If Cheney is truly evil (as I suspect), he will be just fine.

If there was even hope of them being held to account for their crimes...

I might agree

As they are above the law, they'll get absolutely no sympathy from me.

A creditable thought, but a wasted one, sociopaths have no ability to appreciate such a thing, never will, all they'll see is a weakness to exploit and to their dying day will never stop trying to.

Neither can we afford it, there's still too many gleeful jackboot licking enablers in our society - although thankfully less and less would-be tyrants as the "old guard" dies off and the would-be successors are woefully and laughably incompetent due to the fact that whether they realize it or not, they're *not* true sociopaths, but emulators*(1), and as such have enough humanity left in them that it keeps tripping up their nefarious plans.

Like I said, a race between sanity and self-destruction.

Of all the "old guard", the only one who I am really concerned about is Rumsfeld, cause unlike the rest of them neo-con squeazels, he actually has a pair, and is competent besides - plus he has a fat chunk of money by way of repeating his 1976 "swine flu" dirty tricks, although I bet less than he expected since he made the mistake of trying to pull that stunt again while folks who remembered it the first time were still alive, and pushing too hard, too fast against folk who were already suspicious as hell of having their buttons pushed that way.

The boiled frog trick doesn't work so well once the frogs know what's going on.

Anyhows, I too would *prefer* your concept, but long experience learned the hard way has taught me that such mercy is a critical mistake which future generations always seem to wind up paying for... dearly.

So I'd say give em to me, and let the sin be mine alone.

Todays and tomorrows children need, and deserve, a future composed of something more than our failures.

The Board of Governors: This seems a steep price for so small a service: to crush a powerless cripple.

Tan'elKoth: Doubly fools. He does have power. One power: the power to devote himself absolutely to a single goal, to be ruthless with himself and all else in its pursuit. It is the only power he needs - because, unlike the great mass of men, he is aware of this power, and he is willing, even happy, to use it.

*(1) Sociopathic behavior as a learned survival/defense mechanism is a very different thing than true sociopathy, since it is a *conditioned* response, as opposed to in-born, and tends to fall apart quickly under pressure in an environment where it's a disadvantage - they may thrive in public schools, but in a sudbury model school's social environment, they'd be bottom rung and it would no longer be a useful survival trait, thus the conditioning will collapse, we've already seen this and proven it out.

BTW: I Liked Mr. Morden.

But then I did side with the Shadows from the very start, as it wasn't THEM that started meddling, and they were extremely restrained in their initial responses to it - they were willing, to a point, to leave the other races the hell *alone* and let them develop as they would, so long as they did not feel threatened.

Not so the Vorlons, no, they HAD to be in charge, they HAD to meddle, even to the point of setting up races for their own destruction instead of development by using them as proxy weapons despite the Shadows having done nothing but, yanno, continue to exist - and *knowing* what provoking them would do, went and manipulated the younger races into doing exactly that, then all but abandoned them as the cannon fodder they were being used as.

Not that I think he was a decent fellow, but yeah, I did like Mr Morden, and when you actually think it through, EVERYONE who asked him for something got *exactly what they wanted*, even Vir, did they not ?

It's always worth a re-watch, Story, kinda like Firefly, it's quality endures such, and there's always so many little things to pick up on in later watchings.

I will say that it changes the whole "tone" of the great war when you KNOW what the Vorlons game was ahead of time, and look beyond them (deliberately) playing on cultural mythos to elevate themselves in the opinion of the younger races...

Tends to leave one pretty pissed at them, not that the Shadows are all so much better, but at least they leave alone till they feel threatened, at which point they tend to lean toward the "Ender Wiggin" defense - scorched earth covered by dust and ashes, and ZERO chance of said opponent ever getting a second bite.

Both races are based on Jungian concepts anyways, and the Trickster (Morden, in this case) is a Shadow concept to begin with - one reason I always found it so interesting, cause they did their homework on the series.

So go on, and look past the physical appearances, at the actions of the parties involved once you know their reasons, and see if you can manage to *not* despise the Vorlons...

Cause I certainly couldn't.

Actually, imma expound on that some more...
(slow night at work, here.)

