Sig Your argument is no more valid than saying since we don't see fossils being made any more, all the fossils which have ever BEEN made are made. Idiocy.
But we DO see fossils being made. All you have to do is look into peat bogs and estuaries. We also see coal being made... for which there is a continuous record. (peat, lignite, anthracite etc) What we do NOT see is oil being made... nor do we see any evidence that is has been made in the recent geologic past.

Yanno, you said "Ask any geologist." I will. In fact, I'll ask OIL geologists. Will you defer to their expert opinion? Or will you move the goalposts again?

Whether you do or not, I'm not going to enable you further in covering over your grief with denial. I'll post their answers, and that's it. This discussion is pointless, and counterproductive for you. Please learn to process your feelings in a more fruitful manner.

As long as you don't cherry pick the responses to suit your view point, and post all that is said... by all means, let everyone see and learn on this issue.

Right. And a " fruitful manner " is one which allows me to blindly agree with you ? Sorry, not gonna happen. Please, you were almost making sense, then you tacked on that nonsensical bit a the end.

Oil is still being made. I'll stand by that. Whether the process allows for humans to wait around and wait for it, is another matter. I never said that it might not take millions of years. But you said yourself. Peat is the early forms of coal, and that process continues on, right before our eyes.

But I've got work to do,and I've wasted enough time bickering over pointless non issues.

Snark and bicker all you want. I'll get back, eventually.

Oil can be made all the time, to think that a process that takes millions of years, and specific conditions is going to keep up with demand is pure idiocy, though.

"Stick with the truth, which is too large to be encapsulated by any ideology."

That's a nice thought, however we have yet to be given the truth by any source. BP lies every day, Obama Admin. & Coast Guard "accept" the lie, and media reports on the lie as new news. I do not see any truth anywhere coming out of this so far. The only truth I can draw from this is that they cannot stop the leak, and that the Gulf states are destined for long-term ecological and economic disaster.

If you have not yet seen this, you may enjoy it. It's probably not too far off the mark.

This is absurd, I didn't believe he could be serious!

Okay, let's start with your theory. Even if oil IS being produced, our use far far exceeds the production rate. Also, we are now tending to tap into sources that are only partially transformed into oil, meaning we are moving up the chain toward less and less usable sources and eliminating the future development of the more ideal sources.

It takes millions of years to create a tappable deposit of oil, but only about 200 years for us to have used a very large proportion of that. At these rate differences, there is effectively no new oil being created, at least none that will serve any usefulness for us.

This theory is more denial to avoid fear. We're going to have a hard time switching to anything, certainly any ONE thing, to power our love of power, so it's easy to buy into the idea that oil is an infinite part of the earth which we can tap into forever. It's really sad to see people, at this time in history, who so badly want to believe we can go on as we've been going on, and are trying to find reasons to believe we can.

By the way, Kane; I've been married for 35+ years, I don't need to go looking for "a guy". And my weight is 180, which at six feet tall, is 20 lbs. overweight. I'm working to lose that remaining 20 lbs., so you're pathetically off the mark.

The fact that you don't think I'm serious says a lot about you...I'm sad you aren't more trusting of the world, but given the internet, it's to surprising. I got "took" by buying off the internet last year; luckily my bank made it up for me and now I have insurance if it happens again. But anyone here should know me by now, and if you really think I would go to all that trouble to get a lousey $250, that IS sad!

Me, I'm damned frustrated they haven't called me up. I've been pursuing it every day; I know I said they'd need replacements and it might take a while, but I want to get DOWN there--NOW, dammit! I can't just "go", it would be futile as they wouldn't let me do anything; I have to wait for some organization or other to say they'll take me.

WHY I'm explaining this I don't know; probably because that outrageous statement pissed me off. I'm going to have to buy a breathing unit, which I've found at our local OSH for painting, because I'm hearing people are getting sick there from inhaling fumes. They also say they're running out of gear, from gloves to boots. I have my own boots from my time at Marineworld, but I'm also going to take a couple of pairs of heavy gloves, so they don't have to provide me with anything.

I'm still working on this, and I'll be damned if I don't get the chance to do this, it's something I think about every day and plan for.

Fat? No. A con artist? No. Think what you will. If by some fluke (which I REFUSE to think about) I can't go, everyone's money will be either returned or donated to those DOWN there, with receipts for those who want it donated provided to each contributor.

Lastly, I wouldn't meet you if my life depended on it; there are many here I'd ADORE to meet, but you're definitely not one of them!

This thread has become totally absurd; the idea that we can go on using oil infinitely and that anyone actually believes (or wants to believe) that saddens me deeply. How will we get off it in time if people delude themselves into thinking we don't need to?!?!

AURaptor: I'm a geologist, and I've heard Out to the Black espouse this theory about oil coming from the mantle. I've thought about it and thought about it, really tried to give O2TB a reasonable shot at looking at the theory with an open mind.

