I think it has less to do with celebrity politics and more to do with Brazil having a better sales pitch

Yes, there was a tremendous amount of resistance to the idea in Chicago. The plan was to take down the Midway. This is equivalent to someone saying in NY "We're going to level Central Park and build an Olympic stadium." Ironically, it was the Midway where Obama held his victory rally IIRC.

Now we have to wait and see what neighborhood Rio levels for this. We all remember what happened last time. Honestly? We should just have an International Olympic Center. We have a UN Buildling...

I wish they would have gotten it. I think Chicago desperately NEEDS a lot of urban re-development, and it would have created 10's of thousands of jobs. Maybe some of those jobs could have gone to the poor kids there, who really seem to need something to change in their lives. The Olympics, for me, are more fun to watch when they're in America. I'm a bit amazed that we didn't get it.

Jongs, amid all the partisanship being tossed around about this whole shebang, I just wanted to say a big "Thank you" to you for that sentiment. That's how I felt about it as well, and I couldn't see what the problem was with Obama or ANYONE trying to bring more economic boost to the U.S.A.

Seems Oprah and even Big O just can't compete with this:

I'd have loved to see the Olympics come to Chicago, but I've got a feeling there'll be plenty of reasons to watch 'em in Brazil...

No thank you's required. I've watched this "issue" for a couple of days and really couldn't understand what the "political" problem was. With everything else the country's dealing with, it seemed a bit petty & smarmy & ridiculous to me hearing the Obama haters attacking him for this. Bush went to China for the Olympics and had a swell ole time, so what's the beef?

the judgment was in Denmark Copenhagen, I mean who the hell knows all about Oprah in Copenhagen. She's everywhere in America but she does not hold the same Celeb status in Denmark

Maybe they know soccer stars and the likes of George Foreman and gold medalists like Lewis but I don't think the Mistress of Chat has much pull over there in Denmark
Brazil brought Pele....and their video pitch looked better

2 There was a lot of controversy behind Chicago, the site locations and the fact that a lot of tax payer money would be back in the hands of corrupt bankers and property developers who already bankrupted the city.

I don't know. Oprah's pretty much world-wide, isn't she? The IOC, I hate to say, has a long & disgusting record on race. Shudder to think that had anything to do with it, but who knows. I also think these things are pre-determined anyhow, and these dog & pony announcement events are just ego-fodder for the IOC swells.

Rio's murder rate is roughly 20 times that of Chicago.

Looks like you're batting zero on this one, since your other charge has also been disproved.

Nah, I mean, there was a decline, but nothing major.

The Zimbabwe Dollar inflation rate is 6.9 x 10¹⁰⁸%
Yes, you read that right. It's the highest ever recorded by more than a googol. It's 690 million googol percent. Thus, if you had were a millionaire in 2008, you have less than a googolth today. If you took the world's total assets and turned them into Zimbabwe dollars when Mugabe came to power, you would have less than a 1/googol cents or one US dollar would be worth
$0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001
Daily inflation rates were 100%.
Prices were listed like this:
March Prices: apples: 10^32 x 2^today so insert 15 if it's the 15th.
They had to outlaw the writing of checks because people would hold accounts in US dollars, and write checks in zimbabwe dollars and by the time the checks were cashed, they'd be worthless.

Sweet cheese-wearing Yoruk! (Don't know where the hell THAT came from.)

Are there enough trees on 10 fully-forested Earths to print all that "money"?

If I caught a speck of dust floating through the air, it'd be worth a gazillion bajillion quazillion times more than the Zimbabwe "dollar".

Seriously, how is that money anymore?

ETA: On Topic: It's been too long a while since St. Louis hosted the Olympics. Maybe in 2020 they'll win the bid, and then destroy and replace every stadium, arena, and dome downtown, AGAIN!!!

[rant on]
GRR!!! I'm still uber pissed about old Busch Stadium! Last time I was in STL for the 4th (3rd) of July fair, when the Metrolink went past the Neeew Busch Stadium, I nearly THREW UP IN MY MOUTH!!! The bastards BLEW UP MY COLISEUM(!), and replaced it with a FENWAY PARK WANNABE!!! ARRG!!! [rant off]

Brazil hosting the Olympics could provide an opportunity. Much like how the Chinese Olympics nudged China about their pollution problems (not sure how long it lasted, but they are installing a lot more solar energy now, as I heard it), this could be a useful vector to address the consequences of slash and burn deforestation.

But that's the norm lately in America, you couldn't have missed THAT! Anything to shine a negative light on him and his administration. This shouldn't have surprised you at all.

What gets me more is the CHEERING and joy that we lost...it shows just how far this mentality has gone, and that's downright depressing.

Yes, their crime rate is tons more than Chicago. Me, I put it down to South America's first chance at the Olympics, while the U.S. has had HOW many? I think it's only right, tho' I'm sorry for the loss of jobs. On the other hand, didn't some sites lose money from hosting the Olympics? Chicago doesn't need THAT, either, eh?

All in all, another tempest in a teapot. I wish we had a semi-working two-party system again, this bullshit has gone waaaay past "pathetic" and left "disgusting" in the dust...

Well , it can't have hurt Brazil's economy that ScamBO has arranged that corporate-welfare deal to support offshore drilling by Petrobras for the personal enrichment of non-citizen Obama financier George Soros...

