JK Rowling denied top US honour

Harry Potter author JK Rowling missed out on a top honour because some US politicians believed she "encouraged witchcraft", it has been claimed.

Matt Latimer, former speech writer for President George W Bush, said that some members of his administration believed her books promoted sorcery.

As a result, she was never presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The claims appear in Latimer's new book called Speechless: Tales of a White House Survivor.

He wrote that "narrow thinking" led White House officials to object to giving Rowling the civilian honour.

The award acknowledges contributions to US national interest, world peace or cultural endeavours.

Past literary recipients of the award include John Steinbeck and Harper Lee.

Others denied the privilege under the Bush administration included Senator Edward Kennedy, who died in August this year.

Latimer claimed, in his book, that the veteran politician and health care activist was excluded because he was deemed to be too liberal

They ARE children's books. It's not like he was reading the boring old reports and legislation and executive orders that Cheney was giving him, am I right?

Maybe they should have titled that NIE "Harry Potter determined to strike inside the United States".

Maybe he'd have read the fucking thing then.

Maybe that's the real reason they didn't want to give Rowling any recognition... The speech Bush might've given.

"This here's better than My Pet Goat, and no foolin'! All the whizbang glowy stuff and people flyin' round and funny names reminds me of some good times when I was on the National Guard, heh heh heh."

That was probably a cheap shot, but I'm beyond caring.

I feel vaguely dirty now. Perhaps in the future I will refrain from imitating George W. Bush's speech mannerisms.

WTF do novels on witchcraft in the British Empire have to do with "American Freedom"? Especially since the British Empire has a nasty habit of invading and genociding USA.

Bush LOVES witchcraft. The Bush family worships Satan and performs "ritual" human sacrifice at Bohemian Grove every year (ask Jeff Gannon). George W Bush was a member of a Satanic cult in Brownsville Texas / Matamores Mexico that mass murdered and cannibalized sheeple. Georges Bush are members of a Nazi "Christian" (Satanic) church in Texas, and ate off Hitler's silverware, dined with skeletons and jacked off in coffins at Skull & Bones. George W Bush's grandfather was Aleister Crowley The Beast 666. Very Christian...

Rowling is 100% pre-approved by the Satanists who run the NWO, to overthrow what's left of Christianity. At Borders Books in Knoxville TN, hers were the only books allowed on display in store windows -- not one copy of her book, hundreds of copies on the same book filling up the 50-foot-long window floor to ceiling (mass brainwhashing for the idiots amongst US).

I say burn the witch!

I'm a fan of the books, but as a Pagan witch, I'm always surprised that anyone would think they 'promote sorcery.' Harry Potter is a classic tale of good vs. evil. The whole arch of the story has much more in common with Christian mythology than anything else, even if the metaphor is wizards and witches and spells and magic. Anyone who thinks the books vaguely resemble anything occult never actually read them, and it is just the knee-jerk "ZOMG these talk about witches and witches are eeeevvvviiiiiilllll!" occult = bad response. It's kind of mind-boggling to me.
Also, occultbad.

I think the idea that she might have gotten a Presidential Medal of Freedom was because for the first time in a long time, kids were actually lining up and begging to be allowed to READ. Apparently PN thinks that's a bad idea. I'll try to keep that in mind, and never read his posts...

For a country the prides itself on its " religious freedoms " it always amazes me that there is so much bigotry towards Wicans. I have known a few, and found they are probably the last ones to push their beliefs on others, and the least likely to use those beliefs to attack others.... unlike some Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc

Even when one organization accepts them, others have to attack

The creed is 'Do no harm.' Of course, I think that's supposed to be a core of all religions, but hey.
And yes, freedom of religion means any religion. As long as no one's trying to harm anyone, I'm happy.

It got me right away as well, and complete with the sacrificial chosen one, the whole shebang. It wasn't until after the last book that Rowling confessed: "I wanted to deliver the Christian message to people it wouldn't normally reach" Yeah, JK, sure you did. You also did a lot of research into what people buy and how to make fantasy crack. But yes, she is serious. What cracks me up is fundie xtians banning Harry Potter.

Oh, and kudos for this guy:

"Also, occult ≠ bad."

I've been looking for this Unicode character for a while. Now I can just copy and paste. ≠

Btw, I love the idea of Harry Potter on the terrorist watch list.

Keep the Shiny side up

Methinks, from interviews I've heard with Mr. Latimer, that he's trying to sell his book.

Two presidential Medals of Freedom were presented for Literature during the Bush II administration; to Jacques Barzun in 2003 and Harper Lee in 2007.
