I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

"So did I.
I ordered a nice katana from Japan. Cost me a pretty penny too.
I'M engaging in diplomacy. Where's my award.
Btw, Im still waiting for my trophy after I tied my shoes this morning."

Are you TRYING to be really, really stoooopid ?

Are you the president ? Do you set the international policy for THE major military power in the world ? Is your policy key to global international affairs ?

If you can't see how completely asinine your argument is, you're completely OTL.

Try thinking with your brain instead of your hate, OK ?

This guy has DONE NOTHING!

But because he sits there, and proclaims "hope" we should all just bend our knee?

No. Not in this life, ever.

Obama read a lot of comic books, Ill give him that. He knows the right strings to pluck.

But not for this boy.

The Nobel committee just lost all credibility to me.

Which hurts more than I can express.

He DID do this.

Okay, so he replaced Bush; which was a step up for the world, no argument there. So he says "Let's talk," instead of "We don't talk with them." And I greatly appreciate the change that has come to America. But, at the end of the day, "Let's talk" is really nothing more than an expression of good intent. As Niska said, people must know what happens after that. Will it actually lead to peace? Will Iraq become a safer place because of it? Will the Palestinians and the Israeli know peace in our time as a result of it? My point being: only in retrospect, like 20 years from now, will we be able to say whether "Let's talk" was really the beginning of a new era of peace, or whether he meant well, but could eventually not accomplish much.

I dunno; giving people awards on what they might accomplish; or based in support of what you hope they'll achieve, it's a slippery slope. I still feel more comfortable handing out such awards for things people actually already did.

But you're blaming the entire degradation of the 'quality' of the prize on Obama - and not on Arafat or any other arguably far worse choice. And WHY are you focusing on Obama ? Hmmmmm ? Is it b/c it galls you to see one of 'them' doing so well ?

I suspect if it had gone to ANYONE else who was undeserving, you wouldn't care one whit.

Dodging the point with some meaningless comment about your shoes ? No outrage over Arafat's prize ? Or Sadat's ? Or de Klerk's ? Or Annan's ?

I thought not.

You have one standard for Obama, the black male American, and another for everyone else, not black male Americans. It's OK for them, but not Obama.

Hello Rue,

You make a good point, which is that giving the prize to Obama is on par with giving the prize to Arafat.

Both prizes were awarded on what people hoped might happen, and neither on what was actually accomplished.

And that's still nothing to be proud of.

So, like Wulf, I think we should all submit our names for next year's prize. It seems like all we have to do is go around being nice to people and saying sorry to folks of different nationalities and religions than ourselves for whatever wrongs they perceive America has done to their people.

Nope, Ripper, it's not even that. You don't have to DO any of that stuff - you just have to say you WANT TO DO that stuff.

Sorry, but on this one, I'm in complete agreement with most of the "righties" around here. Obama MIGHT do great things, but his biggest "accomplishment" so far is not being Dubya. And while that's an admirable goal, it really tarnishes the Peace Prize to give it to someone just because you like them or think they're pretty.

For fuck's sake, Bill Clinton did more this year for world peace than Obama has done. Slick Willie actually got a couple "journalists" freed from a North Korean prison. Could Big O do that?

To me, this denigrates the prize, AND it both gives armaments to his detractors AND delegitimizes his presidency, because it really DOES make it appear that the world just worships at his feet and falls all over themselves genuflecting to him.

Besides, you don't give out Nobel prizes for what someone MIGHT do. If you do, then I've got an idea for faster-than-light travel that will actually make gold appear in your pockets upon your arrival. Can I have my physics prize, please? Understand that my research isn't complete, and it might never work out, but that million bucks could go a long way towards helping me out!

Oh, and I'm going to write about it all in a fantastically literate masterpiece, so can I go ahead and just collect that Nobel prize for literature, too? And since everyone will be rich in the future (which will be in the past, since we're going there faster than light. Duh.), I've solved the economic crisis. So there's ANOTHER prize for me, right?

Yes, I haven't even gotten to the end of this thread yet, and that's EXACTLY what I was gonna say.

They gave it to him for the sole and simple reason that he ain't Bush.

Which, while no particular credit to Obama, and something of a backhanded insult...

It's a pretty fucking damning condemnation of Shrub, isn't it now - and IMHO, utterly deserved.

I would prefer outrage directed at starvation, war, brutal treatment of humans - especially women and young girls who are so frequently victimized by religion and custom - anything but outrage over this. What is this, really ? To me this whole thing is a non-issue, completely unsubstantive. MEH - it is nothing.

So while I can say that I am pleased that a US president got the prize, I can also say that this particular item is way down on my list of importance.

But as a target for comment, it certainly has been illuminating to see where people stand and what arguments they bring to the table.

I was honestly going to leave that part out, but as you brought it up first, I'll follow your lead. I'm right there with ya, Kwicko. For those on the left, like yourself, who loathe the argument from the right that Obama is "The One" or "The Messiah" this is nothing but bad news, because it all but proves to those on the right that they were, more or less, correct about how "lefties" view Obama. Not saying all on the Nobel Prize committee are left-leaning liberals because I don't know that for a fact. But to give out a prize based on the "hope" that he will do good things is laughable.

And giving the prize to Arafat was just as laughable . . . as it was when given to Al Gore.

And Rue... Stop berating Wulf. He has said several times it was not because of the color of Obama's skin that he's upset about this. It's the man's accomplisments (or lack thereof) that has him riled. I chose to take him at his word on this.

