America loves a winner!

While many in official Washington were recovering from Saturday evening’s White House Correspondents Association dinner — where President Barack Obama got off some memorable one-liners and comedian Wanda Sykes took aim at radio talk jock Rush Limbaugh, among others — Cheney gave a lengthy interview to “Face the Nation” on CBS television. The replay of clips from that chat were still reverberating on Monday’s morning shows on CNN, NBC and ABC.

On waterboarding terror suspects, which critics say doesn’t work in getting useful information — aside from it being torture — Cheney disagreed. “Khalid Shaikh Mohammed … an evil, evil man that’s been in our custody since March of ‘03 … did not cooperate fully in terms of interrogations until after waterboarding. Once we went through that process, he produced vast quantities of invaluable information about Al Qaeda.”

Any regrets about his time in the White House? “No regrets. I think it was absolutely the right thing to do. I’m convinced, absolutely convinced, that we saved thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives.”

What about the detention center at Guantanamo, which Obama has said will be closed within a year? “We had to have a place, a facility, where we could capture these people and hold them until they were no longer a danger to the United States … we released hundreds already of the less threatening types. About 12 percent of them, nonetheless, went back onto the fight as terrorists. The group that’s left, the 245 or so, these are the worst of the worst.”

And what about Cheney’s Republican Party, now dealing with the defection of high-profile Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania? Should it move to the left to broaden its appeal to voters? “We are what we are. We’re Republicans … I think we win elections when we have good solid conservative principles to run upon and base our policies on those principles.”

If he had to choose between Rush Limbaugh and Colin Powell — the former Secretary of State and former head of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff — Cheney said he’d pick Limbaugh.

Well, if I had to choose in terms of being a Republican, I’d go with Rush Limbaugh, I think.

I think my take on it was Colin had already left the party. I didn’t know he was still a Republican.”

BOUT DAMN TIME, DON'T YA THINK??? Way to go Cheney !!

So for all your vociferous arguing that Rush is NOT the de facto GOP leader, NOW you're coming about and admitting that he is?

Color me not surprised in the least. I guess you just had to wait for the official okay from Rush or Cheney before you could say it out loud.

No, Dick Cheney was talking about Saddam, and his connection w/ 9/11. He slipped and said 'Osama' instead of 'Saddam'. Actually he had some less than polite words for shitheads like you, Rappy.

"If an Indian injures me, does it follow that I may revenge that Injury on all Indians? It is well known that Indians are of different Tribes, Nations and Languages, as well as the White People. In Europe, if the French, who are White People, should injure the Dutch, are they to revenge it on the English, because they too are White People? The only Crime of these poor Wretches seems to have been, that they had a reddish brown Skin, and black Hair; and some People of that Sort, it seems, had murdered some of our Relations. If it be right to kill Men for such a Reason, then, should any Man, with a freckled Face and red Hair, kill a Wife or Child of mine, it would be right for me to revenge it, by killing all the freckled red-haired Men, Women and Children, I could afterwards any where meet with."

I agree with jew Cheney, we should arrest Cheney, Bush and their gang of gangsters, waterboard them 6 times every day until they confess to 9/11, sentence them by martial law tribunal, then hang them until their heads pop off. Then do the same to every traitor who supported them.

I'd buy that for a dollar.

Sorry Frem, Ben's words don't apply to me. Back in the day, we took care of those who would attack us, and we didn't fret or whine about it like you pansies are doing today.

What's amazing is that, even after 9/11, slugs like you still try to paint the U.S. as the bad guy here, even after all those innocent people were killed.

Not assigning any roles here. But. Being terribly, terribly wronged does not necessarily justify all actions before or after being wronged.

If the Republican Party has any hopes of making any sort of "comeback", it must dis-associate from Cheney once and for all. Ideology aside, Cheney represents negative imagery for women, minorities, and everyone else who's not a Limbaugh lemming. I really don't like Colin Powell or John McCain's daughter that much, but there is truth to their messages. Republicans have to embrace the "middle", or even a bit left of the middle if they ever want to win elections again. The number one priority of any political party is to win, and taking hard-line Conservative positions will not win a general election. It's not 1980,there simply are not the demographics any more to support that traditional platform. Guys like Cheney and Limbaugh are living in the past...pre-cable, pre-internet, pre-gay rights, pre-illegal Mexican, pre-McCain, and it shows. All Cheney does is send people screaming out of the room. The necessity and results of waterboarding and harsh interrogation can and will be debated for a long time, but in the mean time, Republicans are not gaining ANY poll points by throwing Cheney and Limbaugh out to the public for explanations of actions and positions. To me it just looks like the same old shit that has cost us the last two elections, and it's a little too late for these pathetic public-image mea culpa therapy sessions.

Speaking of being a internet loud mouth, you're the one making asinine claims of waterboarding Cheney or me, simply for wanting to do the right thing. Another 9/11 was averted, maybe more than one,and you are off on some ridiculous politically motivated pissing contest over what is or isn't " torture ". I'd be funny if 3000 lives were snuffed out one day in Sept.

Speaking of making no sense whatsoever...

It's funny to watch your delusions grow, in a sad kind of way. You've gone from "we might have gotten info" to "we got actionable intel" to "we prevented another attack" to "another 9/11 was averted" - and you've never provided ANY evidence to back up any single one of those claims. It's like you have to keep increasing the size of the lie, because people keep calling you on your lies.

