I think Sudan and Sierra Leone have rather low government interference in their "free markets". I don't know if you'd really say they're doing "better", though. I guess it all depends on your view of capitalism!

You say this will be no big deal in your life. I'd wager this "huge intrusive government" will actually be no huge big deal in ANY of our lives.

So what were you babbling about with all your doom & gloom "huge intrusive government" stuff, then, if it's not going to be a big deal?

Bit by bit our liberties have been eroded especially on the local level. More and more laws are past every year gov. gets bigger and bigger....You will miss what we once had. Will it be doom and gloom...no. I never claimed that. I just think there is a better way.

Yep. Fuck Zod and his buddies...

Kaneman's name calling posts deserve no response, so I won't bother. But I guess I WILL miss the freedoms we once had, like slavery, women as possessions with no right to vote, heroin being legal and cocain in Coke, backroom abortions, and oh so many more ways we've degenerated from our initial freedom...Yup, it's a sad day for America all right...

Ahh... clearly you'd rather live in a world where insurance companies take your payments, then refuse to treat you when you are injured or sick. And you'd prefer Wall Street banks who raise your interest rates without warning or control. And hey! Let's have car companies sell us cars that break down within months after purchase, or randomly accelerate or what the hell - explode. And you'd just love it if the local gang of thugs came into your home or business (armed with machine guns that outdo your .57 or whatever it is you guard yourself with) and took your stuff, and you had no recourse to the law.

Go on and live in that world. Enjoy. I'll be here in civilization, dealing with reality.

What? You haven't packed your bags and started building that shack in Bumfuck Austrailia yet? Go on! Git boy, git! Prove to us how much you love your independence!

Spare me the "talking point" snark. I actually heard the Brer Rabbit bit from Bill Moyers, you know, that right wing nut job on PBS. (though the comparison had already crossed my mind)

I don't suppose you noticed the upswing in insurance company stock? Seriously, they got their mandate and no price controls. How can they NOT come out ahead??

Ultimately, I don't care what they wanted. What they got was highway robbery and my "job" is to do anything and everything I can think of to throw a monkeywrench in their scam.

"... however they are easier to control. you know that."

Actually ... ... ... no. What happens in real life is that international corporations lean on people at both the state and local levels. For example, think of any major refinery in, oh, Louisianna. They get lax pollution control regs, tax breaks and even tax money in the form of supporting infrastructure. States and localities are that much easier to pit against each other and control.

Not at all. The gun issue and personal liberties(abortion etc...) were already dealt with, with a bill of rights and constitution( when interpreted my way). This goes against that whole idea that give us those rights. The reason the gov. should never be able to tell a woman she can't have an abortion is the same reason not to tell me I have to buy insurance.
Same Argument.....just be consistant

Then regulate companies all you want. I don't have near a problem with that. companies don't, nor should have OUR rights. My, you ARE stupid, aren't you?

You're arguing for states' rights by claiming that the federal government is taking control and THEN arguing that "Bit by bit our liberties have been eroded especially on the local level."

You don't see the knot you've just argued yourself into? You want MORE states' rights, because in your view, our liberties have been eroded, especially on the local level. So your smaller government, easier to control, closer to home, is the one you claim has eroded our liberties. In the words of the great Socrates, "Double You Tee Eff?"

Here's the link: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/03052010/watch.html

Quote:

BILL MOYERS: Excuse my growing cynicism at this age and stage, but could this be the briar patch strategy? In other words, they want to get people angry enough to-- for Congress to pass that health care reform with the mandate that delivers millions of new customers to them under penalty of law.

WENDELL POTTER: Well, the way the legislation is structured, this will give them a lot of new business. And millions and millions, billions of dollars in new revenue, and much of it coming from taxpayers in the form of subsidies over ten years-- about half a trillion dollars will come from the US government to help cover the premiums, for people who otherwise couldn't afford to pay those premiums. So yeah, they will win. There's no doubt. They don't like a lot of this legislation. There's much they're trying to kill. And they could live without this bill being passed.

BILL MOYERS: Well, they're doing pretty well as it is.

WENDELL POTTER: Oh, absolutely.

BILL MOYERS: Personally and individually.

WENDELL POTTER: And yeah, exactly, and this system can be sustained quite a long time. And they can get richer and richer as we get more and more underinsured and uninsured.

By the way, Rappy the Amazing Disappearing Waffle finally got back to me on that answer I was looking for.

According to him, I'm not worthy of an answer.

Which means he's got nothin'.

But you all already knew that, didn't you?

