Conspiracy Theories

by Cass R. Sunstein, Harvard University - Harvard Law School, January 15, 2008

Abstract: Many millions of people hold conspiracy theories; they believe that powerful people have worked together in order to withhold the truth about some important practice or some terrible event. A recent example is the belief, widespread in some parts of the world, that the attacks of 9/11 were carried out not by Al Qaeda, but by Israel or the United States. Those who subscribe to conspiracy theories may create serious risks,
including risks of violence, and the existence of such theories raises significant challenges for policy and law. The first challenge is to understand the mechanisms by which conspiracy theories prosper; the second challenge is to understand how such theories might be undermined. “The truth is out there”:1 conspiracy theories are all around us. In August 2004, a poll by Zogby International showed that 49 percent of New York City residents, with a margin of error of 3.5 percent, believed that officials of the U.S. government “knew in advance that attacks were planned on or around September 11, 2001, and that they consciously failed to act.” In a Scripps-Howard Poll in 2006, with an error margin of 4 percent, some 36 percent of respondents assented to the claim that “federal officials either participated in the attacks on the World Trade Center or took no action to stop them.” Among sober-minded Canadians, a September 2006 poll found that 22 percent believe that “the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001 had nothing to do with Osama Bin Laden and were actually a plot by influential Americans.”5 In a poll conducted in seven Muslim countries, 78 percent of respondents said that they do not believe the 9/11 attacks were carried out by Arabs.

In a 2008 article published in the Journal of Political Philosophy, Obama information czar Cass Sunstein outlined a plan for the government to stealthily infiltrate groups that pose alternative theories on historical events via “chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine” those groups.

The aim of the program would be to “(break) up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories,” wrote Sunstein, with particular reference to 9/11 truth organizations.

Sunstein pointed out that simply having people in government refute conspiracy theories wouldn’t work because they are inherently untrustworthy, making it necessary to “Enlist nongovernmental officials in the effort to rebut the theories. It might ensure that credible independent experts offer the rebuttal, rather than government officials themselves. There is a tradeoff between credibility and control, however. The price of credibility is that government cannot be seen to control the independent experts,” he wrote.

“Put into English, what Sunstein is proposing is government infiltration of groups opposing prevailing policy,” writes Marc Estrin.

“It’s easy to destroy groups with “cognitive diversity.” You just take up meeting time with arguments to the point where people don’t come back. You make protest signs which alienate 90% of colleagues. You demand revolutionary violence from pacifist groups.”

This is what Sunstein is advocating when he writes of the need to infiltrate conspiracy groups and sow seeds of distrust amongst members in order to stifle the number of new recruits. This is classic “provocateur” style infiltration that came to the fore during the Cointelpro years, an FBI program from 1956-1971 that was focused around disrupting, marginalizing and neutralizing political dissidents.

“Sunstein argued that “government might undertake (legal) tactics for breaking up the tight cognitive clusters of extremist theories.” He suggested that “government agents (and their allies) might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy theories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic or implications for political action,” reports Raw Story.

Sunstein has also called for making websites liable for comments posted in response to articles. His book, On Rumors: How Falsehoods Spread, Why We Believe Them, What Can Be Done, was criticized by some as “a blueprint for online censorship.”

From things that I've been told about Fireflyfans and the January 6th ship jump, this sounds somewhat familiar.

Odd though if Obama is supporting this same policy that we haven't heard from any of the people who left. Did they even like Firefly?

I know AuRaptor is still around, he didn't leave the boards completely, just doesn't go to RWED anymore. I don't think he was one of them.

What I heard is that some of the right wing posters who no longer post actually admitted to having low to mid-level jobs in the military. And on Obama's inauguration day, they all mysteriously disappeared and haven't been back since.

It's odd, and we don't know anything for certain about why, or if the time frame is exact, but I heard it was about that time.

