Given things others have said about Haiti's situation in the past, and looking forward to it's rebuilding in the future, I like this idea:

Quote:

Paris Club urges creditor nations to cancel Haiti's debts

The Paris Club of creditor nations urged all of Haiti's bilateral lenders on Tuesday to cancel the earthquake-stricken nation's debt.

Paris Club members agreed in July to cancel their claims on Haiti, totaling $214 million, though some countries have yet to finalize the process. The Paris Club is an informal group of creditor governments from industrialized countries, and those who were owed money by Haiti are Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain and the U.S.

The Paris Club "calls upon other bilateral creditors also to urgently provide full debt cancellation to Haiti," considering the financing needs the Caribbean country faces in rebuilding, it said in a statement.

Haiti's primary bilateral debt outside the Paris Club is $167 million owed to Venezuela and $91 million owed to Taiwan, according to the IMF.

Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou said Tuesday that Taiwan will consider canceling debts from earthquake-ravaged Haiti, a move that could add to Taipei's cachet in a region where rival China is making inroads.

"I have already asked the Foreign Ministry to conduct the necessary reviews to help Haiti to pass through this difficult time," he said in Taipei.

Yeah, if only. Debt collectors are usually scum though.

Education is probably their best best, education and fixing the ecological disaster of all the good farmable soil getting eroded away. Haiti's in such a location that if the soil was somehow enriched again, it has really good growing seasons.

Yup, I agree about education...but it doesn't produce oil or money, so anyone want to take bets on whether it happens? Maybe if their debts were forgiven (and it's kinda neat that France is suggesting it, since their "reparations" are kind of what started the debt Haiti's been in ever since), they can turn their attention to education...who knows?

I find it mindboggling that the slaves had to go into debt to pay for their own freedom! Weird world...

Especially since they won that revolution. I think.

Who'd have expected China and India to catch up to the US education wise in recent years? With the advent of the internet, I think maybe not having much money isn't a hindrance to a world class education anymore.

Oh, my, wouldn't that be nice. But I think having a WORKING GOVERNMENT might be a precursor to that...and living on something other than subsistence. Wonder what the number of households having computers was in Haiti?

Yes, they "won" their freedom, if you don't count that they've been paying for it ever since!
