The economy is so bad, Verizon fired 36,000 employees, lost $653 million last quarter.

The economy is so bad that I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.

The economy is so bad that CEO’s are now playing miniature golf.

The economy is so bad if the bank returns your check marked “Insufficient Funds,” you call them and ask if they meant you or them.

The economy is so bad Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM.

The economy is so bad Obama met with three small businesses to discuss the Stimulus Package: GE, Pfizer, and JP Morgan.

The economy is so bad parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children’s names.

The economy is so bad Motel Six won’t leave the light on anymore.

The economy is so bad the Mafia is laying off judges.

The economy is so bad Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.

The economy is so bad Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 Congressmen.

It’s so bad, I ordered a burger at McDonalds and the kid behind the counter asked, “Can you afford fries with that?”

Is the economy really that bad? Depends on whose doing the reporting I suppose, but it's a fact that:
90% of people are employed
93% of people are paying their mortgages on time
Real estate sales are up and increasing
Property values have stabilized and are coming back
GDP is up
Most economic sectors' securities are up or stable

I see mainly the Federal Govt.'s and some States' deficit and debt as the biggest problems. But we've experienced that before, and we've seen the economy come back time and again. Don't sell your comic books just yet.

Verizon is finally pushing the fact that FIOS is now being installed in my neighborhood.
They been advertising special deals on the thing for, like, 2 years. And I remember, almost 2 years ago, they hung miles of new fibre-optic cable on my main street, and had a guy blocking traffic for 3 days in my alley, splicing the stuff. I called them and asked, repeatedly, when I could upgrade my phone and internet to FIOS, and was told,"It's coming soon to your neighborhood." So I went out with my Christmas bonus and signed up for the local CABLE phone, TV and Internet service. Not that a cable company is really a lot better, but they offered the service I want, available, at a beter prce.
Verizon was a day late and a dollar short. If they're going in the tank, it's because they got as dumb, greedy and lazy, not to mention monopolistic, as a lot of other big American companies, and they totally deserve what they get.

Other than that, nice collection of jokes...

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Just to play devil's advocate, JS:

--90% of people are employed -- not necessarily. I believe unemployment figures don't count people who've given up looking for work as well as people who are working part-time, which isn't enough to sustain them. I think that's been well enough known to be almost a joke for a long time.

--93% of people are paying their mortgages on time -- that doesn't show how many are barely doing so, how many are using up their savings to do so, how hard or how many jobs people are having to work to stay above water; those figures might give a more accurate picture.

--Real estate sales are up and increasing -- how much of that is due to stimulus effects, such as the first-time-buyer thing and various subsidies? And given HOW low real estate sales have been, is "up" not a relative thing?

--Property values have stabilized and are coming back -- I'm not sure how much I trust that, but regardless: again, they've been SO low, partly because banks just gave up on foreclosed homes; if people are able to buy those foreclosed homes at a discount because of the economic mess, certainly that would bring "property values" up, wouldn't it? Doesn't mean things are stable.

--GDP is up. That's pretty recent, isn't it?

--Most economic sectors' securities are up or stable -- I'd need some cites on that to agree.

The biggest question really is, how much of all of this is due to the stimulus and other things which either might not be without them or might react negatively once there's no more stimulus.

I can tell you that in this city, in one of the richest counties in California, I have seen more long-existing businesses fold than in the 30+ years we've lived here, and another high number of businesses move into lower-cost locations. It's unprecedented, and it's not just California.

I'm afraid I don't see the rosy picture you seem to, and think we have a long ways to go for things to start looking as good as what you see.

I'm a Conservative, no fan of Obama and Dems, but I try to be fair most of the time. I wrote the post with an optimistic point of view, desiring not to bash Obama as so many of my Conservative brethren do every day. Sure numbers can be manipulated, but the numbers I listed are out there. These days I'd think Dems might be looking for optimism in respect to their results.

I agree with the devil's advocate on this one. :) Good points.

Hershey Candy is doing quite well though, but is that because the economy is improving or are depressed unemployed or underemployed people eating more comfort food? I guess it also helps when you raise your prices.

