Child pornography is being sent through viruses to your computer! And you won't even know it! And your computer will become an instrument that continues to send out child pornography to the cyber world. And you won't know that either. So one day when the FBI and local sheriff comes to your house to arrest you in front of your family don't be so surprised. This is the latest "fad" going around. Your life can be destroyed by outside influences, and you will become an outcast of society. When is the internet going to be made safe and secure? If it can never be that, then how can it continue to be a force in our lives if we cannot protect ourselves from those who would use us by stealth to promote their sick interests?

So that's how you're going to explain it, huh?

Good luck with that.

Oh it gets better, Jong...

Some of that crap was done BY the damn FBI in the first place, knowing full and well that it would be misused against the innocent.

http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2008/03/web_entrapment_1.html

I mentioned it here before, but I'll tell it again, just to make sure of the point.

My secretary and girl-friday "Alice", used to be a run of the mill, boringly ordinary housewife.

Then she clicked an advert link on a recipe sharing site, and blammo, the popup window cascade of doom we all know and love, right ?
Only, the images were so horrifying to her that she totally freaked, yanked the power cord, and called the cops - who sent the feds, who arrested HER!

And despite even our best efforts, she was charged, convicted and sentenced, plus labelled a sex offender - which resulted in her being divorced, losing custody, becoming homeless and unemployable (with few enough job skills to begin with) and her whole life thrown down the tubes all at once.

The woman was honestly contemplating suicide when I drove up next to her and made a counter-offer, she still has "issues" to where the very sight of law enforcement personnel will sent her into a frenzy or panic attack.

And all for trying to REPORT a crime - because for a long time from 1995-1998 or so, the Feds opinion of the matter was that it was better to bust the person reporting it, bird in hand, than bother actually investigating it, and it had a nicely chilling effect which made the problem (the freaks going mainstream, in part thanks to AOL and other providers deliberately sheltering them) seem to go away, since no one dared report it - till marcus lawson destroyed his own career in efforts to stomp it out...

Which resulted in law enforcement throwing it onto civilian volunteers at NCMEC with no authority or ability to legally process cases or investigate them, and then firmly ignoring them, as a general rule - cause the FBI is too busy creating phony terrorism bullshit and harassing americans to actually bother.

There's been *some* progress, but not a lot.

I highly doubt the freaks themselves came up with this shit, it's too haphazard, inefficient and insecure - no, this seems either a deliberate attempt to cause a panic and "justify" even grosser abuses of the fourth amendment, which points the finger to the FBI...

Or a pre-emptive defense by someone technologically competent who's aware they are being investigated, which leads to a couple suspects I will not name here.

But seriously, given just how many ridiculous laws there are concerning computer use, should your comp be seized for any reason no matter how clean it is - you're fried anyway, somewhere in there is an image you don't have rights to, an MP3 you don't have a recipt for, even a MIDI file you did not pay the $4.95USD registration fee for (and bet you didn't know you had to, eh ?)

Not to mention I hope you kept the original install media complete with activation codes and purchase receipt for every single piece of ware on the drive - oh, what's that you say, it came as a pre-install ?
Too bad, you're gonna fry for piracy, oh well.

Seriously, the best thing you CAN do is have a physical self-destruct unit clamped to the hard drive, and activate it if necessary - there's a couple around, from spring loaded spikes, to electromag scramblers - my people even market something like it themselves, the SCRAMdrive, which is a USB stick with a self-destruct.

Simply flip the safety cover and squeeze, a small pin busts through the chip, and the packet of corrosive sitting on top to finish the job.

These days, our real worst enemy is our own so-called "protectors" - for a fact you stand a much greater chance of abuse at their hands than any terrorist or criminal.

This is no joke. We are all at risk, but I suppose you have less to fear than most. Five minutes with you, and the FBI would simply strap a straight-jacket on you and haul you off to the nut house. Blaming Bush & Cheney likely wouldn't help you either in that situation.

That is a nightmare! I use a computer at work, so maybe I get rid of my home computer which I rarely use anyhow. Thanks for the story.

Actually, I have less to fear than most for two reasons:

1) I don't surf and download child porn. It sounds like you do.

2) I'm on a Mac, so the vast majority of viruses just bounce off my screen and die. Sounds like, for all the talk about how "Macs are so much more expensive", I made the better choice, since you'll be in jail as a "short eyes", and I'll be sitting at home safely surfing the web for something that ISN'T child porn.

I guess you could always try the defense of most child porn enthusiasts, and see if that gets you any leniency from the feds: "But I'm a Republican!" Be sure and tell 'em you voted for Bush and Cheney, too. They always get a kick out of that!

DRAGO

One of the most common cries of the pedophile when they're caught is, "It wasn't me, a virus did it!" This is such a common claim that officials have pretty much been self-taught to totally ignore it, most of them mechanically countering with "Viruses don't work like that, quit lying and tell us where you got it!"

I think it's a very misanthropic irony that someone makes a virus that actually does it, which is just gonna get totally innocent people in deadly trouble. And I do mean deadly. If it gets around that someone's a baby-raping pedophile son of a bitch, well. Let's just say that things in the south have NOT improved so much that the word 'lynch' has fallen out of common vernacular. I hear the north has the same problems.

BYTEMITE

Ho boy, someone needs to give those officials a quick boot to the updater.

In the very least, some of the slickest stuff I've never seen is anti-virus/spyware pop-up ads. The game is this: some dumb schmoe gets an ad for the software that they try to close. The trick is if you click anywhere on the window, you download a malicious program that changes your browser start-up page to the anti-spyware company's website, and that opens pornographic pop-up windows whenever you load a webpage.

My dad accidentally got this once. It's simple enough to get rid of, though, you can pretty much just run a find on any new or changed programs the day you got it, then also find it in your registry and remove it.

But that was years ago, I imagine they're more sophisticated now.

So that's your answer to this? Shrug your shoulders and accept it as part of life? Sorry, I can't do that. The AP wrote the story, so I mostly believe it, especially since it seems like the next demented progression for those that thrive on causing pain and harm to others. We all have to be aware and cautious about Identity theft, and credit card fraud. Those are daunting challenges themselves...but this? ....Jesu Christo, this?? This is beyond the pale. This is something that can instantly destroy your entire family's life. I'm fortunate to have some access time of my own on the computer during work. I am getting rid of my home computer.

DREAMTROVE

Still Linux here. No complaints to date. The trick is that nothing can be done on the machine without express permission of the user, and major modifications can only be done by root. Because all Linux software is shareware, and basically does the same thing as Windows and Macintosh software which costs a fortune, every release of Linux is handily squashed by corporate america, and so the brief rash of linux netbooks, like the one I'm using now, are always a flash in the pan, replaced by some easily hacked microsoft alternative. And that's the way we like it. If you're never more that 1% of the market, you'll never be a target for such predatory activity.

Now, I didn't say that. I just think it's a bit premature to shit my pants and panic over it.

Your mileage may vary.

There's probably a virus that will download THOSE kinds of websites to your computer, too!