It was a theory the Russians came up with, and then abandoned by the 1980s because it wasn't an accurate depiction of what people were finding. You don't find oil in conjunction with igneous rock, let alone mantle rock.

It's in pure opposition to the density gradient as you go deeper. If the world was molten at one point during formation, and it probably was, then heavier material would sink towards the core, and lighter material would remain close to the surface. Carbon is a light element, and carbon molecules tend not to be very dense. Similarly, so is hydrogen. This stuff is going to be staying near and forming near the surface of the earth at that time. That's why most of the carbon on earth is considered to be within the biosphere. Natural diamonds are an exception, they form under pressure, and carbon involved in natural diamonds was probably introduced to that environment through tectonic activity.

Sig is right that Oil tends to be found in oil-rich sandstone and oil rich shales (we can't really process the shales very well, but people are hard at work on this). Oil is almost certainly sediment-buried organic material heated and under pressure. The oldest oil you could potentially find I'd imagine would be about Devonian age, that's about the time plants started to appear in earnest. Most land-based oil is found in the Mesozoic period, lots of complex organisms appearing on land and lots of organics accumulating in ponds, then erosion and tectonic activity can bury things nicely. Tectonic activity can also put things under a lot of heat and pressure, and faults can enable mobility if fluids in the absence of pore space.

I have to think about the ocean floor, it's possible something else is at work there, but the areas where people drill for oil tend to be tectonically active, and I would suspect a similar mechanism is at work as what seems to produce oil on land. They tend to be drilling on the continental shelf and slope, where changing sea level can lay down different kinds of sediments, such as the sand they like to drill into. The ocean floor is no more than 200 million years old, however, it's constantly subducted under continents.

Now that might be a really good place to look for oil, maybe this is what people mean when they talk about mantle oil (it would be near the mantle, within 10 km), but it would still technically be crust and asthenosphere. And I'm also not sure how wise it would be to try to drill into a subduction zone. Good way to melt your drill bit and bring up lava instead of oil, I'd think. Then again, oil being less dense then rock, it probably melts before the rock does and percolates up through fault lines.

In any case, as you go deeper, the oil WOULD be discontinuous going deeper than the Devonian until you hit any subducted ocean oil. I would say that no, we haven't always been producing oil. If we were, we'd see more evidence of it pre-cambrian stromatolite beds and such, I'd imagine.

Theoretically you could eventually produce oil from newer buried organics, but it depends on the depth of burial and the tectonic activity. It's also unlikely to be occurring at the rate that we can pump out the oil, otherwise oil fields would never stop producing. But you can tap out an oil bed.

Good input. I know it may seem like I'm walking a thin line here, but only because I'm trying to make my meaning to be very specific.

That there needs to be bio matter ( and lots of it ) first, in order for the process of oil to be made, is understandable. So the notion that all the oil that's ever been created was done so, long, long in the past, and there isn't any more being made, kinda misses on 2 points.

First, I was talking about the PROCESS of how oil is made. That's never going to stop, unless all life ceases to exist.

Or the Earth becomes geologically dead....either way, we'r screwed, and it's a moot point.

Second, and here's were things get a bit dicey. Just because the PROCESS of oil creation continues, doesn't mean that we'll have an infinite amount of it, regardless of how much we use, or at what ever rates we'd like. I never said the Earth would go about replenishing oil, so we have nothing to worry about.

We could use up all the oil that's easily found, wait around for a few million years, then start using it again...if we were immortals. But we're not. Well, some of us are, but not everyone. Not yet.

Here's my point. There's lots of oil out there to be found. Found, drilled and used. Lots and lots. Also, even some oil wells which had been written off as dry, are now being found to have " filled up " again. Likely from below, where, as you say, more oil exists, and is rising ...because it's lighter than the rock. I'm not saying ALL oil wells are filling back up to full, and we have an endless supply.... that'd be silly. Of course that's not happening. That we can tell. Yet. Might be just the last tiny fraction is finding its way up, and that's all there is.

Obviously, we must conserve. We must utilize what we have, because we won't be using oil at such rates for eternity. But there's still a freakin' lot of oil out there, to be found. And used. No matter how much we hate to say it, or how much it offends our optimistic nature to admit it, we're going to be using oil for a long time. Best if we accept that fact, and try like hell to make good use of what we have.

In ALL areas.

Hmm, yeah, I can see that. I don't really like being oil dependent, because I don't particularly like oil, it's nasty stuff as we've seen. But getting off oil would be extremely difficult without time travel.

It's also possible that some of the assessments of remaining global oil only lasting fifty more years (put out by BP, no less) might be a scheme to decrease supply and increase demand.

There might still be value in investing in alternative energy, though. I don't want it to be driven by some batshit crazy globalist movement, but sustainable non-polluting energy sources does have some draw.

Jones Act absolutely applies, should have been waived - BY THE PRESIDENT - and the proper F-ing ships should have been here - WEEKS AGO !!!