But no. I dont give you shit for lumping people together. People here give ME shit for doing that... you know...

I give YOU shit for your, and YOURS ALONE beliefs...

Well, let's see, Wulfie -

You DON'T lump people together? Really? You give ME shit for my beliefs, and my beliefs alone? Really?

So I'm an old hippie (okay, not THAT old). You assume I don't have a job and live in my mom's basement. Or at least that's the group you'd lump me into.

Truth be told, I haven't been without a job since I was 13. And I was working full-time and sneaking into and out of high school to do it when I was 16. And I was working THREE jobs when I was 20 (one 8-5 M-F, one 6-midnight M-F, and then I'd do double shifts on Saturday and Sunday at a restaurant). Now, almost 30 years later, I'm down to only one job, about 50 hours a week.

And sorry to disappoint, but I bathe every day. Sometimes twice a day, since it can be a sweaty job (once in the morning, once when I get home). And I can't tolerate patchouli oil.

And I've been on my own since I was 16, too. No basement living for me, sorry.

I'm sure none of that will shatter your illusions of hippies. Neither will their anti-authority stances, which you sometimes claim to share.

Normally I try to treat people fairly and not prejudge them because that is the way I like to be treated. But, I have identified myself as being a hippie on this list, so I am going to take this hatred of yours personally this time.

I would argue that you tend to lump people together into categories without understanding the intricacies involved, but others better than I have tried to make that point and obviously it has not made a bit of difference.

So I just have, HAVE to make a crack and say, "I think you have a little problem with your brain being missing."

You seem to go out of your way to set yourself up for this.

He has no job because there's no construction business. He can't pay his mortgage because he's spending $2,500 co-pay every visit to the doctor for his wife's chemo, but bank won't foreclose because the property is so far upside down.

My mom's house is paid for, but her doctors and her husband's doctors will try to steal it, as co-payment for murdering him, and for her parkinson's caused by side effect to other meds.

A security system salegirl told me she closed on her mortgage this week. Bank demanded mortgage insurance even with 20% down, because in 12 months they will be upside down, and bank can instantly foreclose despite never missing a payment.

The Mathematics of Rule

A mathematical proof of the relationship between productive activity and survival of society is derived. This is the most basic law of economics and civilization, which is suppressed and strategically denied by the economics "profession" worldwide, in a futile attempt to obscure the truth and defraud mankind of any possibility of freedom or survival.

I think I am about done with RWED. I am to frakin' sensitive. not a good match. I was standing up to some pretty virulent hatred and then the implication of bitching and moaning.

Also, optimism is good and it's good to hope. I just don't happen to agree that the economy is getting better. I'm plenty optimistic in other areas.

That is all.

The RWED has evolved much in recent times. It is actually much better now in terms of civility and content. You may not be able to see that, being relatively new here, but it is. For one thing, there are far far less participants here every day, so your words have greater meaning now than in the past. Sometimes folks here will just ignore you, sometimes agree, and sometimes challenge what you write. The degree of nastiness and ideological blindness has lessened. If you want to get something out of this forum you have to be able to give AND take. I came on board a few years ago as a pure 100% ideologue. So did others. Some have dropped out because they could not handle other's opinions or criticism, and some have stuck with it. Why, you may ask? I've asked that myself many times over the years, especially at times when I perhaps was raked over the coals, insulted, mocked, scoffed, and be-bopped. I stay and persevere because it's fun and informative. There are very few avenues of communication out there where Conservatives AND Liberals can engage each other directly. Usually, other sites are geared towards one or the other, and the blogs just reflect the unity of the group's common beliefs. Pretty boring if you ask me. Here, everything is discussed and debated. I like that. People that have endured here and that have my respect are people that are not afraid to occasionally admit that they may have been wrong about something.

At my father-in-law's murder/funeral last week, his friend told us his 35-acre home on the lake is valued at $1.5-million, but nobody will buy it for $750,000.

All is Hell.