Quote:

CONSPIRACY THEORIES by Cass R. Sunstein PhD, Harvard University, Harvard Law School, January 15, 2008

Of course some conspiracy theories, under our definition, have turned out to be true. The Watergate hotel room used by Democratic National Committee was, in fact, bugged by Republican officials, operating at the behest of the White House. In the 1950s, the Central Intelligence Agency did, in fact, administer LSD and related drugs under Project MKULTRA, in an effort to investigate the possibility of “mind control.” Operation Northwoods, a rumored plan by the Department of Defense to simulate acts of terrorism and to blame them on Cuba, really was proposed by high-level officials.

But we have seen that in many communities and even nations, such theories are widely held. It is not plausible to suggest that all or most members of those communities are afflicted by mental illness. The most important conspiracy theories are hardly limited to those who suffer from any kind of pathology.

Those who believe that Israel was responsible for the attacks of 9/11, or that the Central Intelligence Agency killed President Kennedy, may well be responding quite rationally to the informational signals that they receive.

How many people know, directly or on the basis of personal investigation, whether Al Qaeda was responsible for the 9/11 attacks, or whether Lee Harvey Oswald killed President Kennedy on his own, or whether a tragic death in an apparent airplane accident was truly accidental?

What can government do about conspiracy theories? Among the things it can do, what should it do? We can readily imagine a series of possible responses. (1) Government might ban conspiracy theorizing. (2) Government might impose some kind of tax, financial or otherwise, on those who disseminate such theories. (3) Government might itself engage in counterspeech, marshaling arguments to discredit conspiracy theories. (4) Government might formally hire credible private parties to engage in counterspeech. (5) Government might engage in informal communication with such parties, encouraging them to help. Each instrument has a distinctive set of potential effects, or costs and benefits, and each will have a place under imaginable conditions. However, our main policy idea is that government should engage in cognitive infiltration of the groups that produce conspiracy theories, which involves a mix of (3), (4) and (5).

We suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies (acting either virtually or in real space, and either openly or anonymously) will undermine the crippled epistemology of those who subscribe to such theories.

Some believe that the Bush administration deliberately spread a kind of false and unwarranted conspiracy theory – that Saddam Hussein conspired with Al Qaeda to support the 9/11 attacks. Suppose for discussion’s sake that this is so.

Imagine a government facing a population in which a particular conspiracy theory is becoming widespread. We will identify two basic dilemmas that recur, and consider how government should respond.

The most direct response to a dangerous conspiracy theories is censorship. The effort to censor the theory might well be taken as evidence that the theory is true, and censorship of speech is notoriously difficult. [authors arrested and books and TV shows banned by govt in USA: www.zundelsite.org, www.thelawthatneverwas.com, www.paynoincometax.com, www.piratenews.org ]

Government can partially circumvent these problems if it enlists nongovernmental officials in the effort to rebut the theories. The price of credibility is that government cannot be seen to control the independent experts. When Popular Mechanics offered its rebuttal of 9/11 conspiracy theories, conspiracists claimed that one of the
magazine’s reporters, Ben Chertoff, was the cousin of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and was spreading disinformation at the latter’s behest. [Popular Mechanics and History Channel discussed www.piratenews.org/flight93.html ]

One promising tactic is cognitive infiltration of extremist groups. By this we do not mean 1960s-style infiltration with a view to surveillance and collecting information, possibly for use in future prosecutions. Rather, we mean that government efforts might succeed in weakening or even breaking up the ideological and epistemological complexes that constitute these networks and groups. Government agents (and their allies) might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy theories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic or implications for political action.

In one variant, government agents would openly proclaim, or at least make no effort to conceal, their institutional affiliations. A recent newspaper story recounts that Arabic-speaking Muslim officials from the State Department have participated in dialogues at radical Islamist chat rooms and websites in order to ventilate arguments not usually heard among the groups that cluster around those sites, with some success. In another variant, government officials would participate anonymously or even with false identities. Each approach has distinct costs and benefits; the second is riskier but potentially brings higher returns. In the former case, where government officials participate openly as such, hard-core members of the relevant networks, communities and conspiracy-minded organizations may entirely discount what the officials say, right from the beginning. The risk with tactics of anonymous participation, conversely, is that if the tactic becomes known, any true member of the relevant groups who raises doubts may be suspected of government connections. Despite these difficulties, the two forms of cognitive infiltration offer different risk-reward mixes and are both potentially useful instruments.