One of the reasons I like Morden is cause of my assertion that one of the cruelest, meanest things you can do to a person is find out what their hearts desire is, find out what they really WANT, and then...
GIVE IT TO THEM!, give it to em good and hard!

Which is, you think about it, exactly what Morden does.

Key to dealin with that isn't just standing your ground like Vyr did, that only works when you're not important enough to take an interest in, nooo, what you do, is do a couple favors for THEM, unasked, just bein polite, etc etc...

And you never, EVER let them balance the scales - the way their logic works this actively prevents them from cooking up any justification to do unto you, and boy oh boy will they SEETHE, they will hate you for this, while being the very example of politeness and tact, outwardly.

But yeah, they will HATE you, kinda like the cute girl/boy in school whos sexual advances you blew off cause you knew they had nasty ulterior motives, if you had done so after dinner, a movie and a really pleasant evening.

Schemers can't stand having their plans bollixed like that.

======

Also, wanna make it clear what my viewpoint on the other thing was.

I see the Vorlons as downright bad guys, and the Shadows as angry, nasty, seriously provoked neutrals, and here's why.

They were set to watch and protect, not to interfere beyond perhaps subtle and indirect guidance, only if necessary.

The Vorlons *immediately* broke that agreement, before the ink was even dry, kinda like a certain country regarding settlement agreements...

And while playin on cultural and psychological exploitation, they did NOT wish to elevate the other species, but rather to keep them "in their place" as subservient and easy to control - this is made clear beyond doubt when an opportunity that might bring them closer to Vorlons in advancement becomes potentially available and the Vorlons IMMEDIATELY destroy it, with the usual "not ready" line of crap, cause they didn't want the younger races ever being a threat to their dominance.

Now bear in mind, that from the very outset, their fundamental intention was to commit Xenocide against another species simply because their mere existence was a threat to that dominance.

Seriously, pretense of noble intentions be damned, their own behavior condemns them utterly, especially as even *after* the cessation of hostilities, Kosh's pet sleeper agent (Lyta) blows up the Shadow homeworld - something Sheridan calls her on.

I think it's a tremendous credit to the quality of the writing and skill of the writers that they carry it off so perfectly as intended, cause on the first viewing, knowing none of this and limited only to the perspective of the characters within the story, the Vorlons come off as somewhat put-upon good guys trying to "protect us from ourselves"...

It's only on the second or third watching, when you know what their intentions are in advance that they start coming across like the complete bastards they really are.

Conversely, the Shadows - look how much vilification and provocation they put up with for quite some time, and when they did act, their initial response was observation, in order to make sure they were facing a realistic threat, and in keeping with the low profile of the agreement despite the Vorlons having broken it at every turn and corner.

Then they chose the indirect route of espionage, sabotage and manipulation, mostly directed at trying to expose the Vorlons and their chicanery to the younger races without getting their hands dirty or sticking their neck out.

Then when it came clear that wasn't going to work, and they perceived that the younger races, with the possible exception of the Centauri, were corrupted beyond saving, the next order of business was standard operating procedure for the mindset - depriving the Vorlons of their cannon fodder in order to force them to take the field themselves.

Which they did, ripping off the mask and proceding right along with their Xenocidal intentions - so what would you have the Shadows do at that point, up against it and facing down a somewhat fanatical opposition who means to see them utterly annihilated and CAN NOT be trusted whatsoever to hold to any kind of agreement for even five minutes ?

Simple, you do it to them first, and fast.

The only thing that checked their hand was the younger races growing a spine, and check it they did, even despite the Vorlons ONCE AGAIN breaking even that agreement with Kosh's little pet blowing up Z'ha'dum like that - but you can be your sweet bippy that the Shadows left their own observers, and have the biggest, nastiest battlefleet one can possibly imagine set up somewhere in standby mode with scorched earth-final option kind of orders, for the inevitable moment when the Vorlons break even this agreement.

Me, I wouldn't have taken that, the instant Z'ha'dum went boom, I woulda dispatched a pair of planet killers immediately, one for Earth and one for Mimbari, and then plowed my fleet right into the Vorlons in a maximum surprise ambush attack, heavies first, and then when the younger races fleet showed up to assist, had my lighter stuff roll up their unsupported flank and drive them in between us where they and the Vorlons would foul both of em into a total clusterfuck trying not to hit or shoot each other (although the Vorlons would prolly be less picky, still it'd keep em busy) while my forces have themselves a turkey shoot worthy of Marianas.

