My biggest problem with them is that they're UGLY. $540 for those ugly-ass kicks? Yikes. No accounting for taste, I guess.

And where exactly is one supposed to wear $540 sneakers? I mean, anywhere you're going to wear fancy, expensive shoes, you're NOT going to wear sneaks, right?

'Course, I'm a man, so I don't get Manolo Blahniks or Jimmy Choos either... If she wants to spend her money on 'em, who am I to complain?

Or were they bought for her by the Democratic party?

Questions of taste aside -

What do you think Drudge would be ranting about if she showed up in $10.00 Shoes4Less sneakers ? Do you think the braying right would complain that she was disrespecting the occassion the same way her husband did with his 'tacky' gifts to the queen ?

Isn't this just another blatant partisan shot at putting the Obamas in a no-win situation ? Too cheap ! Too luxe ! Too casual ! Too formal ! Smearing them no matter what they do until SOMETHING resonates ?

10 $ shoes would certainly fit the moment a whole lot better than those ugly ass " let them eat cake " shoes. Cheap comfortable shoes would reflect a more sensible, dare I say sensitive to the needs of the poor attitude.

Giving cheap, tacky presents, on par w/ a box set of DVDs would be more appropriate here than to the P.M. of England.

Wait Rap ! Michelle Obama made $273,000 a year as head of community relations for Chicago University hospitals. Are you saying she SHOULDN'T be entitled to enjoy the fruits of her success in this free-market system ? Or that because she's black and female she's supposed to be humble ? Are you saying she's supposed to be SOCIALIST ?! Or is your point that as a new member of the PC police you're charing her with a violation of not being PC ?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

This was not a 'let them eat cake' moment. The outrage of a 'let them eat cake' scenario evaporates when the queen is actually handing out cake for people to eat.

Essentially, the argument seems to be that Mrs. Obama should have put on a costume in order to attend this charity event. That she should have pretended to be poor while amongst the poor people. This insults the intelligence of poor people.

Everyone knows she's loaded. Burlap sacks and payless shoes would be nothing more than a Holloween costume out of season. Nobody seems to focus on the important part, that she was contributing her personality and time to a charity.

Good point, Rue - *I* wouldn't buy those shoes, for any price, but I don't begrudge her her right to buy them. She's an American, right? I guess Democrats aren't allowed to enjoy the fruits of a free-market system and buy senseless shit once in a while...

I wouldn't buy a Ferrari, either, but I don't begrudge anyone who's got the scratch to do so.

Hell, maybe Barack bought 'em for her for an early Mother's Day present.

I'll be pissed if it turns out the Democratic Party paid for 'em, though. Especially if they're part of a $150,000-plus shopping spree they sent her on!

I'm just sayin' she should know her audience. Feeding the poor ? Don't rub their faces in how much $$ she has to waste on gawd awful ugly shoes, which cost about as much as they probably spent on food for the entire YEAR.

Imagine the outrage and comparisons to Marie Antoinette if Laura Bush showed up at such a function wearing some expensive piece of jewelry. Oh, how the comedians would run w/ THAT one.

According to Salary.com:

Quote:

The median expected salary for a typical Community Relations Manager in the United States is $81,551. This basic market pricing report was prepared using our Certified Compensation Professionals' analysis of survey data collected from thousands of HR departments at employers of all sizes, industries and geographies.

I'd guess being head of community relations for Chicago University hospitals might pay a bit more, even if you're not a Senator's wife. Being a Senator's wife probably can't HURT your salary, though...

Zit, the lady paid for the shoes with her own dosh, ergo I got no issue with it whatever - no more than I had with Piper Palin lugging one of her moms ultra expensive handbags cause Sarah paid for that with *her* own cash.

As long as the person wearin it paid for it out of their own pocket I couldn't give a damn what they wear, or (in the case of super baggy pants) how it might look - people gotta right to make their own fashion choices with their own wallet.

