Windows Vista7 can't read 16-bit install programs, NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO.

So how old is that version of PhotoShop you're trying to install? And why'd you buy a Windoze™ machine in the first place?

Actually, I liked Vista and I like Windows 7 even better!

You can't stick real old software on a new OS, PC or Mac.

That's what I was getting at, Penguin. Hell, I'd love to be able to load up Adobe Illustrator 88™ on my MacBook, but it doesn't have anywhere to insert a 700kb floppy disk!

PN sounds like he's complaining because his brand new car won't run on steam power. PS 5.0 came out over a dozen years ago. Were they supposed to stop improving software and processors then, so you could remain current?

And why won't my PSOne games play on my PS3?!

It doesn't really matter if it's on a Floppy disk(Do computers post 2003 even come with floppy drives anymore?) or CD, it's all in the coding of the files, so, whoever wrote the code for the version of Photoshop you're using, probably wasn't thinking, 'Hey, I'd better make sure this version can run on a Next Gen computer.'

You know, that *WAS* the primary selling point of the PS2, Mikey - and WHY it grabbed the market share it did, folks were sick and tired of buying the same library of games over and over for new platforms, especially when the new platform originally offered much of nothin for the buck.

Hell, Need for Speed: Carbon - on Xbox is pretty enough, but I got the Xbox360 version cheap, and you know what?
Sucks ass, what's the damn difference in upgrading the resolution to show scenery that amounts to naught more than a blank wall, who's bright idea was that - and the game library sucks even worse, not to mention the hardware problems like red ring of death, overheatin, and intermittent mid-game shutdowns, leaving you throwing controllers in frustration when that last save was two hours ago.

PS3 has it's own list of problems, and one reason the Wii has market share at all in spite of it's terrible controller is the backwards compatibility cause folks can play their gamecube stuff on it.

As for PCs, I paid almost five hundred bucks for a laptop which sits at the bottom of a closet cause of that damn Vista shit, don't *even* get me started, I have a lot of legacy software that's actually secure instead of being loopholed and backdoored all to hell, and Vista/Win7 are insecure by design thanks to the fucking DMCA, not to mention most american "security" software has big gaping holes in it for the convienience of the jackboots, and every bloody hacker knows right where they are - and let's not pretend you can actually get the OS you want, the day I bought that piece of shit laptop, I was begging, PLEADING for them to sell me one of the XP machines they were *PUTTING IN THE CRUSHER TO APPEASE MICROSOFT* even at triple the price, and they wouldn't friggin do it, so much for what the customer wants, neh ?

Fuck it, fuck them, Win XP/SP2 or Linux, and if you wanna sell me a game console, better have some actual games for it that aren't just reprogs of existing ones I already got, or pretty-glitchy clones of somethign that's been re-hashed a million times and play like garbage.

The console gaming industry is on the verge of another crash like back in 83 cause of that, back then it was endless slap together craptitles with some movie name on em, and these days it's the endless rehash of the same crummy gameplay with a pretty graphic shell on it - which is why retro games are exploding in popularity.

The PC, outside of business, is on a slow descent too, as Microshit continues to fuck up intolerably and users find themselves locked out of their own hardware often enough to go looking for other solutions, because if you can not, will not, give the customer what they WANT, they can and will eventually stop takin your shit and look somewhere else.

This is prolly the best explaination of WHY Vista sucks ass that you could read - and Win7 is worse.

Bingo. And whoever wrote the code for Vista/Windows 7 wasn't thinking, "Gee, I better make sure this can run every program that's ever been written before!" At some point, they stop supporting old software. PN's just mad because he didn't do his research before he spent his money.

I knew when I bought my most recent Mac that it wasn't going to run any of my old OS9 software. I'm okay with that. I also knew I couldn't daisy-chain my old SCSI devices off it, and again, I'm okay with that, because I've moved forward. Next thing you know, PN will be whinging about his new computer not being able to run his dot-matrix printer, and having no place to plug in his old dial-up modem.