I guess they had their reasons, not the least of which was respect for the younger races having both the spine and the good sense to tell BOTH sides to go piss up a rope.

If there's one thing I know a lot about, it's Shadow psychology from a Jungian aspect, and the writers really did their homework on Babylon 5.

Hero: Um, no, the basis is that a lot of us feel like he manipulated events proceeding up to the Iraq War, and possibly Afghanistan, in order to give Halliburton some very lush military contracts. At the very least, even if he didn't do this, then he comes off as shamelessly opportunistic and very callous towards the lives of soldiers and civilians.

Among other things, I'm sure. But that's probably the big one for most of us.

Jongstraw: It would only be partisan if Chris was a member of Al Qaeda. Liberals and Al Qaeda really aren't the same thing. Even if it seems to the right-wing like they have similar goals, the ideologies are very different and pretty much incompatible. Imagine, say, Hillary Clinton, trying to convince members of Al Qaeda that they shouldn't make their women wear bhurqas. No, seriously, imagine it, I know you guys don't like Hillary, and all the screaming and blood would probably be cathartic for you.

Chris is expressing the opinion that "Liberator," "Insurgent," "Freedom fighter" and "Terrorist" might all be subjective if any of them happen to cause collateral damage or civilian death.

This coming from the Republicans, the party that handed out Purple Heart Band-Aids at their convention, just to showcase their hatred of John Kerry and their disdain and denigration of his service to his country in a time of war - service that Dick Cheney, to his great and everlasting shame, weaseled out of FIVE TIMES. He's now been paid back in full for the blood on his hands from THAT little escapade. He's now had one heart attack for every person who had to take his place on the field of battle in a war that he outwardly supported while still taking the coward's way out.

Sometimes, there IS justice. Cheney's debt to the Vietnam veterans is now paid in full. We're still waiting for the bill to come due on his other wars. That bill should punch his ticket and stop his ticker for good, and I for one will be glad to see him launched into that great black void.

I know which way my ideology leans, but I take offense at having my feelings about Dumbya, Cheney, Palin, Tea Partiers, etc. called "hate". It doesn’t matter, I know it’ll come and there’s nothing I can do about it, but I’m going to speak up nonetheless. About specifics (it’ll be long):

Regarding Faux News. Bill O’Reilly:
Quote:

If Al Qaeda comes in here [San Francisco] and blows you up, we're not going to do anything about it. ... You want to blow up the Coit Tower? Go ahead. (11/8/05)

I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence. (2/20/08)

(Of Shawn Hornbeck, kidnapped and sodomized by Mike Devlin) The situation here, for this kid, looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his 'old' parents. He didn't have to go to school, he could run around and do whatever he wanted (1/25/07)

Glenn Beck:
Quote:

Obama has "over and over again" exposed himself as "a guy who has a deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.” Beck said. "This guy is, I believe, a racist."

Yesterday, Glenn Beck took a pictorial tour of New York City, pointing out instances of decor that were, in his mind, coded references to crypto-fascist-communism-Obamaism. (9/3/09)

Beck compared getting medical care in India to buying a counterfeit “Gucci” handbag on the street.

Regarding Michael McLendon, who killed 10 people in a shooting spree before committing suicide: “Yada yada yada. And every time they do speak out, they’re shut down by political correctness. How do you not have those people turn into that guy?...But what they really described, when they really got down into it, what they said was: “here’s a guy who felt that he had been wronged. He didn’t feel comfortable talking to anybody. He was disgruntled and everything else.” And then he went out and shot a bunch of people.”

Only a few small samples of a huge volume of insane statements. Those aren’t “slanted opinions", they’re their own words. The people on Faux News condemn themselves quite easily, we don’t have to “slant” anything.

