'Socialism' as a term has been used so much by intellectually dishonest people in the U.S that it virtually has no meaning now... So what can you draw from this poll?

It's possible to have a positive view of European style 'socialism' (or 'welfarism'), and yet despise marxism - as I do.

Yup KPO, absolutely. Do those polled know what socialism really MEANS, or what it's COME TO MEAN in popular language. I would guess the latter, myself. The right-wing nutbags have called Obama and the Dems everything from Marxists to Nazis to who knows what else, and most of them have no actual concept of what the terms mean.

I don't think many even connect Socialism with Marxism--visceral terms just get born and then used to get visceral reactions, and their meanings get lost in time.

The exact phraseology of the question was "Just off the top of your head, would you say you have a positive or negative image of the following?" Socialism is one of the "following". That question is ridiculous, especially phrased "just off the top of your head"!

"Capitalism" got a much higher rating among Republicans than Democrats--do any of them truly know what "Capitalism" means?
