As it turns out, the total exposure of us... the middle class... to the bailout is not $700 billion. Nosiree. I was set straight by a recent article that the current exposure is more like $17 trillion. TRILLION. That includes the $700 billion in TARP money, a $1.4 trillion "loan" (gift) to AIG and Citigroup, $1 trillion "Public Private Investment Fund" program to encourage the purchase of toxic assets at 6:1, a $1.8 trillion Commercial Paper Funding Facility, $450 billion Money Market Investor Funding Facility, $940 billion in Federal contributions to the FDIC (which nornally is funded by the banks themselves) plus another $684 billion in backing, $4.4 billion in "general backing" of financial firms, the $2.2 billion purchase of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, and $905 billion into international markets and $881 billion into domestic markets. (I hope I haven't forgotten anything!)

Gorramit, this is a shitload of money!!!!

We could have PAID for all of the defaulting mortgages with money to spare! But instead, we wound up trying to staunch the hemmorrhage of every single investor's funny-money, which they multiplied eightfold each time it crossed the boundary between one firm and another.

Looking at it another way, this money could have created 25 MILLION jobs for the next ten years, paying $70,000 to each and every employee. THATS MORE THAN THE SUM TOTAL OF OUR ENTIRE UNEMPLOYMENT OF 15 MILLION!

Sheesh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Am I the only one who thinks there's something really screwy with this???

Amen. This is organized insanity, as in the definition of insanity of doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome than you got every other time. Or maybe it's disorganized insanity, being so scattershot all over the place, but either way, shovelling huge amounts of money to the people who just screwed you is raving looney tunes.

Yeah, Sig, you forgot something: The bailout money to the Auto Industry that used that money to move operations overseas. Yeah, that new GM that's gonna come out for $4,000 won't be available here, it will only be available local to their brand new plant in China.

(change I can believe in, but then again, I'm a very cynical person )

"On 24 November 2008 the U.S. government announced a massive bailout of Citigroup, designed to rescue the company from bankruptcy while giving the government a major say in its operations. The Treasury will provide another $20 billion in Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) funds in addition to $25 billion given in October. The Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) will cover 90% of the losses on its $335-billion portfolio after Citigroup absorbs the first $29 billion in losses"

This all happened before Bush left office and by the time Bush moved out Citigroup was only worth $33 billion. We could have owned the whole thing for a whole lot less than we loaned them and then...."in late 2008, Citigroup paid hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses to more than 1038 of its employees. This included 738 employees each receiving $1 million in bonuses, 176 employees each receiving $2 million bonuses, 124 each receiving $3 million in bonuses, and 143 each receiving bonuses of $4 million to more than $10 million."

SignyM, I've missed ya. There was a brief honeymoon of hope, I don't think we've agreed so much since we were both busy hating Bush

Don't hate Obama, but boy is this a disasterous policy. Gotta love those new war spending supplementals too... And everyone catch Gates gunning for the mininukes?

A few points on why Robert Gates is a lying sack of maggots:

1. There's no unique use for the bunker buster other than as a portable nuke.

2. By the pentagon's own estimates, the bunker buster can reach 3-12 feet under ground, and the Iranian nuclear facilities are 600 feet underground (somehow I find myself wondering if those matrix scenes were made to make us believe in the drilling missile.)

3. A so called bunker buster nuke carries about 12 time the payload of the bombs we used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The most effective target is generally agreed to be a civilian population, or an industrial plant, which tends to be surrounded by a civilian population.

4. So, a mininuke is a weapon that can be used to kill around 5 million, given population densities and blast radius. If the terrorists on 9-11 had used these instead of airplanes, they would have taken out half the isle of manhattan, wester long island and northern new jersey, incl. jersey city.

5. Has everyone forgotten Russia saying "If the US attacks Iran, Russia will respond in kind with whatever weapons we choose to use"? Personally, I find that a somewhat disturbing statement, given the somewhat disturbing policy we are currently using. Yes, our "missile defense systems" can launch mininukes at Iran. I wouldn't want to go down in history as the guy who incorrectly tried to call Russia's bluff.

Sorry, so far, looks to me like we have the same batsh*t crazy channel, different anchorman. I feel sorry for the dude, but he has the power, and he better start firing these psychos soon, and I'm looking at you, too, McChrystal.

You got it wrong again ....you're the asshole here. Your Obama is taking Govt intrusion to new heights. He's got his hands in everything we do, our banks, our insurance co's, car companies, what we eat & drink, and even what we think. The guy is a crybaby whiner, and a meglomaniac with an ego as big as the Chicago corruption cesspool which bred him. Wait 'til young people get their Govt. "fines" in the mail for not having mandated insurance. I'm sure they'll be "fine" with it. And when small businesses get their "fines" for not having insurance for all, I'm sure they'll just go out and hire more people, right? Is that the fucking plan? When did a Liberal Leftist EVER create one fucking job in America? Sure, go after all those that provide jobs, demonize them, and use all the power of the White House to create and attack their enemies list...And you love the Govt. take-overs of businesses, & you wet yourself over the White House media wars to demonize every iota of American strength and tradition, just as any self-rightous socialist douche like you has dreamt of all your pathetic life.

See Signy, I have read your posts, and they consistently give testimony that you are anti-Capitalism, anti-America, anti-military, anti-religion, and of course anti-Israel. What that leaves for you to actually believe in is exactly what we have now. A bunch of clueless socialists and radicals trying desperately to destroy America in every way possible, or at the very least transform America into European socialism. Funny though, those countries are now electing Conservatives in favor of the Leftists (finally), just as America is being warned by them (the French chastising us!)that we're headed down the wrong path. And by the way, let me return the favor and say FUCK YOU too.

Hello Dreamtrove,

You may have misspoken to some degree on the subject of Bunker Buster Bombs.

