Apparently the socialists gave it to him "for his extraordinary efforts to destroy the U.S. economy and national security infrastructure."

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

What a thing to wake up to...

I voted for "hope" and "change", but so far I've seen damned little of either. And I'm damned if I can see any great strides he's made towards "peace" - at least this quickly into his administration.

Iraq: Still a quagmire. Still mired in it. There's *talk* of leaving, maybe, someday.

Iran: Lots of sabre-rattling, much of it from our side of the ocean. Little in the way of real negotiations aimed at securing anything like "peace", in our time or any other.

Afghanistan: "Hello, Mister President; this is Hamid Karzai. Hey, listen - our country's on fire, and burning quickly. Can you send us some gasoline?"

I mean, seriously... I *like* the guy. I think he just MIGHT do some amazing things (let's hope they're amazingly good, and not amazingly bad like the douche he followed into office). But to give him the Nobel Peace Prize NOW, when he hasn't really done much of anything?

Oh, wait - he DID get everybody here at home all riled up and toting guns to his appearances. Is that what we're calling "peace" these days?

I gotta say . . . I heard this right before getting out of the car to go into work. I was joking that the "shocking" winner would be Obama, but when I actually heard it? It made me ill. I mean, c'mon. The guy has done NOTHING to warrant this at this point in time. He made one globe-hopping trip to say "sorry" for America and they're calling THAT an "extraordinary effort"? Really? Or did they think it extraordinary that he flew to Copenhagen to promote Chicago for the site of the 2016 Olympics? Really?

Again . . . in the words of our beloved captain . . ., "Huh."

Mike, I find we usually agree on most everything, but I'mma have to part ways here a bit, I think it's cool. It's like a supreme thank you for the better 'tude out of the White House, and a vote of confidence that Obama will continue on this course & achieve quite a bit before Rush Limbaugh wins the seat in 2012.

I get all that, Chris, but still - do you give the Nobel Prize in physics for what someone MIGHT do? Or just because they're a better public speaker than "that other guy"?

I would LOVE it if Obama were to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 8 or 10 years, because his extraordinary efforts actually brought peace and prosperity to more of the world. So far, though, I'm just not seein' it.

And I think it sets a pretty low bar to give out the Peace Prize for "not being Dubya Bush". I mean, really - is that all it takes these days?

Why do you think that?

On what precedent do you base this? You state two things: he's black, and he was elected President of the U.S.

I have to ask: does it take just one of those things to win the prize, or does it take both? If it just takes the one, then why hasn't every black person in the world won it, or every President? And if it takes both of them together to be eligible, then how has anyone else EVER won it?

Let me ask you guys this... other than the fact that he is the first black President, what has he done to earn the Nobel Peace Prize?

Anyone?

Did he cure cancer? Aids? Create peace in the Middle East?

Anything?

Hes been in office for less than a year...

Maybe I thought winning the Nobel Peace Prize was more involved than this.

I thought you had to actually DO something.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize brings a new level of meaninglessness to the award.

"Not Being Dubya" ain't enough. There are lots of nations that have replaced a bad leader with a leader who has accomplished nothing.

"Inspiring a nation" ain't measurable, because it's easy to inspire a nation for tiny specks of time. The submission deadline for the prize was 2 weeks after he became president. This means his conduct in inspiring the nation as its leader for 2 weeks was sufficient? Even 'Dubya' inspired this nation for 2 weeks after 9-11, with approval ratings shooting through the roof on nothing more substantial than patriotism.

This award makes me shake my head, and I feel shame. Actual shame that a do-nothing president has won this award instead of someone who might have accomplished anything measurable anywhere in the globe.

I wish he would decline the award, and say, "I'm sorry. I haven't earned this yet. I will strive to be deserving of it someday. Until then, please give it to someone better suited."

THAT would be a start to greatness.

You're right about this, Wulf. I doubt him being black had anything to do with it, though, so I don't blame the others for throwing some flak your way on that one.

So, basically . . . this is just a superfluous award and Obama really should respectfully decline the "honor" given the circumstances. Period. The deadline was 2 weeks after he was inaugurated? Really? Really? I mean seriously though. Take the explanation step by step:

"Initiatives to reduce nuclear arms" - He basically went to the UN and said "Can't we all just get along? We'll do it if you do it."

"Initiatives to ease tensions with the Muslim world" - He basically went to a Muslim country and said "Can't we all just get along? We will if you will."

"Initiatives to stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism." - He basically went to some other countries and said "Can't we all just get along? We will if you will."