There is a similar tradeoff along another dimension: whether the infiltration should occur in the real world, through physical penetration of conspiracist groups by undercover agents, or instead should occur strictly in cyberspace. The latter is safer, but potentially less productive. The former will sometimes be indispensable. Infiltration of any kind poses well-known risks: perhaps agents will be asked to perform criminal acts to prove their bona fides, or (less plausibly) will themselves become persuaded by the conspiratorial views they are supposed to be undermining; perhaps agents will be unmasked and harmed by the infiltrated group.

In 2004, the U.S. government set up a broadcast network for the Middle East – Al-Hurrah, “the Free One” – that puts out news and third-party opinion. In May 2007, a House subcommittee called a hearing to investigate reports that Al-Hurrah had broadcast “terrorist” content, including “a 68-minute call to arms against Israelis by a senior figure of the terrorist group Hezbollah; [and] deferential coverage of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s Holocaust denial conference." Legislators sharply questioned officials of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the government corporation that ultimately funds Al-Hurrah, and those officials had to promise to address the legislators’ concerns. Those problems, however, were part and parcel of a broader strategy for enhancing credibility by permitting other viewpoints and voices on the air.

A mini-scandal erupted in 2006 when U.S. newspapers revealed that the Lincoln Group, an independent contractor of “influence services,” had paid Iraqi newspapers to publish hundreds of “news stories” written by U.S. military personnel but not identified as such, most of which portrayed events in Iraq in cheery terms or rebutted circulating conspiracy theories.

A better objection to this practice may instead be tactical. By outsourcing this form of quasi-propaganda to an independent contractor whose participation would sooner or later be brought to light, the U.S. government fell between two stools, obtaining neither the credibility benefits of full transparency nor the credibility benefits of totally anonymous speech. Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former CIA case officer, commented that “[t]he historical parallel would be the [CIA’s] efforts during the Cold War to fund magazines, newspapers and journalists who believed that the West should triumph over communism. Much of what you do ought to be covert, and, certainly, if you contract it out, it isn’t.”

In 2004, the U.S. administrator for Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, ordered troops to shut down a weekly newspaper in Baghdad that had propounded false conspiracy theories damaging to the U.S., such as a story that “an American missile, not a terrorist car bomb, had caused an explosion that killed more than 50 Iraqi police recruits.”

Some conspiracy theories create serious risks. They do not merely undermine democratic debate; in extreme cases, they create or fuel violence. If government can dispel such theories, it should do so. One problem is that its efforts might be counterproductive, because efforts to rebut conspiracy theories also legitimate them. We have suggested, however, that government can minimize this effect by rebutting more rather than fewer theories, by enlisting independent groups to supply rebuttals, and by cognitive infiltration designed to break up the crippled epistemology of conspiracyminded groups and informationally isolated social networks.

FREMDFIRMA

Well, besides the fact that more than half of em were sockpuppets, often pathetically obvious ones, there was also the humiliation factor of being told to their face from about nine months prior how it was gonna go, and getting steamrollered by that while ranting and raving about how it was never gonna happen...

That whole credibility thing, combined with not being able to live it down is kinda detrimental to shovelling the party line they were, especially as they became ever more obviously racist, intolerant, and otherwise hateful up to that point.

But I think the clincher is the moral cowardice of authoritarian (Re: Bully) thinking, and without the backing of an administration and press concurrent with their agenda, they cannot drown out the endless stream of ridicule which is the real stake through the heart of that particular kind of madness.

That said, I do miss the input of some of our more conservative posters, both libertarians like Sarge and Jack, but even folks like Finn, who I might think a jackass, but one with a damned good working knowledge of history and it's impact on current events even if we individually took very different lessons from it.

I don't miss Rappy's insanity though, not gonna lie about that - but I would like to have some conservative input on relevant topics, problem with that was toward the latter years of Shrub, the concept of "conservative" got twisted into some kind of insanity, leaving a lot of folks who would be worth debating kind of adrift from a party they no longer recognized, didn't care to be associated/affiliated with, and leaving them socially and politically isolated from each other, which is a large discouragement from participating in any kind of debate, when you find yourself the lone voice and always in danger of being shouted down simply cause your concept differs from the current mainstream.

