Fact: Young people of binge-drinking college age are completely self-centered, insufferable dorkmonkeys with the souls of immature doorknobs, and they have entirely vacuous Facebook pages to match. There, I said it.

No wait: Actually, science said it, more or less, via a strange and rather impossible new study, informing anyone who might care to listen that young people, well, they just don't really give a damn about you, the world or its pathetic little problems -- at least, not as much as they used to. Hey, it's a study. So you know it must be true.

Behold, one my favorite cultural gyrations. I simply love it when staid science furrows its brow, digs deep into the shallow gene pool that is the young, massively entitled, hormonally engorged, eternally baffled college-aged American animal, and attempts to examine his meager brain, draw out something resembling actual substance, evaluate it, quantify it, and then claim it as some sort of valuable truism.

(Mark Morford...he has such a way with words!)

The study:
Quote:

Are college students as nice as they used to be? Apparently not, and modern technology may be partly to blame.

A new University of Michigan study has found that since 2000, college students have become less empathetic.

Compared with college kids of the late 1970s, the study says, today's are less likely to agree with statements including "I sometimes try to understand my friends better by imagining how things look from their perspective" and "I often have tender, concerned feelings for people less fortunate than me."

The meta-analysis was led by Sara Konrath, a researcher at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research, and was presented in Boston at the annual meeting of the Association for Psychological Science. She analyzed data on empathy among almost 14,000 college students over the past 30 years.

"We found the biggest drop in empathy after the year 2000," said Konrath, who is also affiliated with the University of Rochester's Department of Psychiatry. "College kids today are about 40 percent lower in empathy than their counterparts of 20 or 30 years ago, as measured by standard tests of this personality trait."

2000, did you notice?

I blame Bush.

Hello,

There was an old study, where some psychologists encouraged people to zap subjects to death.

When was that done? Before I was born, probably.

Anyhow, I've been worried about empathy since then. Nothing to do with Bush. People are scary sometimes.

That study was about the negative effects of authority and how far people will go when such authority encourages them. The above study is about default behaviour. So, comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges.

Hello,

Do you not see a lack of Empathy in both cases?

Anthony

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

I actually know the grad student who designed the experiment, and there was a thread about it here.

Heres what he said

1. Young people can be driven to the most absurd action if they believe that the end goal of what they're doing is right. Studednts were selected at random, not told what they were getting into initially, and later told that they were trying to understand the Nazi mindset to insure something like this from ever happening again.

2. During the study, he planted ringers who were told to give up on the experiment on cue and declare their outrage at it's immorality and storm out of the group. As the number of ringers increased, it showed no affect on the non-ringer volunteers. Even when there was one actual volunteer and nine ringers deserting, the remaining volunteer would refuse to leave the experiment.

3. Only preprogramming against the experiment would work, and then only if people were conditioned towards highly random thought patterns

4. Milgram, he said, was uninterested in preventative programming, deprogramming or resistance strategies to the point where he became suspicious of Milgrams goals. They had created a monster, he said, and there was little concern or desire on the part of milgram, the university or the backers of tent study in uncreating the monster, and when he tried, they shut it down, he later went on to discover the above treatments in sweden and France.

5. The study was created when milgram asked his students to design a study that they thought, iin theory, would recreate the Nazi mindset. When Milgram wanted to do the study he was reluctant, but then Milgram set it up, and was unwilling to quit. When Milgram tried to claim all the credit for it, the student did not stop him,

Anthony, you'd be interested in getting your hands on this book, if you can, then.

678X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1275836778&sr=8-2

It's a book on how crushing empathy out of our kids is the path the doom, but the importance of it is in who the authors are.

Bruce Perry, of CITIVAS/Childtrauma Academy.
Maia Szalavitz, the lady who did the most to bring the hellcamps into the public eye.

I already know mosta what's in it, having learned much of it the hard way, but having that information in a collected and concise form by the folks who's initial research determined it can be useful.

DT: Did that happen here at Stanford? Somewhere I seem to have picked that up.

I know they had to call a halt to the experiment because of how vicious it was getting.

I've never forgotten that thing; it always reminds me how strong peer pressure can be, on anyone.

Frem, ever considered that doom was the goal?

I suspect this of Milgram. "Oh, lets figure out how the Nazis did this so it can never ever happen again. Then let's make sure that our military never gets a hold of it, so they never use the same techniques to create an army of zombies..."