On Sarah Palin: She has provided all her own material, from not knowing the Bush Doctrine to not being able to say what she read to the bridge to nowhere to quitting mid-term to using a palm cheat sheet after dissing teleprompters (which she also uses) to cutting out on the people at book signings to ALL the other things which have clearly shown her to be unsuited for office, ignorant of the facts, and out for her own personal gain. I don’t need to take the time to cite the specifics, we’ve all heard them over and over. Again, we don’t have to slant anything; she provides the material herself. Just recently, condemning Emanuel for the use of “retard” in a private meeting yet defending O’Reilly (or Limbaugh? I get them confused) using it in definitely derogatory ways on TV, and not a word abut equally derogatory use of it by a TV show, if I remember correctly?

As to Republicans, I respect Republicans, those who act and speak intelligently. At this time in history the Republicans in our government are acting like children, flatly refusing to engage in legislating our country, lying over and over about “death panels”, Obama’s birth, and so many other things it takes someone blind or stupid NOT to recognize the lies and falsehoods. I have nothing against reasonable Republicans; those aren’t the ones getting the news, and those don’t seem willing to stand up and decry their Fellow Republicans who are behaving in a shameless manner.

The Tea Partiers deserve all the ridicule they get. Those among them who are angry for legitimate reasons don’t seem to speak up, never condemn the hateful signs their fellow carry, the things they shout out, the way they behave. Any who do, I admire, especially as it seems to take major courage to do so; any “moderate” Republicans are targeted currently.

As to Cheney, anyone who defends him really should look up the facts. The man has condemned himself over and over; when he was in office, he promulgated things which were against the very core of our beliefs, he bent/broke the law—by his own admission, by advocating torture—and took this country in a direction it’s never gone before. He and others used illegal means to circumvent the Constitution and lied to us and Congress to get us into an illegal war. Any decent person has to revile the man for all he’s done and said, if for nothing else than claiming our current President is aiding and abetting the terrorists and other such statements. NO Vice President in history has come out shooting in such a vile manner as he so soon after leaving office, or done so much to undermine the government which has immediately followed his own.

Republicans have every right to diss Clinton, every right to make fun of him for his idiocy and I’ll laugh right along with them. Many of us here have spoken up about the wrongs we see in the Obama administration quite freely; I wasn’t here then, but I’m willing to bet from what I’ve read that the same was not true of Republicans during the Bush Administration. When Dumbya was in office, any dissent was dealt with harshly, called anti-American, media was excluded, protesters were jailed—what is happening now by way of protest would have been permitted.

There is an extreme ugliness on the Right currently; has been since the campaign. When it comes to “hate”, I hate THAT—I hate the unwillingness to even consider compromise, the inability of our government to move forward on over 290 bills because the Republicans in the Senate are abusing the filibuster to forward their own agenda. Those are some of the things I “hate”.

I don’t “hate” Cheney per se. I have a lot of anger about all these people, but they are human beings and something made them the way they are. I hate what they DO. I’ll speak my mind, fantasize and ridicule all I want; I won’t go out and try to do them harm physically, but I’ll express my anger and condescension WHERE IT IS WARRANTED. I’ll debate anyone on any reasonable point, but I won’t respect anyone who can’t make their points in an adult manner and back them up.

I’d like to have a snippet of what went on here while Dumbya was in office. I imagine I could make a lot of points by referencing those things, and in some cases, pertinent points were probably made...and I have no DOUBT anyone anti-Bush was ridiculed and demeaned.

But we all know NOW what happened for eight years, so there should no longer be any question that what went on was WRONG, that the Republicans were in large part responsible for it, Cheney possibly more than any, so they should expect to have it brought up to them. If and when the Republican Party begins to act responsibly, I’ll happily give them all the respect they are due. Until then, what I hear amazes and disgusts me, from Bachman to Coulter to Cheney to Faux News.

That's where I stand. And I guarantee there is FAR, far more hate on the right in today's world than there could conceivably be on the left; it's everywhere.

Well, if you're ever feeling like doing some digging, there's a little link at the bottom of the forum page that says:

Click on that, and it will almost instantly transport you back in time to early 2004 so you can read the ugliness for yourself.

I showed up in late 2005, after I found Firefly by way of Buffy and Angel, and I was in a bit of a minority then. Rue, Signy, Citizen, and DreamTrove were all around back then, as was Frem, but there were a LOT more hard-right hardheads around here then.