Of course, that never stopped me, but the apparent futility does discourage folk, sure.

ProTip: it's only "futile" when all you have to offer is racism, hatred and intolerance, actually having a valid point helps a lot.

Yes, the correct term is Conspiracy Factory. But Hollywood or NY would never allow a TV show or movie by that name. Use of the oxymoron "conspiracy theory" is Neuro Linguistic Programming (brainwashing). Repeat it over and over on most people will presume they thought of it themselves.

I always knew there was something about "Czar" that made my skin crawl. For one it's not an English/American word, so why the heck is a "president" calling govt employees by that name? Czar is a Russian dictator. C-zar = K-zar = Khazar = jew, makes a lot more sense.

This particular jew, Cass Sunstein, will be Obama's replacement for jew Ruth Ginsberg on US Supreme Court. Sunstein wants a ban on all guns... His video is on youtube. Sunstein says there is no constitutional right or guarantee to own firearms for self defense, nor for any other reason.

Check this out , more facts of which most Folk are unaware :

'...The name Caesar probably originated from a dialect of Latium which did not share the rhotacism of the Roman dialect.[1] (That is, the s between vowels did not change to r.) Using the Latin alphabet as it existed in the day of Julius Caesar (100 BC – 44 BC) (i.e., without lower case letters, "J", or "U"), Caesar's name is properly rendered GAIVS IVLIVS CAESAR (the spelling CAIVS is also attested and is interchangeable with the more common GAIVS; however the letter C was used with its antique pronunciation of [g], as it was an adaptation of Greek gamma). It is often seen abbreviated to C. IVLIVS CAESAR. (The letterform Æ is a ligature, which is often encountered in Latin inscriptions where it was used to save space, and is nothing more than the letters "ae".) The leading vowels in each part of the name are long, and in Classical Latin, the whole name was pronounced [ˈɡajːus ˈjuːli.us ˈkajsar], or, alternately, with praenomen pronounced [ˈɡaː.i.us]. In Greek, during Caesar's time, his name was written Καίσαρ which was pronounced more or less the same. The pronunciation of the first syllable is similar to that of the German word (Kaiser), itself an early loanword. Roman nomenclature is somewhat different from the modern English form. Gaius, Iulius, and Caesar are Caesar's praenomen, nomen, cognomen, respectively. In modern usage, his full name might be something like "Gaius Iulius-Caesar", where 'Caesar' denoted him as a member of the 'Caesarian' family branch of the 'Iulian' clan, and 'Gaius' was his personal name. Contemporary writers sometimes referred to him as "Gaius Caesar". His grand-nephew, Gaius Octavius, duly took the full name "Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus" upon his posthumous adoption in 44 BC, and the name became fused with the imperial dignity; in this sense it is preserved in the German and Bulgarian words Kaiser and Tsar (sometimes spelled Czar), both of which refer to an emperor. Compare the Hungarian, Slavic and Turkish words for "king", forms of kral, all adapted from the personal name of Charlemagne.'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymology_of_the_name_of_Julius_Caesar

'Caesar' was pronounced 'Kay-Zar'

czar

1555, from Rus. tsar, from Old Slavic tsesari, from Gothic kaisar, from Gk. kaisar, from L. Caesar. First adopted by Russian emperor Ivan IV, 1547.

The spelling with cz- is against the usage of all Slavonic languages; the word was so spelt by Herberstein, Rerum Moscovit. Commentarii, 1549, the chief early source of knowledge as to Russia in Western Europe, whence it passed into the Western Languages generally; in some of these it is now old-fashioned; the usual Ger. form is now zar; French adopted tsar during the 19th c. This also became frequent in English towards the end of that century, having been adopted by the Times newspaper as the most suitable English spelling. [OED]

The Gmc. form of the word also is the source of Finnish keisari, Estonian keisar. The transferred sense of "person with dictatorial powers" is first recorded 1866, Amer.Eng., initially in ref. to President Andrew Johnson. The fem. czarina is 1717, from It. czarina, from Ger. Zarin, fem. of Zar "czar." The Rus. fem. is tsaritsa. His son is tsarevitch, his daughter is tsarevna.