Obama's granny was present at his birth in Kenya ; many African nations acknowledge ScamBO as a 'native son' , but Barack's sister says that he was 'born' in at least one of the two hospitals in Honolulu , if not BOTH of them...

So , who can be blamed for being skeptical when ScamBO tries to claim Chi-town as his 'hometown' ? Seems that works with Oprah , but maybe not the I.O.C. !

This would be nice. Only snag is that the Chinese olympics were in Beijing, where the polution is worst; Rio is far from the deforestation areas.

It might bring attn. to the orchestrated killings of street children in Rio however.

Umm, another thought edges in, so obvious that I am surprised no one else brought it up.

If you were the olympic committee, member nations and the athletes, would YOU want to deal with the fucking DHS/TSA jackbooks and american alphabet goons up your ass with a telescope every step of the way, and spying on everything from your telephone to the contents of the plumbing ?

Let's not pretend that wasn't a factor here, given that other nations are so pissed about it that many are reccommending against tourism here.

Frem,

Good thought, hadn't occurred to me.

There's also the: Hey, I want to go on a vacation to... Chicago!

Here's what did occur to me:
It is an election, so:
Asia prolly voted for Tokyo
Europe woulda voted for Madrid
Latin America would vote for Brazil
The entire Islamic world would vote against us.

Okay, people voting... I realize looking over this list I left out a category: Countries that just *hate* us.

ROUND 1: 94
MADRID: 28
RIO DE JANEIRO: 26
TOKYO: 22
CHICAGO: 18

ROUND 2: 95
RIO DE JANEIRO: 46
MADRID: 29
TOKYO: 20

ROUND 3: 96
RIO DE JANEIRO: 66
MADRID: 32

96/126, I figure the others were holding out protest votes for losing choices not mentioned, or they weren't there.

See if you can spot places where we might lose votes to Rio, Madrid or Tokyo:

Afghanistan
Algeria
Antigua and Barbuda
Argentina
Aruba
Australia
Austria
Bahamas
Bahrain
Bangladesh
Barbados
Belgium
Bermuda
Bolivia
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Brazil
British Virgin Islands
Brunei Darussalam
Bulgaria
Cambodia
Canada
Cape Verde
Cayman Islands
Chile
China
Colombia
Cook Islands
Costa Rica
Croatia
Cuba
Cyprus
Czech Republic
Denmark
Dominica
Dominican Republic
Ecuador
Egypt
El Salvador
Estonia
Ethiopia
Fiji
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Guatemala
Guyana
Honduras
Hungary
Iceland
India
Indonesia
Iran
Iraq
Ireland
Israel
Italy
Ivory Coast
Jamaica
Japan
Jordan
Kenya
Kuwait
Laos
Latvia
Lebanon
Libya
Lithuania
Luxembourg
Macedonia
Malaysia
Malta
Martinique
Mauritius
Mexico
Montenegro
Morocco
Myanmar
Nepal
Netherlands
New Zealand
Nicaragua
Norway
Oman
Palau
Panama
Papua New Guinea
Paraguay
Peru
Philippines
Poland
Portugal
Puerto Rico
Qatar
Romania
Russia
Saint Lucia
Samoa
Saudi Arabia
Serbia
Singapore
Slovakia
Slovenia
South Africa
South Korea
Spain
Sri Lanka
Suriname
Sweden
Switzerland
Syria
Thailand
Trinidad and Tobago
Tunisia
Turkey
Uganda
Ukraine
United Arab Emirates
United Kingdom
United States
Uruguay
Vanuatu
Venezuela
Vietnam
Yemen

Edit: Let me know if anyone has the actual tallies. It's depressing to look over this list and note how many of these countries we have either recently bombed, invaded or threatened to bomb or invade.

Here's who said they were going to vote for us, a fair number (marked) didn't actually end up voting.
Look for any puppet govts. ;)
(hey, at least Obama got Africa's vote)

Aruba
Barbados
Cameroon - didn't vote
Colombia
Cote d'Ivoire - didn't vote
Gambia - didn't vote
Great Britain
Greece
Ireland
Israel
Kenya
Kuwait
Namibia - didn't vote
Pakistan - didn't vote
Panama
Philippines
Puerto Rico - (um, even we don't recognize their independence)
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
South Africa
Uganda
Zambia - didn't vote

Some countries apparently have more than one representative voting, so it's possible that non-voting countries had zero votes to cast. It's likely that votes were determined by previous olympic performance, as a lot of other things like starting position, number of slots in a particular competition, etc. are decided that way (We all remember that the US had two figure skating singles slots and so they bumped eligible Michelle Kwon in favor of ineligible Nancy Kerrigan, even if it wasn't Kerrigan's fault, it certainly wasn't Kwon's.)

Anyway, Canada, Egypt and Hungary were on the fence, casting one vote for and against us.
Australia, Finland each cast one for and two votes against us.

So the short list of solid votes for Chicago are:

Aruba
Barbados
Colombia
Great Britain
Greece
Ireland
Israel
Kenya
Kuwait
Panama
Philippines
Puerto Rico
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
South Africa
Uganda

If it's worth anything, Halliburton *tried* to vote for us!