As for that other thing, I don't know why you're laughing about 3000 people being killed, but apparently YOU find it funny. Maybe. It's impossible to figure out what the hell you "clearly" mean by that statement.

As for Cheney and releasing all or none of the memos, life's a bitch, ain't it? I seem to recall a time when Dickless was out in front, defending the right of the President to classify or de-classify intel as he saw fit, and then putting it all down to executive privilege. But I guess now he's in favor of curbing that power, since he know longer has it.

Thanks for that, Jong. I once again find myself agreeing with you.

The GOP could do a whole hell of a lot worse than Colin Powell, yet some here want to toss him aside as a "liberal". Well, if that's the case, I'm sure the left would be glad to have him.

As for lining up behind the likes of Cheney and Limbaugh, what can I say? It's just what we hoped they would do, and they've played right into it.

Jong,

If the GOP is going to survive, it'll have to go far, FAR further toward the right. Reaching out to the middle and trying to fill the vacuum left by the Dems, who have lurched far FAR to the Left isn't the answer.

John McCain showed that.

I could not disagree more. Who ya gonna get way out there on the right? A few John Birchers, or perhaps the Grand Wizard of the KKK? Look around dude, America is full of people who will never embrace hard-core Right policies. Students, Blacks, Gays, Hispanics...Like it or not, that's the American Demographic now. McCain lost not because he was not a "true" Conservative, he lost because he was a lousy campaigner. He lost because he had no clear message. He couldn't raise any money. He waffled, his obsession with being a like-me whore put him in the worst possible media spotlights. He was awful, just dismal, during the debates, the ONE time he had chances to outshine Obama without his teleprompter, and he blew it big time. And then McCain's stunt of flying back to DC to address the financial crisis was another opportunity blown due to McCain's self-destructive-by-stupidity personna.

So don't give me this McCain/liberal thing as an excuse for Republicans to EVEN FURTHER crawl back into their turtle-shell of core Right-wing ideology, 'cause I'm not buying it. Neither will the American voters.

Last Election :

Some interesting facts concerning the 2008 Presidential election:

Number of States won by: Democrats: 21 - Republicans: 29
Square miles of land won by: Democrats: 580,000 - Republicans: 2,427,000
Population of counties won by: Democrats: 127 million - Republicans: 143 million
Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by: Democrats: 13.2 - Republicans: 2.1

"In aggregate, the map of the territory Republicans won was mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country. Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in government-owned tenements and living off various forms of government welfare..."
AND Obama is only creating more OF THESE DEPENDENT people to vote in perpetual necessity for Liberals.

Republicans already have the voter support of the traditional base. We need some of those minorities, and Gays, and old Reagan Democrats back to win anything. And maybe get even some from Academia and the Media on our side as well. But to do that the Party has to change, open up to all types, and find a way to articulate sound, yet popular positions.

Last time I checked, square miles don't vote.

If the GOP doesn't get a grip on ILLEGAL immigration, excessive spending by the Federal Gov't, and a few other key issues, then this country will be lost, forever.

Don't count on that any time soon. GOP/Bush had 8 years to do something about illegal immigration. After 911, with full support of all, they did nothing. Ooops, I forgot the McCain/Kennedy plan, supported by Bush, but which was abhorred by everyone else and easily defeated. I support a huge effort to reach out to Hispanics, who voted for Bush much more than they did for McCain. We lost their votes, we lost the Moderates, and fell to miniscule numbers of Blacks. Seems like the only one McCain had any appeal to was Sean Hannity, and all his bloviating didn't do squat for the election. Maybe the fact that he regularly trashed McCain prior to the nomination, came off as a bit hypocritical to fair-minded people. Also, isn't it about time that the retarded Republicans learn how to deal with the hostile Press? For 8 years they just sat there like crusted dung on your farm boots, barely ever challenging the dishonest media, rarely ever defending their President in the face of daily vicous attacks, ie, a complete abandonment of the leader of their Party. Now they are ALL so fucking marginalized, demeaned, and demonized, you tell me how they come back? How do you re-build a public image so destroyed? How? Who? What forum? What newspaper? What major network? Don't say Fox...'aint nearly enough to do the job. Also, maybe, just maybe, the next VP choice should be vetted a tad to make sure there are no videos out there of her with faith-healing snake charming nutjobs. And a basic, 9th grade knowledge of the world might be helpful as well for a VP candidate.

While I would agree that th GOP lost some of those votes, I don't think the solution is to go running after them. That shows no backbone. The key, IMHO, would be to lure them back by admitting past mistakes(if any ), apologize for losing touch, making the CORE principals of the party more alluring and sticking by them.

I've heard it said that politics is like a pendulum and the last election was a great depiction of this. Bush and Co. "stayed the course" to such a degree that it upset a lot of people. They were pushing that pendulum and holding it to the right. Election time came and the pendulum swung pretty far left (Obama campaigned as a centrist, but let's face it . . . he's not). If Obama and the Dems keep pushing the Pendulum farther to the left, sooner or later it's going to swing back to the right and swing back pretty hard.

Mal: You think she'll hold together?
Zoë: She's torn up plenty, but she'll fly true.
Mal: Could be bumpy.
Zoë: Always is

OK, BUT who's gonna even know that? WHo's gonna know if the ecomony gets worse? WHo's gonna know about all the debt and wasteful liberal spending? You think the Media is gonna tell folks that? They have their script, and they're stickin' to it.