Usage of the title 'Czar' is a violation of Constitutional Law...

If ScamBO were an actual scholar of the Constitution , he would disavow the term...

'...No title of nobility shall be granted by the United States: and no person holding any office of profit or trust under them, shall, without the consent of the Congress, accept of any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.' ---Article 1 , Section 9

I wasn't here when "they" were, those you've mentioned, and I, too, would like some rational conservatives here to give opposing views; my exchanges with same elsewhere have given me a view into a different mentality, different ways of looking at things, and have even changed my mind from time to time. I wouldn't be caught dead on a forum dedicated specifically to politics--it would most likely either be dominated by one side or the other. Here I have found people of all different attitudes, but the derth of civil conservatives is something I'm saddened by. The only other place I encountered conservatives was the site I left to come here, and at that site they were downright vicious and RAN the place; any suggestion of thinking differently was attacked and quashed.

In other words, I wish we could get some conservatives as intelligent and articulate as the people I have met here. It would make for interesting debates and I'd learn things.

There IS a difference between conspiracy theory and conspiracy -- I don't even feel the need to call it "conspiracy fact"; if it is one, then it doesn't need a modifier. But there are also a lot of nutbags out there who have theories of conspiracies which AREN'T; calling them theories is perfectly acceptable, as far as I'm concerned, until I, for one, am convinced they're not.

Niki: Geezer is pretty civil, intelligent, and conservative, though sometimes he gets into it with Rue and Sig. RIPWash is also a nice guy. Neither come around much anymore, though, because I think they feel the support for conservatives is gone. Not really, but can't change what they feel.

Fact is, most people are civil if you know what their buttons are. Pushing buttons really means you've just stumbled on something that person thinks they need to defend. Often there's a valid reason they can give for this same defense. If you can find the root valid reason, and concede it, you can disarm the button and begin to discuss and debate details of their position you don't agree with.

But, you do have to be careful. Sometimes some people get their buttons pushed so much, either by people who like to poke at them to watch the reaction, or by their personal choices in listening/viewing material, that they pretty much become wind-up toys, and it's not so much a button anymore but a switch that's always in the on position. It's not easy to get close to such people unless they perceive you as being exactly like them, and sometimes their life experience has been uncommonly difficult, such that very few people can relate to things in the same way.

Knock away...

By the way , your little chart very effectively reinforces my points...

Especially since it begins with FDR .

He was a bankster install .

Just because something has been done a particular way for a long time , doesn't make it Lawful or Constitutional...

Witness the Federal Reserve 'Act' , as one example...And , its corresponding collection/enforcement scheme , the Internal Revenue Service...

Both originated in 1913...Coincidence ?

Not at all...

Less than 20 years after the Acts of 1913 , the Money Masters installed their pResident-sElect , Franklin Roosevelt...

One of his very first acts was to initiate a bankster holiday...

Then , recalled from The People , their Constitutionally-guaranteed Lawful Money , Gold...

Care to help audit what has happened to that gold ?

Bankster crooks have even stooped to stealing the copper from pennies...'Strategic' Metals , indeed .

They are now only 2.5 percent copper...

But , if they can get people to call a piece of cotton rag a 'dollar' , AND charge them compounding interest on it in perpetuity , what else will be impossible for them ?

So what is your correct way to run things currency-wise? I really don't want to carry live chickens around with me to *buy* motor oil. I prefer not to have gold on hand because people with guns might find out and I get little enough sleep as it is. And if they've been running the show since 1913 and all they got is stealing copper from pennies I'm afraid I'm not too concerned.
Tell me a better way or why this is a great concern and I'm all ears.

Correct and Legal , Constitutionally ?

Start with the Coinage Act of 1792 .
http://www.constitution.org/uslaw/coinage1792.txt

I think you've missed some detail...Stealing the copper from pennies is only one of the latest profitable schemes...Wasn't long ago , copper was $3 a pound , wholesale...

One has to understand how markets are manipulated , and how many events of shortages and scarcity are created intentionally .