I'll even back it up despite thinking it ridiculous, as I *have* around here versus a certain Dick (pun intended) up in Flint and his little legal tantrum against baggy pants, which is in fact a VERY thinly veiled racial attack - I went so far as to refuse service to one of his off-duty officers because "his pants conformed to his body in a manner I found offensive" complete with official letter to the department after his supervisor got verbally abusive to our dispatcher about it.

So long as you paid for it, what you wear is your RIGHT, and I'll stand behind it no matter what, even if I do think ya look like a damn circus clown.

This is no different, Lady paid for the shoes, they're HER shoes and she's welcome to wear em, end of story - far as I am concerned about it.

She paid for them out of her own pocket, good. But if Nancy Reagan had done the exact same thing she likely (I said likely not definatley) would have gotten flack from the pundits. Plus she could've bought a pair of "Converse" sneakers that ar'nt ugly and paid less then $50. I have a pair of "PUMA" sneakers (forgot what I paid, not $540) that have lasted for years, I bet she would'nt wear them in the rain, I bet they'd fall apart

You find it thoughtless that Michelle Obama went to volunteer at a food bank, because of what shoes she wore? You find her to not be "caring, heartfelt, and aware" because of her shoes, NOT because of her volunteering in the first place. Is that right? You care more about what she wears and how she looks than about what she's doing to help the poor. Is that your point? You base someone's ability to be "heartfelt" and "caring" entirely on what they wear? You care less about her actions and more about her wardrobe? Is that your point?

Oddly, I think you'd have far less of a problem with this if it were Miss California, and she wore a diamond-studded tiara to hand out food to the homeless. Then you'd be glad she put their needs first, and looked great doing it. Right?

So your ENTIRE problem with this isn't the shoes or the clothes - it's Michelle Obama. You hate what she did, not because of what she DID, but because of what SHE did.

Please, don't waste my time trying to explain your position. I think we all see quite clearly what your position is, even if you don't.

Which part, the handing out food to the poor, or wearing sneakers to do it? Or is it the $540? Would it be okay if she were wearing a $540 wedding ring while she handed out food to the poor? Bear with me; I'm just trying to gauge what and where your "outrage thresholds" are.

Which part, the handing out food to the poor, or wearing sneakers to do it? Or is it the $540? Would it be okay if she were wearing a $540 wedding ring while she handed out food to the poor? Bear with me; I'm just trying to gauge what and where your "outrage thresholds" are.

#3 Scion's are ugly.

So you say. They're not high on my wish-list, either. I do find the early xB terribly cute, though, in a cuddly-tech, utilitarian way. Let's just say it's cuter than a $540 pair of sneaks!

Wearing ugly $540 sneaker to a food bank is just REALLY bad PR, it makes the little guy say; Oh thank you for desending from the clouds and giving us our Government Cheese hand outs.

As for the Scion, I have'nt heard about them being crap. I have'nt heard about recalls or them being unreliable etc. I thing they look like somthing a Kindergardener would draw.

Then by that rationale, it's not what she's wearing that grinds your gears, but rather that she deigns to come out of her mansion at all. After all, before she "descends from the clouds to give out government cheese", she has to emerge from the White House first, right?

So since she can't even leave the house without seeming at least a little bit above us mere mortals, she probably shouldn't even TRY to help out or cast publicity on the needy, right?

Nope, haven't heard anything bad about them. One friend of mine has an '04 xB, and he just loves it. He ditched his '98 Dodge Ram for it, and has never regretted that. A girl at work drives a supercharged TC, and she's crazy about it.

The xB pictured above is really the only Scion that does anything for me. The TC looks oddly-proportioned to me; its "greenhouse" - the roof and windows - looks like it was designed for a larger car, and doesn't really integrate with the body of the car. And the new xB just looks like it was designed by several different committees, each working on different areas; one on the front, one on the back, another on the middle, etc. The xA and xD just look like transportation pods to me.

But to each their own. Some people actually bought Pontiac Azteks and Chevy Avalanches, so there's no accounting for taste. In fact, the Avalanche did so well that Honda modeled their first "full-size" truck after it - the Ridgeline. Or as I call it, the Ridge-a-Lanche. It's a Honda even a Honda geek like me couldn't love...

kwickie,

Now you're just running around in circles, straining all bounds of credulity, as you try to turn this around to something it's not, and stick up for Michelle. She is what she is, and her shoes tell the whole story here. Spin all you want, but you have nothing.

