A truly extraordinary thing happened on CNN Sunday: a mainstream media representative actually took Rush Limbaugh's side in a dispute with Bill Clinton.

As readers are likely aware, the conservative talk radio host and the former President exchanged words last week over who was to blame for the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995.

"Reliable Sources" host Howard Kurtz broached this subject in Sunday's second segment eliciting a rather surprising response from Reuters' global editor-at-large Chrystia Freeland:

I have to say, on this one I'm on Rush Limbaugh's side...I'm not accusing Rush Limbaugh of being guilty of too much balance, but I do think blaming the media is a very weak thing for politicians and businesspeople to do. And I think we in the media should really be pretty, pretty careful before we agree with the criticism.

Not surprisingly, Salon's Joan Walsh didn't agree, and once again found herself alone in her perilously liberal views as the cameras were rolling (video follows with transcript and commentary):

assuming, for the sake of argument, that rush is right and clinton is wrong, this really does no more than provide support for the unremarkable observation that a broken clock is right twice a day. really, rush specializes in mass bloviation, and sooner of later he is bound to get something right. to use a sports analogy (note that i hate sports), if you take enough swings, you are bound to hit something sooner or later. actually, thats a pinata analogy.

Home run leaders often have the highest number of strike outs as well.

But as you casually dismiss the fact that Rush was "correct" on this matter, you failed to notice some of the more interesting aspects of this issue.

An editor from Reuters agreed w/ Rush, as did the vast majority of those on the CNN show, ( save for one ) and DISagreed with President Clinton. CNN, which was often referred to as " Clinton News Network " , didn't lay down and blindly agree w/ Bill, but actually took the side of the big time Right wing radio host.

Go figure.

wtf is a homerun? i offer, in reply, that the sun shines on a dog's ass sometimes.

i did not casually dismiss that Rush was "correct", but rather just assumed he was right...for the sake of argument. i thought that you would appreciate that--i did it for you, you ungrateful bastard.

no, actually, i did it because i fail to see how the fact that a dying media channel disagreed with a politician's statement is interesting. for the...sake of argument...i could assume that CNN is one of Clinton's organs. obviously, they're one of rush's now! or obamas.

You used a sports analogy, then clarified it w/ the sport of piñata smacking?

Swings, hits and misses, also tend to bring up other sports analogies here the U.S. , that of baseball.

A swing and a miss at a ball, is a strike.

Those who hit the most home runs ( usually to mean a big hit, where the ball leaves the park ) quite often also have the most strike outs. Meaning, they miss the ball the most as well....seemed to apply more accurately than piñatas.

i don't know anything about sports, but i do know that hitting pinatas is sporting. this baseball stuff sounds really weird, and suspicious. does it have any relation to fascism, apple pie, or mothers? if so, i do not approve.

a better analogy, because it is much more fitting to picture rush as a fat kid swinging blindly, than a competent, trained athlete.

Only been to a few baseball games in my life, and not many as of recent, but I don't recall any apple pies being sold in the stands.

Hot dogs? Yes. But that's got little to do w/ the actual game itself. ( yeah, some might disagree )

Regardless, Rush has lost 90 lbs and appears to be in pretty fair shape these days.

Of course, Babe Ruth was anything but fit in appearance, and still held on to the home run crown for several decades. Until some steroid induced " athletes " finally rewrote the record books.... but I digress.

Do you have any evidence that Hank Aaron was on steroids, or are you just dismissing him because he's black?

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I don't necessarily agree with Rush completely in what he said, but when it comes to this particular issue, I think he has a point.

I blame POLITICIANS, the McCain campaign and those with the microphone mostly for the calls for violence, not the media. Those people should be held accountable as authority figures for what they say, and they are the ones purveying that violence would be justified. Clinton is wrong in saying the views of commentators has that much influence, and I have no doubt there have been statements of questionable responsibility by those on TV and radio.

But no, I don't blame them for the creation of the atmosphere, then or now. There are those on any side who can be incited to violence; there are also those on NO side, it's a fact of human nature that some will go beyond the bounds of rationality, for whatever "reason" THEY feel is valid.

I don't believe Clinton's or anyone else's warnings about potential violence caused by the words of TV commentators or the fringe elements; but I do hold those in public office responsible, and those whose job it is to wind people up at rallies and events where mob mentality easily takes hold.

By the way, while we're pointing fingers, what is the response to the fact that people supposedly on the left disagreeing with Clinton and agreeing with Rush? If someone can point out instance(s) where anyone on FauxNews has done the equivalent, I would like to see it. "Fair and Balanced" would require that now and again validity would be recognized on either side, yet I've never seen that kind of willingness to speak up and chastize anyone on their "side".

The material proferred in this thread speaks as much to the decency of the supposedly-left-leaning media and their ability to chastize those on the left as the lack of the same happening at FoxNoise does.

The good part of the analogy isn't rush's weight (he is less chubby, but if you can lose 90 lbs and still be fat, you have merely gone from fat to fat), but rather his blindness.

In what universe does one person agreeing with another person's opinion make it "fact"?

Oh, right.... Rappyland. And only if it's a Republican being agreed with. Otherwise the rule does not apply.

Kwicko wasn't making a funny, but rather factual assertion, and also a rather modest estimation of rush's heft.

This is the opposite of your usual problem of mistaking rush's jokes for factual assertions. For the record, I have listened to limbaugh, off and on, since I was a mincingcub, and I learned a lot about being a butthole from him. This makes me fair as a maiden, and balanced as lance armstrong's ballsack.