Yes, and MAINLY because of YOU, my friend.

but these types of threads every day leave me wonderin' why I come here. I don't see much, if any, common ground any longer. All good things.....

This "Liberally" bent board needs a Conservative balance- sometimes Hero provides that (when he's not playing Authoritarian cheerleader), Finn used to until he left in a huff, and YOU are now the strongest & most respected Conservative voice here. We need you.

I said my piece, FWIW.

Seconded.

We need RIPWash around more, too. And AnthonyT, who tended to lean fairly conservative on many issues, and veered a bit to the left on others, but could almost universally be counted on to have a level-headed dialog, no matter what the issue.

Chris, I appreciate your response and very kind words. But let's face it...I'm not the person to carry the banner of Conservatism here. I just don't have the desire or the stomach to defend many aspects of modern Conservatism. I'm 3/4 traditionalist, and 1/4 progressive. It's not always an easy line to walk.

And Kwicko, when you coming to Fort Lauderdale to have that beer with me?

Who would you recommend as the voice of conservatives? Heck, you not wanting the gig might make you the best choice.

I think part of the problem is shoeboxing someone as " a conservative "

you can be a " they can do no wrong " even if you prove it ass like Rappy...

or you can support some of the ideas conservatives have that do have merit,

fiscal conservatives have a huge place, as they are usually the ones who pose the questions, look at this program, is that pricetag worth the result...

or when questions about individual rights vs group rights come up some very important points are made.

But the entire right side of the political spectrum has been hijacked by people pushing a non progressive... even a non conservative ( in the traditional sense ) position.

I think it is positive some conservatives are stepping away from this, as it probably doesn't represent their views honestly anyway.

After all, with the recent Republican Presidents..

lets say Reagan, Bush, and Bush Redux

has any of the above really been about ( other than in their talking points ) smaller government, or personal freedoms, or responsible representation....

"Cloned"... HOW?

I'm actually with Rappy on this one. Hit "Reply with quote" on that response, and the username comes up AURAPTOR, all caps. Hit "Reply with quote" on Rappy's posts, and it comes up AURaptor.

But as a pre-emptive strike, I tried to register KWICKO (all caps) and kwicko (all lowers), and it tells me those are already taken. For the record, I'm Kwicko - upper AND lower.

But the board only shows usernames in all caps, and the way the user himself (or herself; we don't judge) capitalizes only comes up if you reply with quote, or on the front of the forums page for most recent users.

Weird. And more than a little troubling.

Oh, and the user AURAPTOR only registered today.

I'm not down with this.

Thats why I consider myself to be in the center...

I could go left or right depending on the issue

It is really too bad none of the political partys I know of do that, but stick with a general ideology...

but that is the problem with a two or three party system... from what I have seen of many European governments they have coalition govs of several partys, and need to tone the ideology more to match what the base really wants

makes more sense to me

I mean to say that we must conserve the environment, as in regulate & limit ocean dumping of crap that kills fish, and, in turn, us. Curtail deforestation (particularly the Amazon, which cleans our air, we kinda need it).
Like that.
To be truly Conservative means that you don't advocate pissing away your long term *needed* resources in favour of short term gain.

thats " environmentally Conservative ? "

that is what I thought...

but the last republican president had a rather different view

http://www.historycommons.org/project.jsp?project=bush_enviro_record

it should be the conservatives who lose it on his record, especially on environmental issues

So how Bush and Cheney and their ilk not called to account to their own base ?

CPAC shouldn't be welcoming them to speak, rather calling them to account...

the words Conservative, and Republican shouldn't be used to describe the folk running the right anymore...

But I don't see HOW he would have "cloned himself" - it really IS a different username, it would seem, and an account just created today, while the real Rappy has been here since '04.

And I tried it on my own username, and I couldn't get it to go. I'm concerned - not just for Rappy, but for all of us here. It has the appearance of a breach of security that I don't think any of us would be happy about if it happened to us.

I'll scrap with the guy, I'll get in a knock-down drag-out fight, but crap like this just isn't right. There are RULES to war, you know. :)