So, like Wulf, I think we should all submit our names for next year's prize. It seems like all we have to do is go around being nice to people and saying sorry to folks of different nationalities and religions than ourselves for whatever wrongs they perceive America has done to their people.

Oh . . . and blame it all on Bush. That part is vital. Because . . . you know . . . Roland Burris says he's the reason Chicago didn't get the 2016 Olympics.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

While I too think it would have been nice for Obama to have earned the award with a major accomplishment, or at least a few years of good work, I find myself nevertheless pleased at this.

And why shouldn't I be ?

Dubya was AT BEST a major embarrassment to anyone with a sense of justice, fairness, or even reality.
I cringed at every thing he did. He had the largest security failure on HIS watch. He started not one but TWO wars of choice, which so far have killed hundreds of thousands, ruined the economy with mountainous debt, shredded the reputation of the US with allies and potential allies, and other crimes and misdemeanors.

NOT being Dubya is worthy of note.

DREAMTROVE

Oh, come on, this is absurd.

I'm in complete agreement with Mike on this one.

Remember, one went to a man who made a boring movie that was so incredibly inaccurate scientifically, that it set back the cause of environmentalism years at least.

I want to add, I think if someone on the left does something, they get a prize. Maybe a little balance is needed on the committee.

This is even worse than the Gore fiasco though: A man gets the Nobel Peace Prize for escalating a war. So far I've read something about him getting 1400 Americans killed and god knows how many afghans and pakistanis.

I'm afraid the Peace Prize committee is really totally discrediting itself. But then, it did that when it overlooked Chris Hill's work on N.K. to give it to Al Gore.

Meanwhile, in looneyland:

Seriously, the "not W" is part of it, but "OMG, it's a liberal! (committee orgasms)" angle here cannot be ignored.

Finally, there's another angle: The prize is often awarded to assholes who are a menace, as a Dale Carnegie approach to get them to change their behavior. This is why it was given to Yasser Arafat. It gives them a high standard to live up to. "I'm a man of peace. Me!"

Oh no. That might be it. We've been voted the world's biggest asshole. Hmm. considering the amount of chaos we're currently causing, is this true. Have we become the world's biggest asshole state?

I remember a few years ago, every tin plated dictator like Chavez, Mugabe etc. would denounce the US to gain creds, and distract from their own evils. But are we now in the same position? Are we the tin plated dictatorship that points fingers at Venezuela and Iran because we are just trying to deflect attention away from who really dealt it?

Racism is in all of us, like original xenophobia- how we educate ourselves to control or eradicate it is the important thing. To play to it to compensate for other more liberal views is intellectually dishonest. To hate on Obama to balance the hate on Bush is too simplistic to even discuss. Bush did some good things, Obama is doing some bad- call each individual play, don't disqualify entire games.

"NOT being Dubya is worthy of note."

Hello,

No. It's not. It's really not. We need to set the bar a bit higher for the US president. "Better than the Last Really Bad President" is not a place to set expectations, and it is absolutely NOT worthy of prizes and laurels. This attitude is not only disgusting, it's dangerous.

Many of us were overcome by the euphoria of having a better president than Bush, but what does that mean? It's time to stop hailing the man for being 'The Diet Coke of Evil," to borrow an Austin Powers reference.

Obama has repeatedly and reliably been a disappointment to people on both the left and the right. You ought not to get medals for that. You certainly shouldn't be PROUD to have your president get an award that boldly declares, "This jerk is an improvement on the last jerk."

Is he better than Bush? So far, sure. But that probably applies to the majority of Americans.

I believe it's the first time I ever used the word in a sentance before. Sorry. Product of public education here.

Meet the People Who Were Passed Over for Obama

Sima Samar, women's rights activist in Afghanistan: "With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women's Affairs."

Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.

"Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence."

Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: "These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon."

"Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for 'inciting subversion of state power.'"

"Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China's communist system. He now lives in the United States."

"You married a girl who isn't white, big deal, so did I, that does not equal being racism-free. Racism is in all of us, like original xenophobia- how we educate ourselves to control or eradicate it is the important thing. To play to it to compensate for other more liberal views is intellectually dishonest. To hate on Obama to balance the hate on Bush is too simplistic to even discuss. Bush did some good things, Obama is doing some bad- call each individual play, don't disqualify entire games."

WTF?

Im mad because the guy didn't actually EARN this. It discredits everyone who ACTUALLY did!

Do you think if McCain had won the election, he would be getting the award? Hell no!

Hillary, maybe.

