So, to continue in earnest, how do you think food production might suffer in this era of climate change?
Personally, I fear that crop failure (particularly in the third world) poses a definite threat.

Ahh... home internet with all its blissful radio stations. For the first time in months, I have my groovesalad! Love it.

Anyway, Chris, first a disclaimer - climate change is not what I do. Most of what I know came from a bit of reading here and there. But the reading was recommended by an MIT trained physicist and army officer who taught physics at Westpoint. Sharp fucking guy and no mistake. He took up climate change as a hobby in the mid 90s. This guy is no liberal pansy, and he tells all kinds of stories about the chase he's put into trying to nail down the data and the science behind it. He sees the BS and the bad science as clearly as any Faux reporter, and more so because he actually understands the history and the people behind the messy side of it.

He started a doubter, but he's found some stuff that he couldn't dismiss, and it's been enlightening to me as well. Long story short, the natural cycle of ice ages is different this time around. Undeniably. Ice core data, orbital models, and geologic data show that at this point in the cycle ice sheets should be growing on Baffin Island in Canada as we head into another ice age. Instead, they're disappearing.

So - global warming bad? A little greenhouse effect is actually rather nice. Without it, Earth would be below freezing. Not so fun. And I'd really rather have my great-great-great-great... great-grandkids not living in an ice age.

But what exactly do we have instead? How about that food production? Honestly, who the hell knows. What we do know is that we have more greenhouses gases in the atmosphere than we ever have, and these molecules trap heat, and heat is energy that can do work - as in the physics definition of work. It can evaporate water, move air masses, drop the water, melt ice, affect ocean currents...

So, despite Rappy's rather naive ideas, "global warming" does not mean that everyone gets the same 2 degree increase and yay more beach time. The climate is a chaotic system, and it's not possible to forecast exactly what will happen with all this additional trapped energy.

It seems likely that we will have shifts in patterns and more extremes, both hot and cold. Perhaps the Sahara will get rain. Perhaps someone else won't. Perhaps the monsoon cycle (which has been tied to methane release) will be affected. Perhaps the ocean currents will shift, in which case Gods help Europe. Perhaps ocean levels will rise, in which case Gods help all of us.

I don't think Mother Earth will die or anything. Mother Earth can handle change. Us? Not so much. Any serious change of weather patterns will have dire effects on those with little infrastructure, as they don't have the back-up plans that others do. I do think rainfall patterns will change, and that might be hell on third world countries. Or - who knows - maybe the central US will go dust bowl and we'll be relying on new croplands in Africa. It could happen.

Which is a long way of not giving you an answer. But I would doubt anyone claiming to have specific answers about climate change. It's in the science: the atmosphere is a chaotic system. It is impossible to predict.

But the effects are what's debatable. There is no doubt at all that things on Earth are different this inter-glacial period, and the only thing that can be blamed is the human race.

Hmm. I could go on about time scales, but I want to watch some Olympics. I got the damned cable TV just so I could catch the Games after all!

My dads place is pretty small considering, but every little bit to keep the top soil from blowing away helps everybody...

200 trees and bushs were not so hard to plant, its keeping them watered for the first year... pain in the ass, but worth it.

The program was a result of studys done on the effects of erosion during the thirtys... learn from history you know

Look at what happened to at agriculture in Haiti as an example, they were the best place in the hemisphere to grow things at one time... then foreign companys mostly came in and timbered the windbreaks out, the topsoil blew away and the land became gullyied...

That was 1900, 1910 and they are still screwed up by it today...

I just caught the end of them spanking Switzerland today. Yeah, I love women's hockey. The ice is so much bigger, they have room to skate. It gets frustrating watching the men, where talented skaters can't show their stuff because they go two steps and get slammed. OK, which is also entertaining in its way, but does get old.

Hey! I kinda have to disagree with you on that one, Chris. My grandpa's farm had SEVERAL windbreaks, which he said the government had taught them how to do, and why, during the Great Depression, to keep the Dustbowl from spreading more than it had. His place was in Nebraska. (Well, not really *was* - it still is, only he's not there anymore)

But yeah, we at least used to TRY to plan.

Hotter or colder depends mostly on how oceanic thermohaline circulation is driven. You could end up warming the oceans a lot (which BTW completely screws over any animals that rely on shells, since CaCO3 precipitates in cold temperature, and CaCO3 makes that stuff, mostly in the form of aragonite).

But if the oceans aren't circulating, it messes up the wind patterns over the ocean, and land ocean air mass exchange, and you could actually end up with some very cold continents. But, it's a theory. Climate change is hard to predict, so I don't put a lot of stake in the predictions, and it's also pretty sensationalized IMO.