As for 'Lawful Money' , you don't have any , save for what precious metal coin you may have around :

'...Any paper Money, which is not backed by something with intrinsic value, is always subject to becoming worthless once those using it begin to lose confidence in it. This was the case in the American colonies before and immediately after the American Revolution. It is also the reason that the Constitution of the resulting nation went to significant lengths to establish a national currency which was backed by tangible assets. It is also the gist of those Jeffersonian Concerns which dealt with the dangers of a Central Bank (as in The Federal Reserve), and the incompatibility of being free and in debt.

In the United States of America, paper money is illegal and unconstitutional. Article 1, Section 10, of the Constitution for the United States of America states, in part:

“No State shall.. make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in payment of Debts.”

The United States Code, Title 12, Section 152, states: “Lawful money shall be construed to mean gold or silver coin of the United States.”

Money is in fact defined as: “Coin, stamped metal; any piece of metal usually gold, silver, or copper stamped by public authority.” Bouvier’s Law Dictionary [1870, page 192] makes the definition even simpler: “Gold and silver coins. The common medium of exchange in a civilized nation.” '

http://www.halexandria.org/dward299.htm

'What Does Lawful Money Mean?

...Any form of currency issued by the United States Treasury and not the Federal Reserve System, including gold and silver coins, Treasury notes, and Treasury bonds. Lawful money stands in contrast to fiat money, to which the government assigns value although it has no intrinsic value of its own and is not backed by reserves. Fiat money includes legal tender such as paper money, checks, drafts and bank notes.

Also known as "specie", which means "in actual form."

Investopedia explains Lawful Money

Oddly enough, the dollar bills that we carry around in our wallets are not considered lawful money. The notation on the bottom of a U.S. dollar bill reads "Legal Tender for All Debts, Public and Private", and is issued by the U.S. Federal Reserve, not the U.S. Treasury. Legal tender can be exchanged for an equivalent amount of lawful money, but effects such as inflation can change the value of fiat money.'

http://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/lawfulmoney.asp

Coinage Act prescribes death for those debasing the currency :

'...And be it further enacted, That if any of the gold or silver coins which shall be struck or coined at the said mint shall be debased or made worse as to the proportion of the fine gold or fine silver therein contained, or shall be of less weight or value than the same out to be pursuant to the directions of this act, through the default or with the connivance of any of the officers or persons who shall be employed at the said mint, for the purpose of profit or gain, or otherwise with a fraudulent intent, and if any of the said officers or persons shall embezzle any of the metals which shall at any time be committed to their charge for the purpose of being coined, or any of the coins which shall be struck or coined at the said mint, every such officer or person who shall commit any or either of the said offenses, shall be deemed guilty of felony, and shall suffer death.

Webmaster's Commentary:
The Federal Reserve debased our currency. Take a look at your coinage. See any gold or silver there?

The founders of this nation knew that banks left to themselves, would substitute cheap metal tokens for real money. They had seen it happen in England, and they saw the results; massive unemployment and poverty for the people.

So the Founders created a monetary system based on government-issued currency of fixed real value, for the use of the people without interest. And the United States flourished.

Then the bankers wormed their way back into the system, bought the Congress and a President, replaced the government issued public currency
with currency borrowed from their banks at interest...and debased the gold and silver coinage.

By that last act, every member of the Federal Reserve system (and their enablers in Congress and the Treasury) is in violation of Section 19 of the coinage act of 1792.'

Question is , " How much Fraud are you willing to tolerate ? "

"...What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires - desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way."
-- Bertrand Russell, philosopher - "Roads to Freedom"

Still 'all ears' ? Hope you've got the time , 'cause for certain you ain't got much money :

Mmm. The problem with an actual metal standard, while definitely more stable than a paper of electronic system being that it's actually based on something is that ultimately even metal only has value such as people are willing to give it. In really hard times, it's only worth ultimately is melting down into weapons.

Food goods and water, on the other hand, are always essential. I suspect that's why barter systems lasted so long. It's very difficult to devalue something someone needs.

Though even that I don't think is the BEST system, but it could make for a good placeholder if someone needed to operate independently of their community. The real trick with a libertarian or anarchist system will be finding a way to balance life and social improvements while maintaining a healthy respect for privacy, choice, and independence.

