Cyber Attack Simulates Government Shutdown

A fake cyber attack is slated to cripple a simulated federal government today, but the results should impart real lessons.

"The Atlantic's" Marc Ambinder reports that a group called the Bipartisan Policy Center is coordinating the massive assault at 10 a.m., Eastern time.

Former top-level officials from both Republican and Democratic presidential administrations will be re-creating familiar roles as Director of National Intelligence, Secretary of Homeland Security and White House Homeland Security Advisor.

They'll be meeting in a mock-up of the White House situation room at Washington, DC's Mandarin Oriental Hotel.

The real FBI will be monitoring events, as will CNN and other news organizations, who've been told they can carry the event live.

Participants have no idea what they're in for, and the scenarios have been written up by Hollywood screenwriters with help from cyber security experts.

It's being funded both by defense contractors, such as General Dynamics, and by Internet companies, such as PayPal.

The federal government has staged fake cyber attacks before, but this will be the first that plays out in public.
