This is piratecat have been away awhile. Have been on Utube listening to his book Mere Christianity. WOW I was blown away. Good stuff. Makes alot of sense. Pride is our downfall. Not to mention the world we are in. He also wrote Narnia now I got to see this movie. I guess he was a reader of George MacDonald of the 19th century. Man I am just blown away with men of thought like this. Gives me hope when I get down about things.

Interesting, will try to digest it. Christian apologetics are like pearls; watching a great thinker struggle with the irritating flaws of theism can be pretty.

If pride is our downfall, is shame a grace?

I now understand when John the Baptist says repent. I know what that really means. To feel shame and it is a weight to bare. A complete change in how you see yourself and others. It is good stuff. I liked when Lewis says if you look down on others how can you look above to the lord. That was heavy. I am so guilty of this. I don't show compassion alot of times. I need to be more humble to others. I am guilty of that so much. I am working on it.

America loves a winner!

On Narnia, I find it interesting that both he and Tolkien were friends and contemporaries, and both wrote such extensive, epic fantasies. There's a wealth of information and discussion material there.

I'm so enamored over Tolkien's works, an know so little about Lewis, it seems a bit of a discrepancy. Seems I should work on that a bit.

It's fascinating stuff, Rap.

Treebeard was initially in part, a goof on Lewis by Tolkien, making fun of Lewis's habit of extended throat clearing and (alledgedly) boring delivery, all in good fun, of course.

Here's a tidbit you might find interesting.

The name itself is evocative of the image of ink stained geeks with typewriter callouses and correction pencils tucked behind their ears, a golden age of literature we've yet to ever recapture.

Ok, yeah, I have a soft spot for folks who can bring dreams to celluloid or paper, and a fondness for the written word and physical books even in the age of modern media - but too few are daring enough to go there, and instead we get drek like Twilight, stuff cadged out of the buttkissing circles of "writers workshops" which amount to naught more than mutual ego stroking cause no one dares give, or take, criticism, bleh.

Give me the dreamers, the visionaries, no matter their skill - that fondness is one reason I am so supportive of Peter Beagle (The Last Unicorn) and Conlan press, few publishers these days are willing to take a risk on anything but pre-packaged pop culture drek, and that's a shame...

Big one, too - old friend of mine with real talent finally got a short story based on a larger work published in an anthology, but my joy for him was tempered by the awfulness of the rest of the contributors - it was fun to watch his eyes light up as he read my review, since I am notoriously merciless about such things.

If you're curious though, the story in question is Hammer Song - and he takes the wiser course of writing what one knows, since he actually makes armor himself.

Yeah... That's why I tried to avoid getting into writing fanfiction for so long. Plus it's not like writing an original story, really. It is good practice, though.

It's when fanfiction and badly written original work are published as PROFESSIONAL stuff that we have trouble. There's certain authors that after they start making a certain amount of money, it's less about the MERIT and quality of what they're writing, and more about the franchise...