'Bunker Busters' were originally termed 'Earthquake bombs' and have been in use since WWII for the purpose of destroying sub-surface or hardened targets. The largest of them can penetrate 20 feet of Reinforced Concrete. The damage they cause, however, does not necessarily require complete penetration. They create devastation in surrounding ground when they explode. This is why they were called Earthquake Bombs when they were first deployed (By the British, if memory serves) in the 1940's.

There are plans for placing nuclear warheads on Bunker Busters to create massive subsurface explosions. Again, this would be useful for sub-surface or hardened targets. It would be a poor choice for the destruction of non-hardened surface targets, which are best eradicated with air-bursting nuclear munitions. (A hundred feet or more above the ground.)

Bunker Busters are absolutely the wrong types for delivering nuclear munitions to cities or surface targets. The military has no need for the MOAB Bunker Busters as a mini-nuke platform in the sense that you suggest. The US military is rife with mini-nuke delivery systems, and can drum up a warhead of desirable size to strike almost anywhere on the Earth within an hour's notice. Perhaps less.

Bunker Busters have had a verifiable and good combat use since before the first ever deployment of a nuclear weapon, and have been used in the field with conventional warheads for 60 years.

I find it telling that you would list capitalism FIRST, before America. But in any case... yep, I'm anti-capitalist.

So BTW, can you show me in the Constitution where it says our country is supposed to be capitalist? Because in all of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, nowhere do I find any statement that promotes capitalism. In fact, I haven't even found the RIGHT TO OWN PROEPRTY. I think you have your loyalties confused.

Anti-Empire. Just like the Founding Fathers. I think you have your loyalities confused.

Naturally. IMHO religion is mass insanity. Why should I endorse it? The FF thought the same about organized religion. I think you have your loyalties confused.

So??? Since when are 'we' Israel??? I think you have your loyalties confused.

It seems to me that you would have accused the Founding Fathers of the SAME things you're accusing me. Like I said: I think you have your loyalties confused. America is not a religious government. It is not Israel. It was not founded to be capitalist. It was not intended to be an empire. The exact opposite is true. Please re-read the Constitution. Once you have diabused yourself of your ignorance, and gotten your nose unstuck from capitalism's/religion's/Israel's ass, THEN you can come back and talk to me about how disloyal I am to "America".

Funny though, those countries are now electing Conservatives in favor of the Leftists (finally), just as America is being warned by them (the French chastising us!)that we're headed down the wrong path. And by the way, let me return the favor and say FUCK YOU too.
Considering the source...

Now, as to where I ACTUALLY stand...

I am for the American people. Not just the rich. I think government in general, and OUR government in particular, can have a positive role to play. I just want it to be on MY side, not hostage to moneyed interests. If you care to address my REAL concerns... instead of YOUR religiously-held beliefs in capitalism, empire, and religion... feel free. But right now, you're just straw-manning your fears.

When SNL turns on you, you should know you're in some sort of trouble. Last 2 weeks they have skewered Obama...a skit about him accomplishing none of his promises, and then the new one that mocked his Nobel Prize.

You want to sue CEOs? How 'bout we prosecute them? Where are the perp walks for the execs at Lehman Bros, AIG, Fannie Mae, Countrywide, BOA, etc etc? They either walked away with billions, or stayed on and had the Government give them billions of our tax dollars. No prosecutions that I know of....and there won't be any. Too many politicians were in bed with these crooks all the time the whole thing was exploding. Besides, the Justice Dept is too busy investigating CIA agents. And besides, if you dare speak out against Obama and his minions about what they're doing to this country, you will labeled a racist and/or a knuckle-dragging neaderthal astro-turfer. They only know how to demonize their opponents...nothing else...they are practiced executioners of the truth.

I'm still waiting for your apology to me for your vile reply to my original harmless comment. On second thought, just keep telling people to fuck themselves...that's what yer best at.
You said I was anti-American. And then you proceeded to conflate America with capitalism, Israel, empire, and religion... pretty much everything the FF would have disagreed with... and in fact, in 3 of 4 instances actively tried to eliminate from our foundation.

If the birth certificate folk can get judges ruling in their favour with the demands that Obama produce, which I'm frankly amazed was possible, then surely there must be some way to begin a formal investigation of these crooks an their government connections. These corporations just about went bankrupt, and very likely because of some of the same accounting fraud practices, record inconsistency of financial condition reporting, and stock price inflation that got Enron nabbed. We have motive, we have enough suspicious indication of wrong-doing.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Eliot Spitzer was hot on their trail, until GWB demanded that individual states NOT prosecute banks for fraud, claiming it was a Federal matter. (Effing Bush!) Maybe the best place to press for an investigation is New York's replacement Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo.

Excuse me, but Dick Cheney has been a member of this forum since February 28th? All this accusation of people being NSA spies is moot.

Actually I told you AT THE TIME that Spitzer was thrown to the wolves like that *because of what he was investigating* - did you not take me seriously ?

Folks, ALL the high end prostitutes are on the take of the alphabet boys, which work for the moneyed elite to maintain the status quo, something that should be bloody obvious by now - and Spitzer got too big for his britches and they rolled him for it, which is possible for the express reason that one of the requirements to obtain a major office in this country is the powers that be having the ability to do that to you, as the Franklin and Abramoff investigations should have made abundantly clear.

Hell, Spitzer was practically noble in that his sextoy was of legal age, willing, and paid for, putting him ahead of 90% of congress in that respect, morally.

As for what to do - well, up to you, but I think someone who screwed the american people outta millions can damn well afford to have their car rolled upside down in the street by an angry mob, for starters - any legal responsibility for an act like that is on you, however.

-Frem

PS - Not while they're in it, please, no matter how satisfyin that might be.