Did Nancy Reagan ever show up at a food bank wearing Oscar de la Renta gear?

That'd be no

You have no case. (again)

I'm simply asking questions, trying to get answers, like Signy does. Does this make you uncomfortable? You claim I'm running around in circles trying to stick up for Michelle. Have you not read anything I've posted in this thread?

YOU are the one here claiming that you can tell everything about the woman by the shoes she's wearing. I'm asking why you think that. And do you think that about others, or only Mrs. Obama?

It's your apparent position that what a person wears is more important than what they do. I'm trying to figure out why.

You seem to be getting quite dizzy from trying to spin your position into something credible, and from trying to make a metaphorical sow's ear from a silk purse.

I take food and clothing to some of the homeless in my area. I give them my old shoes when I buy new ones. Am I rubbing their nose in it and trying to show them up because I have new shoes that are nicer than the ones I'm giving away? Should I stop helping them, because they might not appreciate someone "rich" showing off how superior they are? Or are they just grateful that I give them something without forcing them to sit through a sermon?

Let me get this straight, though, so we don't have any confusion between us. Is it your belief that wearing very expensive designer clothes is not shameful in and of itself? If so, I can only conclude that your problem with Michelle is that she tried to help out at a food bank. Do you not want people to volunteer to help the needy?

Seriously, I'm just trying to clarify what exactly your problem with this is. You certainly seem to have an issue with it.

FREMDFIRMA

Hey now, don't bag on Government cheese - it's a time honored tradition dating back to 1837!

http://www.whitehousehistory.org/04/subs_pph/PresidentDetail.aspx?ID=7
&imageID=1303

" A New York dairy farmer sent President Jackson an interesting gift: a 1,400-pound cheese. Jackson left it in the Entrance Hall of the White House to age for two years. In 1837 the President invited the public to come and eat it. The cheese was gone in two hours, but the stain and smell in the Entrance Hall lasted for a long while."

Ironically, it's also explosive - one summer in indiana the heat and pressure caused in a storage room that wasn't temperature controlled caused a stockpile of it to explode wiped out part of the building.

All my shoes, total for what I payed for them, cost less than Michelle's "sneakers". Dress, casual, work boot, running, and various Croc type footwear all added up, I have about a dozen pair. For the amount of $ her shoes cost, I could buy all new shoes and have enough left over to take 20+ homeless folk to Wendy's for a full meal, and a Frosty.

Yes - always TOO something, absolutely - it's so obvious they have nothing, I think most intelligent people see through it.
She's helping out at a foodbank but they have to talk about her shoes. So very petty - go to Texas and secede already.

Been watching F*x news lately - the desperation is so amusing. Today it was Whatif day (again): "What if John Edwards hadn't been caught cheating until AFTER the election and what if he was the VP?? Wouldn't Obama be in trouble then?!"
I'm not making it up.

RIPWASH

Michelle Obama volunteered to help the homeless and the hungry for which I give her kudos.

I don't have a huge problem with the shoes only in that she should have thought that wearing something that pricey was not in the best taste considering the occasion? Is it possible she didn't know how much they cost? Sure. And I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt there. Heck I'm even willing to bet the people she served didn't even notice the shoes or knew how much they cost themselves.

Kwicko, I also applaud you helping those in need. I wish I could do more myself. We donate gently used clothes to Good Will and Salvation Army outlets. I only know that when my shoes are old . . . they're worn out and done. Not much use to anyone. I imagine you buy sensible shoes, though, and not $540 ones. Myself? I get the cheapo brand at WalMart. $10-20 a pair is all I can bring myself to spend on something that I seem to tear through in a matter of months. Once or twice in the last few years I splurged on $40 shoes, but that was about it. LOL

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

She does what? Takes the homeless to lunch on her own dime?the hell she does! Or didn't that time, at least. I help the homeless by NOT BEING ONE myself.

The lack of true compassion on the Left never ceases to amaze.