What Sig said about glaciers is true, I'd heard about the "no arctic ice in summer" but I'm less sure about it, haven't actually seen the studies. I think SOMETHING is happening, it's hard to tell what considering since 1998 (and here, 1995) even the "hockey-stick graph" has shown global temperatures plateauing in the southern hemisphere, which causes a plateau on the graph averaged between northern hemisphere and southern hemisphere, even though the northern hemisphere is still getting hotter.

BTW, I have seen the global warming data, showed it to O2TB last march, I think it was. So it's available on the internet if you dig around and know how to read it. Don't have time to look for it again today.

But something is happening, again not sure what. Whatever it is, it'll probably be another 100 years or so before we see any effect beyond strengthened storms and worsened droughts that we've measured.

Reduce pollution in general is a good idea on it's own merits. Also possibly reducing rate of deforestation, looking into sustainability, biodiversity, waste management, and etc. Definitely I think it would be smart for each individual to take control of their own energy production, relying on the Department of Energy and the government regulated power grid has never made much sense to me. There's just some common sensical things to be doing, whether or not global warming or climate change is happening.

That's my personal approach...Minimal footprint via conservation and other best practices (PLANT MORE BAMBOO) , plus energy self-sufficiency...

My training has led me to believe in a coupling of solar/spaceweather activity with terrestrial weather and oceanic events...

There is a lot of interesting data to support this notion ; here's one example :

It's not an assumption. Higher C02 levels do indeed lead to higher crop productions.

And yes, I know you said higher TEMPERATURES, but CO2 increase has been the boogey man for the Global Warming argument, as the CAUSE of higher temps.

Erm, well, technically, the rate of greenhouse gas being put into the atmosphere is unprecedented, not the actual concentrations. Or at least as far as I know in regards to CO2 and CH4, maybe we have more water vapor than we ever have. But I agree with most everything else, particularly since I think when you're talking about changes in ice age trends, you're talking about the agricultural revolution 10,000 years ago and the ice age that didn't happen.

Nothing was taken out of context, and in fact, the very one who was BEHIND all this pseudo science is now admitting there's nothing to back it up.

It seems as though those on the right are willing to accept one incidence of botched or missing numbers as PROOF of a hoax. In that spirit, I bring you this:

Quote:

Fox News' Fuzzy Math Claims 120% Of Americans Have An Opinion On 'Climategate'

It seems that, according to that alleged "most trusted" news source, 120% of respondents to their recent poll had an opinion on global warming.

Yup, twelve out of every ten of us had an opinion.

Guess that proves that (a) FauxNews is full of shit and just making it up as they go along, and (b) they'll lie and spin any way they can to disprove climate change!

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

No no no, Mike; it means they BELIEVE it, don'tcha get it? "I know it's true 'cuz I heard it on TV". 'Sides, their sycophants can't count any better than they can, so why should they give a damn?

Welcome aboard from me too...much more fun this way, and it doesn't jack threads into fire storms. I thought I heard something too; thought a mosquito had gotten in, but it's the wrong time of year. Hmmm, wonder if there's something wrong with my computer? Naaah, just static, you're right...

FOX isn't lying, they're just sloppy and wrong. But you'll always attribute the worst in those who you disagree with, won't you?

Quote:

"Fox News' graphics department added together the 'very likely' and 'somewhat likely' numbers to reach 59 percent, and called that new group 'somewhat likely.' Then, for some reason, they threw in the 35 percent 'very likely' as their own group, even though they already added that number to the 'somewhat likely' percentage. Then they mashed together the 'not very likely' and 'not likely at all' groups, and threw the 15 percent who were unsure into the waste bin. Voila -- 120 percent."

Not a defense, but just objectively look at what happened here, and don't be afraid to admit the truth.

There are some lazy ass folks in charge of production over at FOX, and it shows.

Can do, Story. Sorry 'bout that.

Oh, by the way, did y'all hear something? Kind of a low whine, it sounded like.

Someday, when you're older, find a clue, and grow a pair, you'll be able to run w/ the big dogs. Until then, stay on the porch, head on your paws, tail tucked 'tween your legs and just stay quiet.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

"the "hockey-stick graph" has shown global temperatures plateauing in the southern hemisphere ... even though the northern hemisphere is still getting hotter."

Heat of fusion ? Maybe it's like the difference between the cold drink that gets warm on a warm day b/c all the ice has melted, and the one that stays cold b/c it still has ice in it.

While most of the Arctic ice is gone by the end of suumer, the Antartic still has most of its ice - though it is melting at a very fast rate.

I know - it's as if a voice were crying out in anger and rage... and then went silent.

I wonder what it could be...
