Well, DT, since I've been here (which isn't that long admittedly), I've seen no degeneration. What you describes is what I see...and I hear references to it being that bad (or worse?) during the Dumbya administration. So the degeneration you speak of must have happened a long, long time ago--given Dumbya was Prez in 2002 when Firefly came out, are you sure it's degenerated?

Funny, I was never called a sockpuppet when I arrived. Maybe because my arrival brought along a few from the other site I was on to attack me, I dunno. NOW, I'm kinda surprised nobody's accused me of being Mike's sockpuppet, since our views are often similar and we are the only two (that I've seen) who use coding in our posts.

Hello,

When I first joined, there was no thread-title changing. I don't know if it's because people were more polite, or whether no one had figured it out yet.

If I had my druthers, there would be a 'switch' I could set on my profile to disable pictures and imbedded media. (Maybe there is? If there is, someone tell me!)

Many times, I have to abandon a thread because PirateNews has posted a visual that is too offensive for my environment. I really don't like what he says, though I wouldn't silence him. But sometimes those pictures mean I avoid a thread so that I don't offend passers-by who might see the image.

I don't want his picture-posting to be disabled. I just want an option to shut it off myself. In fact, I might like the option to cause all of Pirate's posts to be 'ignored.' Then he can rant madly to an audience of None as I tune in to the things that interest me.

I don't really have a problem with sock puppets. I favor the anonymity of the web. If you want to win any respect you have to earn respect from the other members, something which a sock puppet cannot do, but it potentially gives a user a chance to reset. I think the way sock puppets are used is sometimes disingenuous.

I am sorry but I appear to be responsible for thread title changing, I do it often, but not as often as mike. It started with someone else figuring it out, I don't remember whom. Afterwards, they put a lid it, and then I figured it our and told everyone.

I also think i made you blue, which makes you look different, and I really did make everyone change their avatars.

The specific change of ambiguous multiple threads has been quite recent, and it makes it difficult of me to follow. The ipad can't handle very long threads, so I give up on them. The shorter redundant thread are useful to me there.

Anthony makes a good point about pirate news, it's not safe for work.

Anthony, I just noticed was in your signature, I thought it was you can't lose a quark you don't girth, but you could very well be right, I have no idea what I was trying to say, do you remember which thread it was?

I've been accused of being Signy's sockpuppet, and Rue's as well, and they've been accused of being each other's (but never mine, which strikes me as odd, if I were accused of being theirs... but they were both here before me, so I guess they couldn't be my sockpuppets, unless I were them, and they were me, and I created me long after I created them...).

Speaking of, china seems to be funding terrorists in India, and also NK attacked SK in a way that would have started a war in the past, I think people should admit the restraint, however temporary.

I use a variant open source on my heavy PC, but on the lighter jobbie, Mozilla Firefox with Ad Block Plus and Flashblock works wonders, guy.

The scripts/movies, blocked unless YOU wanna load em, which you can do by clickin the replacement icon - and any offensive image, just right click, and block, and you can block that specific image, whole domain, etc.

Works wonders for your speed to, when the sixteen freaking scripts from doubleclick and all the other information vaccums and trackers get blocked out and don't soak up your bandwidth needlessly - it's MY bandwidth, *I* choose what loads.

Use Firefox with the ad-blocker plugin. You can right click on any picture or video to block it, as widely or as specifically as you want. And of course, the obvious one of BLOCKING THOSE HELL SPAWNED FLASH ADS, the "overlay" ones that jump out and THROW themselves over the content, the ones that take over your speakers and SCREAM at you, *all* of em.

Takes a little more work and configuration than ABP, since you have to figure out which script is doing what, but eventually you'll have a list of "usual suspects" you can block wholesale.
(And provoke a life-long hatred of the corporations in question, and any site or product ever affiliated with them in any way.)

I am having a little trouble figuring out how to kill off those spam-my-site-to-raise-hit-count-and-make-me-money sidebars, but I'll find a way.

The site operators can whine and whinge, but they know *damned* well the slime they're gettin in bed with and the cozy relationship between "advertisers" and malware - and despite flinging the ads at you, which I picture smacking into your screen like a gooey glob of something between an insect and a virus, desperately clawing at your machine, trying to devote *your* resources, *your* hardware and bandwidth, to THEIR purposes without your permission, for the express desire to ram advertising (and most of it for fucking scams) down your throat on a pike...

