What’s with these guys/this guy? It never seems to stop lately...but is Steele out?

Two top GOP congressional leaders sidestepped questions about their confidence in Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele on Sunday, adding to a number of Republicans who have expressed concerns about Steele's leadership since news emerged last week that an RNC aide authorized spending almost $2,000 at a bondage-themed club in West Hollywood as part of an effort to woo young donors.

Asked on "Fox News Sunday" if Steele should step down, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz), the No. 2 Republican in the party's leadership in the Senate, said "well, I'm not in the position of the people who elect Michael Steele to either say he should step down or not."
But he added, "this kind of thing has got to stop or they won't get any contributions. The people that contribute to the committees, both Democrat and Republican, want to know that their money is well spent for the cause, and it needs to be that way."

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), a top Republican leader in the House who is helping craft the party's platform for the fall's elections, said "you've got to bring the trust back, and that may mean shaking some other roles inside the RNC as well."
Asked if he had "full confidence" in Steele, McCarthy refused to say so, instead noting "the RNC does have some challenges that they need to correct."
"The victories we've had from New Jersey to Virginia, they've been engaged in," he said on "Fox News Sunday." "They've outraised the Democrats seven of the last 12 months. But if we are going to show that -- the American public that we believe in accountability and bringing it back to Washington, we have to make sure that the RNC has the accountability just the same."

Neither man called for Steele to resign, and no prominent party leader has yet done so. Republican strategists privately say the GOP would like to avoid a divisive internal battle over the chairmanship at a time when the party hopes to make major gains in this fall's elections by keeping the focus on President Obama and congressional Democrats.

But Kyl and McCarthy joined a number of Republicans, including former White House adviser Karl Rove and ex-Senator Rick Santorum (R-Penn.), who have criticized the RNC over the last several days. Steele aides have said the chairman did not know of the expenses at Voyeur, and the aide who approved the expense was fired last week.

Michael Steele seems like a super nice, intelligent guy, but he can’t seem to articulate a good plan for the RNC. I hope he gets his stuff together fast because I’d really hate to see him go.

I really do think it would be a monumental mistake for the RNC to give Steele the boot before the mid-terms. Of course, they might not be able to do it AFTER the mid-terms, especially if the Republicans pick up seats. Hard to shit-can the guy who handed you victory, right?

Well, unless you've already laid out the expectations of having a MONUMENTAL victory, that is... There are still Republican lawmakers running around chanting "Repeal and Replace! Repeal and Replace!" as if they're actually expecting to not only win both houses of Congress, but to win veto-proof majorities to boot. In which case, it's going to be very easy to walk Steele off the plank at that point, because that just simply is not going to happen.

Niki, I know you think Steele is a laughing stock and that he's a boon to the Democrats, but he's the guy who was sitting at the helm when fewer than one in five Americans self-identified as Republican, and the same guy who helmed THREE big Republican wins against all odds (Virginia governor, New Jersey governor, Massachusetts senator).

Have there been gaffes? You betcha. Are they STEELE'S gaffes? Well, to somewhat less of a degree than John Edwards's affair was Obama's problem, I s'pose, but not that terribly different. Maybe it's more akin to Biden's gaffes being a reflection on Obama.

I'm a lefty, about as partisan about that as anyone here - but I'm not about to lead a lynch mob against Michael Steele, because in all honesty, as much as I disagree with the guy, I think he's done a fairly amazing job with a fairly appalling set of circumstances to overcome in the process. Sorry if I can't join you in slagging him.

OOops, Mike, you misunderstood. I'm enjoying the idiocy the RNC has suffered lately, because it's of their own making, but I DEFINITELY don't blame Steele for most of it. I kinda think he's a kick in the head; they wanted a "token black" and got a guy who shoots his mouth off and "talks ghetto"--it's gotta drive some of them nuts, which makes me giggle.

I titled it "RNC and Steele" because the RNC is mostly at fault, but Steele is having it all laid at his feet even tho' he's only responsible for part of it, which is unfair. Dunno if they'll knock him off or not, kinda suspect they will 'cuz he hasn't turned out to be what they expected and 'cuz he's caused enough gaffs with his own mouth to be uncomfortable as hell. I don't think he'd necessarily deserve it, tho' I don't think he's had his eye on the fact that as RNC Chairman, it's exclusively his job to raise money for the party--at that he's been singularly ineffective.