Actually, I agree with you on this point, but for a different reason. The Apple "App" idea is going to spread to gaming; in fact, it already is. You can get online "expansion packs" or special weapons that integrate themselves into your games. Watch for that to spread into every avenue of the gaming world. You'll buy the basic map, say, of Grand Theft Auto VII - and then you'll start buying characters, each of whom will come with some weapons and stories, but none of which will allow you to play the game to completion until you have ALL of them. That's just one idea off the top of my head, but you get the basic idea behind it.

Similarly, computer "programs" as we know them are dead. Pray that you're not heavily invested in Adobe Systems. Soon, you'll buy the kernel of a program, the bare basics, and then you'll add on as you need other abilities. Microsoft Excel is a fabulous spreadsheet program, and I use it nearly every day. But you know what? I bet I don't touch 95% of its capabilities, ever. So why pay $289 for it? Short answer: I didn't. I wouldn't. I'll use the GoogleDocs spreadsheet, and hope they add some more functionality while I work with it. Ditto the word program. And then illustration/drawing programs, photo editing, etc.

Companies that try to sell you a $999 program in a box with a disk and no manual (gotta find that online, and print it out yourself!) are going to go by the wayside.

Meanwhile, yes on the PS2's backwards compatibility, but you notice it only went back one generation. Early PS3 units had that capability, too, but the one I bought last summer doesn't. I'm not crushed, since I've already got a PS2 that works fine, but yes, it would have been nice to have the compatibility.

They'd still be makin ya put a quarter in, if they could, Mikey - same with music, movies, any kinda content, and one reason I stay the hell away from any device I don't have complete control over (like Kindle, for obvious fekkin reasons) because given half a damn chance, they'd charge you for EACH time you played a song, EACH time you read a book, and you know what - fuck that, fuck them, and fuck the EULA.

I pay the money, you give me the product, the WHOLE FUCKIN PRODUCT, and I take it home, and once it's on my property it's MINE and I do what I please with it, period - it just don't work any other way with me.

This pay full product price for permission to borrow it (license, whatever) with a list of conditions on how you can use it, and KEEP PAYIN, that's a *rental*, and if I want a rental I'll go to Blockbuster thankee muchly.
(Car Leases are the same kind of fuckery)

That's just like companies who offer "unlimited" internet, phone, what have you, and then scream a bloody fit when you actually USE what you paid for.

And eventually, Mikey, it won't stop with minor shit like the vandalism and the rather smallist boobytrap bomb Paypal got hit with, eventually they're gonna piss someone unstable but crafty off, and take a real pounding (kinda like the IRS did) and then copycatting and all the rest.

Cause greed has a limit, it's the same dynamic that got Marie Antoinettes head lopped off, brought into the modern day - screw people ENOUGH, and out come the torches and pitchforks.
(For just $29.99, get your riot-kit here, folks!)

While the backwards compatability was a selling point, it was more to avoide clutter, as very few games are re-released on new systems, so re-buying games for the new system was never really an issue.

Some games are re-released, but it's fairly few, especially when the ps2 was launched.

Well, the oddball part of that, Story - was the Xbox/Xbox360 thing.

They promised, but did not deliver, backwards compatibility, and many of the titles are available for both consoles although in fact, and in play, are virtually identical, NFS Carbon as an example.

Except that the Xbox360 ones were $59.99 and the Xbox ones were $29.99 or less - for the same damn near identical game, so which one did folks jump on with both feet ?

That was one reason Microsoft "encouraged" Gamestop to drop carryin Xbox games, although declining sales of em in general were also part of it.

Still, if you wanna sell me a next gen console, you BETTER have a damn good reason for me to want it (Mass Effect sold me that Xbox360, I'll have you know.)

Yeah, I still haven't found that much use for the PS3 I got, except that it is a pretty darn good Blu-Ray player. And I just got Firefly and Serenity on Blu-Ray, so I'll have something to watch this summer! :) As far as games go, I haven't really found any that grab my attention for any amount of time. Gran Turismo 5 is fun, and there's a certain novelty in the online racing, in that it amazes me that I can be running against people in Brazil, Japan, England, Canada, and Germany, all at the same time, and can instant message them immediately after the race.

MS alleges Vista7 can emulate XP for installing older software at 16-bit, same as on XP. But of course that don't work.