Wulf... sometimes ya just gotta roll with Rue's ineffectual punches. I got a bit of a laugh with some of your statements but she seems to have lost her sense of humor a long time ago. If she doesn't get the humor she'll call you all sorts of names and question your intellect.

Hello Rue,

I don't think anyone has placed this on par with world hunger, the plight of abused women and children, or general global sins against humanity.

There are several recipients of the award that make me shake my head. And while I will not declare this most recent inappropriate award to be the most heinous of inappropriate awards, I will neither declare it to be 'okay' since there have been worse offenses.

I do agree it is illuminating to see what arguments people bring to the table. I haven't heard anything that justifies the award. It is my opinion that most sensible people should see this event as unfortunate. It brings no glory, no honor, no attention to critical world events. It holds up no accomplished principle or practice. Instead of highlighting the struggles and travails of folks who agonize through the trenches of world peace and goodwill to their fellow man... instead of inviting the world eye to look towards the abused and valiant women's rights struggle in the east...

We have awarded someone for not being someone else.

I take no pride in this.

Negotiating with N Korea. NOT sabre-rattling towards Iran, and, in fact, indicating that the US will engage in high level talks AND stand with the world community to develop a common response. Closing down Gitmo (in the last few days more former prisoners have been released to countries willing to take them, but it takes time to negotiate all the details of all the people there.) Shutting down SDI, which was a major source of tension with Russia. Willing to discuss global warming.

The list is longer, this is just off the top of my head of items I have seen in the last week.

But in general terms, willing to bring the US to the table on items of global importance, as a partner with many, not a go-it-alone cowboy.

What I saw was that he then said the same thing would apply to Hillary Clinton simply because she is a woman. But his main point throughout all of this was that Obama has done very little to earn this award. Period. I take Wulf for what he is - a very passionate person who says what's on his mind, hang the consequences. That sometimes means flying off the handle with poor choices in words or sentence structure, but I'm not going to condemn him for that.

And this is why I say you've lost your sense of humor. Obama's two week presidency at the time of his nomination was equal, in Wulf's mind, to the accomplishment of someone tying their own shoelaces. I got a chuckle out of that. You didn't and that's okay, but it's just as okay to tell someone, "If that's your idea of a joke, I don't get it." Whether or not he got the prize is a non-issue to me. It's people's bogus arguments I find irritating. In the interim, Obama has done FAR more to foster global peace than Wulf ever has, or ever will. See my list above.

But that begs the question, Rue - WHY was he nominated? What had he done up to that point in time (the deadline) to warrant even a nomination? His accomplishments 2 weeks into his presidency? The way he ran his campaign? Or simply because he talked a good game up to that point and so they went "all in", banking on the hopes that he will do what he said he would do in a peaceful and world-changing fashion?

I thought a person was nominated for PAST accomplishments, not for what he says (and many hope) he might do in the future.

That's what irks me about the whole thing.

Yeah. Kinda hard to respond to ya when you keep going back and changing your original post.

So YOU are now equating the Nobel Peace Prize to the NFL draft? Really? Even in the draft, the best, most talented players with proven success in their college carreers are chosen first. The rest are way down on the list of choices. And those that only played quarterback for two games are probably not even included in the draft. No matter how good some folks think he might become. Heck, in the MLB most draftees are even thrown out to "farm" teams until they DO prove themselves worthy for the Big Show. They're not actually "awarded" with a slot in the major leagues until they've proven themselves worthy.

Sigh. I added to, but did not delete or change my essential point. But since I DID change it, I reposted it, as a courtesy, to you. And YOU are now in the pissy 'humorless' category b/c --- why ?
How about this: next time, I'll just skip the courtesy, OK ? Will that make you feel better ?

"So YOU are now equating the Nobel Peace Prize to the NFL draft?"

I dunno. It might be. It might not. You tell me. As I posted above "... I'll leave it to you to decide whether or not it was kosher."

All I'll say is that I contemplated putting some sort of smiley in there, but you and I have issues in the past with you not paying attention to them and getting "pissy" with me regardless. So, I didn't bother. Keep being courteous, please. Just let me know whether you'll accept the smiley when you see it as being in jest. That's all.

Sorry, Wulf, but you officially made me regret my decision to "stand up" for you. Won't happen again.

Give it a rest.

I have to unequivocally say - mostly, yes, I will.

There IS a category that doesn't pass the sniff test - for example "You're a c**t ! "

ANTHONYT

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

Wulf's tired, stale, and increasingly odious humor aside, this is not a competition between Wulf and Obama. It was a competition between Obama and more accomplished contributors to peace and the humane condition. Obama has not won that contest. But he won the award for it.

People ought to boo when the referee or judges of a match make a bad call.

To paraphrase the argument FOR the award, "Declaring an intention to behave in the way that he ought to behave" is not an accomplishment.

Much appreciated, Rue.

*EDIT* I mean for the courtesy! Don't want folk to get the wrong impression that I thought you think of me as a real man. 'Cause . . . you know . . . you probably don't think I am.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I think they gave to to that menace and war-mongerer, Henry Kissinger*, because he sounds Jewish. And then they gave to it Obama because he wasn't Kissinger.

* 'Cause, shit man, if they can give the "peace" prize somebody who was responsible for 500,000+ deaths, then I guess just NOT being Kissinger is worthy of a prize!

Here Wulf... You get one too, so don't feel left out!