But no, the site operator, despite holding the door open for such sleazy, slimy "guests", then refuses to take any friggin responsibility for their conduct ?

Oh hell no - they can whine and whinge about the blocking all they like, crying poverty and howling like a little baby cause they didn't get *paid* for their (damn near exclusively plagarized/copied) so-called "content", but in all honesty their greed, their lack of any moral standard whatsoever, and the same lack amongst the "advertisers" being the prevailent attitude of the day...

THEY BROUGHT IT ON THEMSELVES.

Technology's Sword has TWO edges, and for every attempt to pry into your personal hardware and bandwith that YOU paid for, and use it for free for their OWN purposes (and think about THAT when these thieving scum scream about copyright and their intellectual property "rights" while they try to carjack your hardware) there WILL be a counter, because people find a way.

That said, three cheers for Haken, who's an exemplar of everything a site operator *should* be, and should I ever find myself within reach of him, for that alone he'd be gettin a rather nice bottle of single-malt, cause he friggin earned it, you ask me.

But anyhow, yes, I adore my ad-block/script-block, rather passionately so because it gives me the ability to fight back against criminals who try to carjack MY hardware and bandwidth, and I countenence their pathetic cries with the exact amount of patience I would for a would-be burglar complaining that my locks and alarms deprive him of his means to make a living...

I probably DO lean towards libertarianism, but if so, I lean that way from the left. Problem is, I in no way want to be associated with the horrorshow that has become the modern movement, absconded with by the likes of antimason and Wulfie here. They are to libertarians what folks like Rappy and Bush were to conservatism a couple years ago; their beliefs and utterances are so abysmally absurd that they become their movements' own worst enemies, and send people running, in droves, to get far, FAR away from them in an effort to be disassociated from such positions.

If the problem is a work computer, I suggest you just download it anyway, and tell your boss you are trying to protect the place from viral attacks.

NoScript, though, I found myself having to turn off a lot when I took my machine to school and tried to log on to their wireless. It wouldn't let the page load, ever, since it was a redirect when I opened my browser. I finally just left it off, might try enabling it again now that I'm out of school. But if you have any tips on getting the most out of it without half my favorite sites getting blocked off, I'd be happy to hear.

Well noscript is mostly for us paranoids who dig into places that might be unsafe - you can get by on ABP and Flashblock just fine doll, NoScript is a bit more technical and a pain in the ass to configure, best reserved when you might be suspicious of a site to begin with.

I would be forced to mention agreeing with Hero, only it would probably end up in his signature, and his quote from me as it is, is totally misspoken. I said I found your remarks "amazing" because they so disgusted me and were so unconscionable; that you'd put them up as if they were a compliment is both sickening and typical. It speaks volumes about his poor self-image, if nothing else!

As to PN, however, everyone know how I feel, and it's pretty much the same. I find him nothing but irritating; I know some say he contributes, but for me, how can he contribute if I'm so turned off by how he words things that I no longer even read his posts?

Thanx for clearing that up, guys, that makes all the sense in the world. I virtually never "reply with quotes", I usually pick out the relevant passages to reply to, so I've never noticed that my emoticons show the photobucket code. I HAVE hit "reply" at times to see who changed a title, but beyond that, I cut and paste. Thanx for answering my curiosity; now I can stop even occasionally wondering!

The name "Nikovich" was taken from Illya Nikovich Kuryakin, the "second banana" on the old "Man from U.N.C.L.E." series--as a teenager, I had a huge crush. Seeing him as someone as old as I am on NCIS was a shock, but I'm glad he's making steady paychecks. When I took it, I didn't know it meant "son of Nick", hee, hee, hee!

With regards to this thread, I think we would all be better off if PN was either banned or eliminated by his police state death squad.

I've had good fights with just about everyone, lots of liberal/conservative/crazytalker back and forth on every side all for fun and sometimes we learn something.

PN is the only person here who contributes nothing to the discussion and who hurts everyone with his paranoid rambling and incoherant anti-Jew and racist postings.

But doesn't garbage have the right to be garbage?

PN has his followers here, some of whom share many of his core beliefs. Wulfie is one; Kaneman another. They love his stuff.

Nope, no bans, no censorship. If PN's stuff bugs me, I can either skip right past it, or mock him incessantly about it. The one thing guaranteed to send him off the deep end is to turn his paranoia back on him, and suggest that he's a Jew or a homosexual (both of which are, of course, true of him; he IS a Jewish homosexual, as well as a paid government operative - witness his self-admitted military record!).