I'm reasonably sure agriculture by hand has been done in primitive times. Particularly during said barter economy. If you're going to make that argument, you'd also have to make an argument about the economic worth of an economy based on millstones, mortars, and pestles. Or wood, stone, and bone. The fact is, we still can't eat or drink metal. We only made economies based on it because they make better weapons than the other materials and because it's shiny.

But during the copper, bronze, they all started out first with weapons and then MONEY of that type, until they figured out how to smelt gold, silver, etc. When people first figured out how to smelt aluminum from bauxite it was worth more than gold and silver and the very rich made utensils out of it, even though regular old steel and iron are far better materials for that.

Though granted, gold and silver make crappy weapons unless you're pouring the melted stuff on people. Though I bet silver and gold bullets could still break skin. Might even spread out on impact, like those bullets with the rubber heads that have a bigger exit wound than entry.

During the American revolution, people had a surprising amount of lead and pewter decorations to melt down for shot.

Yep , I'm familiar with a more-than-average amount of History...

Takes lots of energy to melt any of those...as it also does to extract them from the ground , or smelt , refine , and cast them...

That's one reason they're valued...As with agriculture , they take lots of energy to extract something useful from the ground...

No need to debate the history , we've done it before , but I'm betting you missed it...

Decentralize your power , production , and food supply...It will help you survive in the long term...

No, I agree with the last part, but it's the fact that it takes so much energy - heat energy - to smelt and refine metals that's why I'm more dubious about how useful they're going to be in a serious survival situation. If no one has a forge hot enough to smelt it into what you need, then what good is it? But agriculture just takes human energy, which even in a survival situation is somewhat more abundant.

Survivors recycle...

Besides , building a forge is actually very easy...

It takes a lot less time than establishing agriculture from the ground up...

Without agriculture , human energy is going to last about 3 days for the majority...

A couple of weeks at best , for true survivors .

If one does not have weapons , how to defend the produce that results from agriculture ?

Slaves waiting for the last roundup , unfortunately , is what most people happen to be...

The econ-bomb that has been set off may work slowly , but it'll set us back to 1890 if we're fortunate , 1860 if we're not so much...

Well, that's assuming there's no scavenging of wild plants. But, point, anyone who relies on going to the supermarket and fighting people off a can of beans isn't going to make it long. And anyone who can't defend themselves is likely to have any food they have (or are trying to establish) taken away from them.

People who have pre-established agriculture will have a major advantage though, even over people who have weapons. if the people who have weapons are smart, they'll agree to spare the life of the person who knows how to tend the crops and help to protect the crops in exchange for a share.

I suppose if you're really smart, you'd try to have both.

Can't really count on most Folk being that smart , though it's nice to imagine that it's possible...I don't count on Folk acting in enlightened self-interest , 'enlightened' being the operative term in this case...Mainly because most Folk don't operate that way now , and there are plenty of examples from past history where they also didn't...

I agree about the 'really smart' point , though...

Cass Sunstein also has strongly pushed for the removal of organs from deceased individuals who did not explicitly consent to becoming organ donors. In his 2008 book, 'Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth and Happiness,' Sunstein and co-author Richard Thaler discussed multiple legal scenarios regarding organ donation. One possibility presented in the book, termed by Sunstein as "routine removal," posits that 'the state owns the rights to body parts of people who are dead or in certain hopeless conditions, and it can remove their organs without asking anyone's permission.'"

Shipman was sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2000 for the murder of 15 female patients between 1975 and 1998, and faced no prospect of parole. Two years later an inquiry concluded that he was responsible for the deaths by lethal injection of at least another 200 mostly female and elderly patients at his greater Manchester area practice. "We believe that within a period of five to ten years, it would be possible to produce a synthetic biological agent that does not naturally exist and for which no natural immunity could have been acquired. Within the next five to ten years, it would probably be possible to make a new infective microorganism which could be different in certain important aspects from any known disease-causing organism. Most importantly, it might be damaging to the immunological and therapeutic processes upon which we depend to maintain our relative freedom from infectious disease. A research program to explore feasibility could be completed in approximately five years at a cost of $10 million.