But it just goes to show that its rigged. Libs cream their pants cause hes black, they would do the same thing cause Hillary is a woman (barely).

So, Im more pissed that this guy did NOTHING to earn the award... yet they give it to him cause hes black (or to Hillary cause she a woman) than to some schmuck out there working their ass off to make the world a better place.

Yeah. Just lower the standards.

By the way, I tied my shoelaces this morning.

Someone give me a trophy.

4 cents worth:

1.Obama hasn't done anything yet to deserve this. I agree that he has the potential, but he hasn't accomplished it yet.( And remember, I'm a liberal, I like the guy, I voted for him...)

2.As to why he was nominated or won, you'd have to ask the Scandi-hoovians, if you don't believe their official statement.

3.He's entitled to be nominated or to win. If he'd have ever said, " Boy, I deserve a Nobel," or, "I can get a Nobel if I do this," or "This'll qualify me for a Nobel,", you'd have to condemn him as having an awful lot of balls.

4. I looked over Rue's list of winners-- there are some good folks and good groups on there, who have done some inspiring things to lessen war, violence, and the effects thereof on the world, some more temporarily than others. There are some other folks who encouraged the hope of some progress. And there are some, just, well, bad choices...

In a concrete fashion I am forced to agree. In a way, it's like the Nobel peeps are betting... like if he can do what would actually win it, fine. If he can't, well then, we're all finished anyway.
2012 is coming.
You won't be around to say they're wrong if humanity folds, right?
I personally applaud them for betting we won't.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

"Libs cream their pants cause hes black, they would do the same thing cause Hillary is a woman (barely)."

Here you are, pretending to speak for people after you claimed you can't speak for anyone but yourself - and on top of that, completely getting it wrong - yet again. And I suspect if you write that, it's because it's how you habitually think. That's a bad habit you really need to get away from.

Try to limit yourself to stating your opinions and not someone else's, OK ?

There are many people who have done heroic work in the face of evil, who have put themselves at risk and sometimes suffered terribly. How does one apportion credit ? Does it go to the anonymous political prisoner who does as much as they personally can for their fellow inmates from their limited position ? Does it go to the group who has put in years of work to try to ameliorate the worst human-made tragedies ?

I think one has to look at their global contribution to WORLD peace. And who has better turned the tide than Obama, refuting Bush's 'we refuse to talk to 'them', we don't recognize the cause of global peace, shoot first and never apologize' agenda ?

Getting one of THE major global forces engaging in diplomacy again is a major step up from the pit Bush dug for us. It is a game-changer for the world.

In earnest, I think it was premature. Ridiculously premature, even. You ought to receive such a prestigious award as a 'lifetime achievement' thingy -- or, at the very least, have met the 'achievement' part. Being elected President should not be enough. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy just fine. But to give it to him now, when he really hasn't done anything yet? I mean, if for nothing else, what will you give him when he actually DOES arise to greatness?

Then again, the Nobel Peace Prize has never been about accomplishments per se. It's a political award. Which is precisely what I dislike about it. Sure, support a Sovjet dissident; or a Tibetan monk; give him the Nobel Prize! But, in the end, all you're really doing is meddling in the political affairs of other countries -- only difference being that your agenda is blatantly open this time, instead of the usual hidden.

I guess I'm an old-fashioned guy that way. I feel people should receive awards for things they accomplished, and not because they happen to be a figure in history others would love to see rise at the expensive of this-or-that regime deemed wrong. It's so ostentatiously corrupt that way. Corrupt with a halo.

*sigh

Affirmative Action... its extended to the Nobel committee.

Yay.

Mike

The percentage you're paying is too high-priced
While you're living beyond all your means;
And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams

If,by being the first black President, Mr Obama has cured all racial prejudice around the world, then the prize would be justified. But even then, that should be issued to the American voters for making it happen. However, I fail to see where that prejudice has been eradicated and therefore, I doubt very much that being black is the justification for the award.Although, without any real indication of WHY he has been awarded, I can see where the uninformed may arrive at that conclusion.

Peacekeeper---keeping order in every verse!!!

From CNN: "President Obama today joined an elite group of U.S. presidents when he won the Nobel Peace Prize. Unlike his predecessors, Obama was chosen not for substantive accomplishments, but for inspiring "hope" at the start of his term"

Well, halle-fucking-luya.

Im sitting here everyday, trying to inspire hope, strength and peace. Hope for the future. Something where we can ALL live with freedom, hope and liberty.

Where is my fucking medal?
