Freedom is Important because People are Important

I encountered a link to this Pravda article, and was surprised at the sentiments I found therein.
http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/107459-0/

Here was a provocative quote:
"The proud American will go down into his slavery with out a fight, beating his chest and proclaiming to the world, how free he really is."

Three things surprised me.

1) The Russians apparently blame 'the West' for their own experience with marxism. (?!)
2) The Russians appear to be openly derisive of homosexuality.
3) The Russians are convinced that we are descending into Marxism, and think we are fools for it.

For some reason, I did not anticipate any of these three sentiments from a Russian newspaper.

Here's where I stopped reading, six sentences in:

Quote:

First, the population was dumbed down through a politicized and substandard education system based on pop culture, rather then the classics.

Sorry, but you don't get to call me "dumbed down" if you don't know the proper usage of the words "then" and "than".

Pravda FAIL.

Hello,

They do English better than I do Russian.

You ought not to stop reading. This is a premier news source of a major world nation discussing our country.

Insights abound. We may not agree with what they say. We may be able to easily identify much of it as drivel. But this is what a lot of people think of us.

and the pop culture thing is a fact

how could you sit through big brother, or mom swap, or whatever crap out there and feel there is intelligent life out there.

Personally I love wandering the discount bin at chapters picking up books on many subjects... but I still have the impression not many people read anymore.

And Anthony, your right... I have taken courses in Russian and French, and tried to learn some Spanish at work... verbs, tenses, very tough. Also typing something up in another language on a computer, then hitting spell check can give you some interesting results.

And yet, here am I, decidedly NOT putting out a Russian-language "news" site.

As for Pravda.ru being in any way a "premier" news source, I think you have them mistaken for the old USSR's "Pravda" ("Truth") newspaper. From what I gather, the current iteration is roughly akin to getting your "news" from PirateNews (Hey, the word NEWS is right in his name!) or from the New York Post.

From the Wiki:

Quote:

After the paper was closed down in 1991 by decree of then President Boris Yeltsin, many of the staff founded a new paper with the same name, which is now a tabloid-style Russian news source. There is an unrelated Internet-based newspaper, Pravda Online ( www.Pravda.ru) run by former Pravda newspaper employees. A number of other newspapers have also been called Pravda, most notably Komsomolskaya Pravda, formerly the official newspaper of the now defunct Komsomol and currently the best-selling tabloid in Russia.

Russian communism was not homegrown, it was imported, and supported by the west. There were socialists in Europe and the US who wanted to see Kerensky gone. Lenin was shipped in on a night train from Berlin, he wasn't standing there in Russia with people rallied around him.

Pravda's actually pretty cool, they don't take themselves too seriously, and own up to being intent as much on entertaining as informing you.

Even so, their journalism, such as it is, it hell and far away better than american journalism, which amounts to copy-pasting press releases and wire reports.

Come on, how many times do you have to see verbatim text matches on six-seven mainstream "news" sources before you realize they're just copy-pasting ?

It's a DAMN sad day when Pravda outclasses the New York Times.

I was waiting for someone to notice that Pravda was a tabloid. That said, they're sometimes not that far off the mark. Neither, for that matter, is Pirate News.

Something really weird is happening to political discourse. I read this article and with very few alterations, it could be a transcript of a broadcast on the PTL Network, an op-ed by Carl Rove or Lynden LaRouche (of course if it were from LaRouche it would have to be at least 8 pages longer) or a post by Wulfenstar.

It's all the same contempt for...governance? It's just not possible, they want to tell us, that government has been devised by anyone for any other purpose than to destroy people or steal their money. I'm an anarchist and I know THAT'S not true. It's all bringing to mind Freud's Totem and Taboo, it's all so Oedipal--whoever is in charge is trying to DESTROY US, we must destroy them before they get us! And yet, we live in the real world, where anarchism is a joke with a stupid punchline: Somalia.

So, I'm not buying this fashionable brand of "anti-Authoritarianism" these various shills and ignorami are selling, this attack on the very idea that people in power are human beings, no worse nor better than the rest of us. That everything would be fine if we just let the strongest decide for the weakest. And logic is a compulsion that inevitably leads to some outrageous "conclusion" or other--everything we don't like today is just a dangerous first step toward some absolute disaster. Fortunately for us humans, our big plans just don't tend to work out all that well.

Bingo - especially when that same brand of pseudo-anti-authoritarianism is being sold to you by the EXACT SAME PEOPLE who not even a year ago were insisting that you had nothing to complain about in regards to the Patriot Act, torture, or warrantless wiretaps, because if you had nothing to hide, you had nothing to fear.

Their ENTIRE complaint about "tyranny" rests solely on the fact that the "tyrant" in charge is a black man with a "foreign-sounding" name.

Oh, and for how long has Pravda - in all its various forms - been predicting the death and dissolution of the United States? Since long before the former Soviet Union collapsed and crumbled, if memory serves. Oddly, they never once seem to have predicted THAT breakup...

Heh - they're just being capitalist pigs - they know hatin' on the US of A sells newspapers. That has worked for many rags over the last 8 years - ask anyone who lived in England during the Bush years - hate sells. They just don't want it to end.

If I'm not mistaken, that Pravda is not the Russian newspaper that Russians read. It's a provactive website aimed at pissing off Americans.

edited: sorry, someone has already noted that.

I just want to add, don't take this to be an example of what Russians feel about the US.

No worries, Ant'ny. Someone pointed it out to me once, so I had to check around a bit. Internet's scary like that! :)

But hell, for that matter, the mainstream media's scary like that, too...