Shame we'll never get to find out what parts of the healthcare bill specifically outline how it's going to destroy the country. If only we'd been let in on the secret, we might have been able to head off the disaster.

Think we can waterboard it out of him? Or does he honestly just not know what he's talking about, because he's never read one word of the bill?

Really? Argueing for states rights is a knot? I don't know were you live , but here in the northeast we have health insurance for the poor. SAGA in Ct and Mass...we don't need a fed program that does'nt give insurance to the poor just makes myself and other mid class folks BUY it....get a clue

What are you twelve? I said nothing like that. Seeing the constitutional arguement is lost on you, lets try this one... If you can make an arguement that women have the right to thier bodies in the case of abortion explain to me why I don't have a right to mine on wether or not I BUY insurance.....Try this time. Really.

Oh, and dip shit, I have not said our liberties have eroded because of local government. I said it's because the Federal powers are over-ruling anything that should be done at the local level, thus making local correction impossible. The only knot here is the one in your head.

As for the abortion argument, I don't have to make that argument at all. You might have missed it, but the entire torture debate undertaken by the last administration - and a debate that was gleefully cheer-led by Cheney and other "conservatives" - was about making the point that non-citizens HAVE NO RIGHTS, constitutionally or otherwise. Now, the constitution is pretty clear about who is a United States citizen, and one big part of being a citizen is BEING BORN HERE. Right up until delivery (i.e., BIRTH), that fetus is no citizen, and due no rights at all.

Hey, it's not MY argument; it's the CONSERVATIVE argument. Sorry if it pisses in your punchbowl.

PEACEKEEPER

Keeping order in every verse

All I know is this. The US, up until now is the ONLY developed economy not to offer centralised non profit health care to it's populus. It is the ONLY capitalist economy to accrue profit from the debt management of non payment of medical bills.62% of US personal debt is from borrowing money to pay for medical treatment.
So I welcome you finally to the modern age, where National Medical Care is a God given right and not a luxury for the opulent few. I think this is one occasion where you are finally catching up with your peers and not the other way around for a change.
I honestly feel that you are making too big a deal over this.If it works for the rest of the world, why won't it work there?

Where have the Ideas on this board gone? What does a torture debate and Dick Cheney have to do with my thought... that the Federal Gov. should not stomp on my right not to BUY health insurance or a woman's right to choose? Tell me why they should stomp on either right. Then ask yourself who sounds like a Cheney-conservative?

But you can't/won't. You have been too conditioned to think this issue of liberty is about being a Dem. or Rep .....that is why you bring up Cheney...When its actually about being controlled by the STATE or NOT!!! Foriegn policy SHOULD be debated, Global warming SHOULD be debated...Whether or not a CENTRALIZED GOVERNMENT (ANY CENTRALIZED GOVERNMENT) has the right to tell a freeman he has to get/or not get FUCKING INSURANCE....This is not debatable. Unless you are an idiot.

My arguement is that it was not what the founders of this country wanted. That we have given the Centralized Government too much power. That they will abuse this power(which the founders warned us about) if allowed to have. This time it is about BUYING..YES, BUYING health insurance...What next? Abortion? Guns? Climate? Where does it end? It will only matter who is in power at the time of debate? Well, not if the states had thier intended power....remember checks and balances?

Trust me..in a world where I am forced to BUY insurance. someday something YOU want, or don't want, is going to be decided by the Gov.

Talk about missing the point entirely...

The snark "not so much" was referring to Chris's saying that "you win". Seriously, if I were going to go after you for your astonishing inability to communicate effectively, I'd have done it much sooner.

You jump down my throat for not grasping your point, a point that you couldn't articulate in anything close to an effective way, even given a dozen or more posts to clarify your own thoughts and positions!

Hear, hear!

That's laughable in its sheer stupidity. EVERYTHING you want, or don't want, is decided by the government already.

Want cigarettes or tobacco? You can have that, but there's going to be a large tax attached. Want to buy a house? You can, but there are going to be fees and taxes that go with it. Don't have children? Too bad - you're going to pay for the school system anyway. Don't believe in invading sovereign nations who haven't attacked us? Tough - that military adventure is being done on your dime!

Hell, you want heroin, cocaine, or even pot? Government says you can't have those, no sir. Need an abortion, a perfectly legal medical procedure, according to the federal government? Sorry - in 87% of counties in this country, because of "states' rights" and control at the local level, you are not allowed to have one unless you have the money to travel somewhere else. Abortions are only for those rich enough to treat them as vacation weekends, apparently.
