Niki, the word "conservative" has become quite oxymoronic in the modern political vernacular.

When was the last time you met any "conservative" who was actually into conservation? "Conservative" these days, in political parlance, means "Drill, Baby, Drill!" and "Spill, Baby, Spill!" They aren't trying to CONSERVE anything, except that they're trying to conserve their corporate masters' ability to rape the land, the sea, the planet, and all its people.

Hence, "Conservative" is an oxymoron, n'est ce pas?

Mike: Non, ce n'est pas ça...and my apologies--I read quickly down the line and thought it was yet another of his. Silly me, as he'd never consider A Conservative as an oxymoron.

But no, I'm an English nut, remember? A lot of this stuff has strayed SO far from oxymorons it's ridiculous. Just because conservatives aren't' conservative doesn't mean anything. Maybe you could try Neocon Conservative or Moderate Conservative, those would be oxymorons. If you want to get into vernaculars, I guess "Blue Dog Democrat" would be an oxymoron, as would RINO Republican and DINO Democrat...but the rest is politics, like “Christian Coalition”. If I missed it before, “Religious Right” would be, given it’s current term. But Christian is a religion, Coalition is a group. Not an oxymoron.

Okay, we’ve gotten way off track here. Oxymoron: “a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness”. We can come up with some great ones, but you have to THINK and it has to be contradictory or incongruous (as in cruel kindness).

That definition makes me think of “tough love”...

“Libertarian Socialist” is right on the money, I missed that one I read so fast...that one's GREAT!

But a lot of these are snarks, like “Responsible Parenting”—can’t just call it an oxymoron because you feel that way.

Enemy friendly (a term I’ve heard use by the military) is also excellent.

How about “Democratic unity”? That one’s kind of a DOUBLE oxymoron, in that “Democrat” in its literal term is oxymoronic for “unity”, and democrats and unity are also an oxymoron, currently.

“Democratic party meeting” is a toughie too. “Party” and “Meeting” yes, but how do you figure the Democratic? If you mean “Democratic Party” “meeting”, yeah, but again, that’s just party and meeting, really.

Democratic, order by the people, more or less, but a definite concept of order to the word, you don't just say "the movie flopped because democracy reigns.." no there could be a lot of reasons why the movie flops. It can flop and get an 8.5 on IMDb. So democracy would be more like the rating on imdb.

A party is chaotic, not democratic. A party is also fun. A meeting is ordering, but typically somewhat of a dictatorship, and not fun.

you can dislike conservatives, but that doesn't make them a haiku, or a feghoot, a limerick or a rhyme, or even a pun.
