Senate scares me as well. That should NEVER happen and why that was ever allowed is beyond me. But watching Franken explode now and then (as he is wont to do) will at least make it mildly entertaining from time to time. He'll act pompous for a while, but when the winds of change . . . . change, he won't be able to contain himself. He can be funny sometimes, but MAN he's a jerk when it comes to politics.

With RINOs Specter, Snowe, and Collins, the Dems already had it. I say good riddance to him, and hopefully the others will follow him over to Harry Reid's camp as well. At least we can start clean to re-build a badly-broken Party. I wonder how Arlen reconciles the fact that he begged, fucking begged W to campaign for him in 2004 when his election was going to be close. Bush delivered, Specter won, and then the un-grateful bastard screwed Bush every chance he got afterwards. Hopefully, there is a final judgement someday, and I hope he's a goin' south, way south.

This strikes me as funny:

Not necessarily. They'd just have a different choice to make. Same way we have to make every 4 to 8 years with the Presidency. I'd be more in favor of limits on consecutive term limits. Give some other schmo a chance after the the first term limit, but they can run again later. I just think that they really do lose touch with reality being in Washington that long.

Personally, I'm more in favor of a parliamentary system. You serve as long as your constituents want you there. But you'd better be on your toes - you can be voted out at any time !

If you get the idea that I'm pissed off at how the current system is gamed - say ANYTHING to get elected, do what you want during your term, and get on the PR stick the last 6 months (maybe 8) - you'd be right.

I do believe you carried the day on that one. Seems no matter how I try, I can't seem to shake Reid & Pelosi.

You sure you won't reconsider? I can throw in free rustproofing and undercoating. I'll talk to my sales manager and see if he'll agree to throw in floormats as well.

What's it going to take to put you into a new Senator and Representative today?

:P

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The way term limits work here, once you get termed out of the city council you move on to the state legislature or to county supervisor, and if you've gotten termed out of everything else you move on to Congress. Or sometimes vice versa.

Not sure how much "reality" that enforces, altho i DO have to say that in our lab we rotate people every three-four years.

We should have strapped him into a glider, filled it nose heavy w/ explosives, and dropped his Allah lovin' ass into a large, empty field. After which, release wild boars into the area so they could make good use of his remains. Now THAT's justice.- rappy

Yeah, that's what Sheikh Issa said. Seems you both have a lot in common.- signy

If PA voters have a clue, I will be laughing so hard when PA finally gets a conservative GOP candidate and Spectre gets whipped in the primary (as a Dem) - if he even bothers to run.

Nice pic, but no mention of the pic of Charles Harrelson (assasin and CIA employee/contractor) as one of the three tramps with new shoes captured in the rail yard.
