Here are the demands the Republicans set forth before they'll engage in Obama's proposed televised health care meetings:

Quote:

Scrap the House and Senate health care bills

Never use budget reconciliation for health care

Post all ideas he will propose at the summit online 72 hours before the summit

Invite Democrats who opposed the bill to the summit

Invite state legislators who oppose the bill to the summit

Invite actuaries from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services

Invite members from the Congressional Budget Office

Allow Republicans to invite an unspecified list of other health care experts.

Invite labor leaders only on the condition that you call their participation in the process "sweetheart deals."

Broadcast on television all discussions President Obama has on health care with anyone ever.

Nothing like pretending to want bipartisanship with demands that will probably preclude any discussion!

It seems obvious to me that this is just another delaying tactic, and if said meeting were ever to occur, it would only provide yet one more way to delay-delay-delay health care reform, nothing more.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Hell, why stop there? Why not demand the release of all political prisoners from the prisons, a fully fueled 747, and a pallet containing $750 billion in small-denomination, unmarked bills?

I mean, if they're doing extortion and hostage-taking, they could at least be honest about it.

Or, how about scrapping the whole thing... and working on INSURANCE reform? If at all... because quite honestly, I think this thing has been a waste of time (and our money).

You know... just an idea.

BYTEMITE

The only insurance reform I support anymore is to completely kill the current industry. Just flat out, no one buys from them, government doesn't help them, and they die out.

Then maybe small-scale local insurance business and co-ops can grow up again.

Actually, come to think of it, I feel the same way about national banks versus local lenders and credit unions.

Either way, WEED CONTROL. If necessary, upgrade from herbicide to gasoline.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

NIKI: I think Obama should tell folks what the Republicans want, extend the hand one more time for a fair discussion, and then tell the Repubs to go fuck themselves if they can't meet on a level playing field.

BYTE: BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

WULF: Congress could have- maybe should have- and possibly will- pass health care reform piece by piece. The problem with omnibus bills... yanno, the ones crafted with something for everyone... is that bad ideas get blended in with the good. So, if Congress were to be presented with ONE bill which says: 90% of premiums have to go to patient care... who the frak would vote against THAT? Then if Congress were to be presented with a bill that said: No insurance companies can deny coverage on the basis of preexisting conditions, rescind coverage, or delay treatment, who the frak would vote against THAT?

Step by step, it could get done. Curious as to what kind of legislation YOU would support.

Fascinating: I agree with everyone!

Mike's is funniest--and I'm surprised no comedian/pundit has come up with it yet.

Wulf's I agree with in theory, but I think if they quit now, it would be lost--these demands are just another delay tactic; but in theory, oh, yes, don't I WISH!

I love both of Byte's too, again in theory (and I've had all my money, such as it is, in a local bank for decades). Neither is practical, but "yes!"

Sig I agree with wholeheartedly:

I just wish Obama had the sense (or whatever it is he's missing that lets him keep trying for bipartisanship!) to do as you suggest.

Good thoughts all, thanx!
