Delaying formal lessons until after a child turns six, to allow them to focus on play-based learning, so those who struggle at the age of four or five are not put off for life. The government currently plans to bring forward the school starting age from five to four.

That's not a bad idea, especially if they can get at least some of the parents involved as well to ease the transition for the little ones.

And play based learning is damned effective, especially at ages 4-9 because it combines entertainment with education.

Folks mocked saturday morning cartoons even when I was a kid, but yanno what - I learned a very strong appreciation for classical music, and a damned lot of american folklore and history from bug bunny - go back and look now, and you'd be amazed at just how MUCH they managed to sneak into those cartoons back then, much as they were decried.

And seriously, folks - Bugs variation on the Barber of Seville was, and is, IMHO, every bit as excellent as a professional operas.

Tell me he doesn't rock that solid ?

It cannot be said enough, those who do not learn from history, are doomed to endlessly repeat it

Yeah, kind of misleading thread title. Actually, it's about a report than recommends that children don't start school until 6 and is critical of the national testing known as Sats.

I gather - that like here - the age you can start school is flexible, and it is possible - depending on the birthday of the child - to start at 4 (as long as they turn 5 in the next few months)

I'd agree with the report and what Frem says - I think play based learning until 7 at least - some schools actually base their curriculum on that here.

National testing happens here - for the basics - I have trouble with it as well. Although it's good to know where kids are at against national standards, it only paints a partial picture - and it doesn't really allow for the fact that kids learn at their own rate.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

"It says they have exaggerated progress, narrowed the curriculum by squeezing out space for history, music and arts, and left children stressed-out by the testing and league table system."

Sounds like 'No Child Left Behind".

When I went to England four years ago, I think I ate there!

This was before I was vegan. Very good chicken. Juicy.