Lots of sad stories out there, but I suspect there are usually more details to these stories than are ever revealed. No doubt things will get better, they always do. In the meantime, you take positive action to deal with the realities in your life. Ultimately, no one can help you except yourself. The sooner you realize that the better. Hate-mongering, fear-mongering, and blind ideology accomplish nothing. Our country is not perfect, but it's the only one we got.

Hey PN, how 'bout using your talent, ability, and time for positive things? A person like you, with seemingly endless resources and a strong desire to promulgate news, should be helping and educating people. Instead you relish and spread the fear and the hate and the lies. Everything you do adds up to a big nothing. It's not that hard to adapt a new approach. Try it, you may be pleasantly surprised that you can indeed make a difference in peoples' lives for the better.

Yes, those books - though I inadvertently posted that here - too many browser windows open!

I agree with what Jongs and others have said. You have a different voice, it's great to have it added to the mix.
Personally, I'd much prefer to talk to people face to face, that's a medium I'm much more comfortable with. Posting? Text? It's a continuous experiment with the temptation always to stop. But this is such a unique form that I keep getting pulled back, partly to show support for the show and partly to show support for the site/members who post and some of it for simple self expression.

Oh, it's not a problem at all, Jongs. We've had our differences, but they've almost always been along party lines. As you say, you came here as a bit of an idealogue, and I did the same, but from the other end of the spectrum.

And it only took two disastrous presidencies to bring us nearer to the middle! :)

You became disenchanted and disillusioned by Bush, and I've become the same over Obama. Maybe history will be kinder to Bush in time, and maybe Obama can pull his head out in time to avoid a complete muck-up of the job. Meanwhile, we soldier on, and we'll bicker here and there, but at the end of the day, we'll still be wearing the same color coat as always. At least, I hope so. My coat is brown; I assume yours is as well. :)

Bingo, Little. Same reason precisely that movies make more money during depressions—people seek comfort, escape, whatever little things they can find to make them feel better. And of course we know chocolate raises our serotonin levil…

Sigh, Wulf, there you go again. Got news for you:

It’s the exigencies of YUPPIES who put us in the state we’re in—-you know, the generations who followed hippies? HIPPIES are in their fifties and sixties, they got out long ago and are now supporting THEIR kids; your hatred is a few decades behind the times. The youngsters today living with their parents are a reflection of a society where “making it” is harder and harder…and by the way, that’s been going on all over the world for ages, long before us, we’re just coming into it late because we were a rich nation for longer. It has been expected that young people would live with their parents longer in England, and other places. At LEAST leave off the hippies unless you can rage against them with a tiny bit of reality.

Chris, I agree with part of what you said; Currently, yes; unemployment going away, but less hours & less pay. I don’t think it necessarily reflects a future that’s secure and financially restrained. I agree, however, that the "American way of life" is forever changed. I, too, have a bit of hope left still, and am turning that hope to the possibility that we are turning, if we haven’t yet quite turned, the corner. Time only will tell.

Yes, Little, it can get ugly down here, and if it’s not good for you, you need to take care of YOU first. At the same time, by now you must have seen that the majority of people in RWED are bright people who are willing to debate honestly; those who have no argument so just throw stones, or are so defensive of their argument that they can only hurl personal vitriol, are in the minority, and the rest put them in their place fairly regularly. No place is 100% safe, and unless you want to do nothing but “play”, the only place to find honest discussions about our world and to learn and grow are places like this. We do our best to protect you, and believe me, there is FAR worse out there! I came from one of those worse places, and this is like a love fest in comparison. Only you can decide what’s worth it for you. For me, it’s an absolute joy to be here and find so many intelligent, KNOWLEDGEABLE people who see past the fantasies and narrow-minded propaganda out there.

I certainly understand what you mean about zipping by, sometimes it makes my head spin! Mostly it makes it so I have to write these long, rambling posts in order to catch up—the next time I come here, do it again! I hate writing so long, believe it or not, because I know how hard it is for ME to read long posts, but I don’t know how to do otherwise if I want to stay up with the discussions! It’s more than worth it, to me; you have to decide for you. But personally I think you being here improves the place; every voice of sense, compassion and curiosity enhances the rest of us.

I would also add: “Everything JS said about this forum”
