Buzzing hikers. Sounds like a jet. "Pull up pull up!" Spooky! Yeah, don't look like much lift down in the canyon. I wonder what their max speed was to carry them through? Very unnatural looking. Freaky to have to take the wings off your airplane before and after each flight.

Germany built gliders and trained all their military pilots after WW1, because they were prohibited from building engined aircraft. So the German companies are world leaders in glider tech. It's like the Japs building motocycles while rebuilding their military industrial complex after WW2.

If you haven't flown in a glider, you need to do it. Reduces fear of an engine failure.

I used to bum free rides at RAF Bicester glider club in England. No ridges, just thermals. Biggest danger was hitting the other 30 gliders in the area. Lots of military jet pilots did it to improve their skills, and taught their whole family. Some of the family gliders were gigantic monstrocities that looked like WW2 seaplanes.

Best part of flying is no stinkin speed limits. On my local scanner cops just chased and arrested a sportbiker for speeding, and are chasing another one. Did the same last week when I was out riding the Dragon. But the drunken criminal biker gangs on Harleys are left alone to do their crimes, hanging out with cops, crashing into sportbikers headon (5 such crashes last week).

The v-tailed bird in PN's "Soul Flyers" is an H101 Salto , which is also flown by my airshow friend , Manfred Radius .

Manfred is the Yoda of glider acro . I was fortunate to arrange to crew for him at a show , and my friend Buckley flew the towplane...

I'd like to have a Salto , but it only accepts small and light pilots for acro , so there be no point...

The T-tailed bird in PN's 'Ribbon Cut' video is
a Pilatus B4 . It's been out of production a long time now , but I used to lust after it when I was in Primary flight training .

Pilatus is a Swiss company that builds very fine flying machines , including the turbine Porter that happens to be one of the world's greatest bush aircraft . Downey, Jr. and Mel Gibson made it sorta famous in 'Air America'. Actual x-cia birds were acquired from a Thai scrapyard and cobbled back together for the film .

The 'Swiss of Eastern Europe' , the Czechs , build some fine gliders like the Blanik L-13 and the L-23 Super Blanik . This is the same aircraft industry that produced the combloc trainers L-29 Delfin and L-39 Albatros .

The L-13 Blanik flies just like a jet , which is appropriate since a lot of Mig-21 pilots began their flying careers in this glider .

Very fascinating, O2B.

My flight experience is limited to single and dual engine ultralites since I have utterly no "official" qualifications - and US legal ultralights are basically an overweight, underpowered airframe with 1-2 engines on it.

The FAA deliberately sets up the regs to make them very unsafe (you can be fined for building in excess/emergency capacity) so that the inevitable wrecks then "justify" their insanely exploitative schedule of fees, permits and other administrative bullshit in the name of "safety" (Read: Profit) despite the fact that required "safety" equipment has caused so many overloads and crashes, and puts most aircraft (and soon, cars - look how expensive that shit is makin em?) out of the financial reach of most ordinary folk.

Seriously though, it takes some heavy brass ones to fly an ultralite, and more than a little skill in both powered and unpowered operation & concepts.

Although too old for it anymore, I've flown everything from a glider wing powered by a pair of chainsaw engines to the GT400 series, and one of my reasons for preferring 2stroke engines as a whole is that anything else is too goddamn heavy to power one, you see.

Any nitwit can fly a plane, any nitwit can land a plane - it's only once you have landed the SAME plane, twice, that you're a pilot.


You can do some wacky things with ultralites too, if you know how, one of which involves turning the thing into a stiff wind and performing a STOL launch, or using a trick made famous by the Fiesler Fi 156 Storch, and using a headwind to make a feather-drop in-place landing.

A vintage poster at the flight school here in Knoxville posted teh requirements for getting a pilot license in the 1920s: (1) start motor, (2) take off into the wind, (3) circle the airfield, (4) land without crashing.

Now its almost so complicated only a robot can get a license. Unless you fly gliders or ultralights.

I've ridden a couple of flights in trike ultralights. Felt like riding a motorcycle at 100,000 feet.

Ultralights are a growth industry, with the cost of a new aircraft less than a new car, and no license nor vihicle registration required. Free fligth training is available, but not required.

Ayep, O2B - that's yer basic "easy-riser" airframe, sans engines.

Gimme two chainsaws and about four hours in my shop and you wont need a truck to launch it no more.


One of the coolest things about most ultralite models is that if you suffer engine failure, run out of gas or what have you, you can still deadstick it like a glider, which is basically what it is, a glider with a lil engine or two on it.

Funny this topic pops back up today - I had to run outta here early this morning to fix some nimrods engine mounts...

The dumbass didn't have enough runway, so him and his brother in law decided to try using his truck and some rope in combination with the engines to try and short launch it (almost WITHOUT A DOUBT preceeded by "Hey Y'all, watch this!") and unfortunately his brother in law with the truck was too busy looking BEHIND HIM, to notice that he'd drifted off the path and was headed for a small but substantive tree...

And is now nursing a serious case of whiplash and a knot on his noggin the size of a golfball.
Which doesn't piss him off half as bad as bashing up the front of the shiny new truck his wife was pissed enough about him buyin to begin with.

And somehow, the airframe wound up going nosefirst into the turf, prolly due to the OTHER idiot panicking and driving the stick forward while the tail was just starting to lift, although with this particular pair of morons I'd just about believe anything up to and including the ghost of charles darwin throwing lightning bolts at them.

The airframe is undamaged, but imma need to pull the props off and clean the dirt outta the motors if any got in there - but mostly the engine mounts need replacement and realignment cause one of em is quite clearly bent, and imma get around to that when I damn well please.

And that's gonna be a while, cause their wives showed up at the local scratch and dent clinic and they were NOT HAPPY, you could almost hear the Gotterdammerung, Act 3 backgrounding them - and since their husbands are off-limits, so far as that whole dismemberment thing goes, and I happen to be the crazy old man who sold em their stupid little airplane - exit, stage left, and quickly.

And imma stay the hell AWAY from that, for a good long while - they can pick the damn thing up when I get finished, cause damned if I trust them morons to tie their own shoes, much less bolt the mount assemblies back on correctly.

And yes, I think it's funny too - but damned if I want either the harpies those dorks married getting in range to claw my eyes out, mind you.

I saw that JYW epp after I got back from Bend Oregon, building a $700,000 Lancair jetprop out of plastic. 50% has to be built by the owner to count as "homebuilt", but that rule is heavily bent, mostly by full-time contractors (which is probably a good thing). We glued the fuselage and wings together just like a model airplane from Walmart. Jet engine from Czech Republic, major body parts from the Phillipines. For some reason I didn't want to fly in it at 400 mph. But it sure was pretty:
