Ex-officer says woman he killed was blackmailing him

MEMPHIS - A former Memphis police officer said the woman he is charged with killing last year was demanding money from him and threatened to tell his wife about their affair, according to court documents filed this week.

Chancy K. Jones, an officer for three years, was fired soon after Phyllis Malone, 31, was found shot multiple times in her car at about 6 a.m. Sept. 9 near a service station on Whitten Road near Interstate 40.

Jones, 38, said in a statement to police that Malone told him she was pregnant and wanted money for either an abortion or for insurance for the baby.

"She got upset when I answered the question (that) I was going to think about it," Jones said, adding that he already had given her $140 in the past. "She became irate, cursing, threatening and blackmailing, saying that she was going to tell my wife and take me to child support."

Jones said Malone eventually calmed down and that they hugged, but then the discussion again became heated and she said he would pay "in the long run."

"She started fussing again and she said 'Well, I'll just see you at your house tomorrow,'" Jones continued. "... She was determined that she was going to tell (my wife) and come by my house. I asked her not to do it. She said 'Bye, Chancy.' That's when I pulled out a pistol and I shot her."

Jones said he was standing outside Malone's car on the passenger side when he shot her several times, including at least once in the head, with a .38-caliber revolver.

He said he later threw the gun in a river along with her cell phone "'cause I knew she had been calling and texting me."

Criminal Court Judge W. Mark Ward ruled Wednesday that Jones' statement will be admissible in trial.

Jones, who is free on $200,000 bond, returns to court later this month.

Once you confess the crime, why in the world would any judge release him on bail?

Bail is only for defendants who plead no guilty.

This guy is obviously a danger to himself and everyone else, with no question of being sent to prison for 2nd degree murder, at least.