You LITERALLY have no god damn clue what you're talking about!!!

" Three days after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, the Dutch government offered to help.

It was willing to provide ships outfitted with oil-skimming booms, and it proposed a plan for building sand barriers to protect sensitive marshlands.

The response from the Obama administration and BP, which are coordinating the cleanup:“The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks'," said Geert Visser, consul general for the Netherlands in Houston.

Now, almost seven weeks later, as the oil spewing from the battered well spreads across the Gulf and soils pristine beaches and coastline, BP and our government have reconsidered."

Oh, well said, Magons. Been missing you, or have I 'missed' you lately? Eloquent as ever, and absolutely right on.

It's the right that says government SHOULDN'T be involved, SHOULDN'T regulate, remember Crap? You've said it often enough here, you can't back out now. You're screaming and yelling about the government (Obama) not doing "anything"; why aren't you calling BP? They're the free enterprise that wasn't regulated and "regulated" themselves, just like you always want. So why are you blaming the very government you DO NOT WANT involved in private enerprise?

Answer that if you can. Because you can't...free enterprise wants what's good for itself, and damn the torpedoes (or the Gulf, in this case). If it doesn't touch them personally, if it doesn't affect their bottom line, THEY DON'T GIVE A SHIT. Simple as that.

If BP had been properly regulated and inspected, we wouldn't be here. If MMS hadn't been left to get high and screw Big Oil lobbyists, we wouldn't be here. IF private enterprise HAD policed itself, we wouldn't be here. NOW you start screaming at Obama to clean up the mess. Yes, he should, and he's not, and I'm furious, but I'm not the one saying free enterprise can take care of us. I'm not that stupid, nor are many millions of other perfectly intelligent, free-thinking people.

And WE'RE not the ones "screaming" obscenities at everyone else on this forum because the government we've been arguing against all this time isn't there to do enough when we start wanting it suddenly. Guess the anger goes in all directions for you; me, I know which direction to aim it.

But keep trying to make it about the Jones Act, I realize you can't let go of that despite the facts, it feeds something in you so far be it from me to take that away.

Far be it from any of us to try and reason with you about anything that doesn't fit your "partisan jihad", because that's what it is: "Nothing bad exists that isn't Obama's fault personally". We understand. Go on with your fantasies.

Yeah, Mike, I got a (tiny) kick out of that one. You can almost see the smoke coming out of his ears. Hey, he's gotta blame someone, along with Obama, for everything. So it's us. Poor thing, I hope he hasn't got a dog he can kick.

The death of an entire ecosystem really is a laugh riot, isn't it Kwickie ?

Again, you show your true , pathetic colors.

No one ever said NO regulations, but then, lying is all you can ever do. You're not smart enough to converse with anyone intelligently, all you can do is mock, ridicule, make fun of and quip about millions of dead fish, dolphin, gator, shrimp, birds, oyster....

Am I making you laugh ?

Shall I tickle you more w/ the hi-larious tales of 10's of 1000's of people not just losing their jobs, but their livelihoods, their homes, their legacy .. of passing on their family businesses down to their children....oh man. I can see why you and other Big Gov't lovers just giggle away at all that.

Funny stuff, huh?

Wildlife dead

Jobs gone

Tourism gone

Entire communities, all along the coast, becoming silent and empty. Homes left and abandoned....

"THE GOD DAMN COAST IS DEAD, AND BP DOESN'T CARE!"

Actually, it's not dead, but it will be a long, long, LONG time recovering, and probably never be what it once was. Just like Prince William Sound. Remember them? DID you remember them until this happened? I did, and so did others, which is why we were aghast at "drill, baby, drill" and the deregulation by Cheney/Dumbya. But you thought they were just great because they didn't want to "interfere" with private enterprise, remember?

The fact remains, "you're so busy sucking free enterprise's dick, you can't even place blame where it's due" (I didn't say that). It's definitely a jihad; you can't see past your own wall, and just like a fundamentalist religion, that blinds you.

No, we don't find the situation amusing in the slightest. We're ALL absolutely furious and devastated by what's happened. We just don't attack EACH OTHER, but rather aim our anger where it belongs. You know, BP? The guys who DID THIS? We're angry at Obama and the government and frustrated at how things are going, but we also recognize that things are being diverted, covered up and stalled BY BP for their own purposes.

However, some of us find YOU mildly amusing because of your blind hatred and how you get head up and fling your sword in every direction, I guess hoping if you wipe out everyone around you, it will make everything okay again. It won't, but it's almost laughable to watch you try.

Almost. Right now I find little to laugh about. These threads have done a bit to lighten my mood (watching people get red-faced and scream incoherently can sometimes be a bit entertaining), but I'm afraid I'll have to turn it over to you, Mike, my back is starting to ache and there are things I need to do. Make me proud, eh?

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Okay Rappy... back to oil creation.

There are two theories of oil creation, so the first thing is- which theory are YOU referring to?

A) One is the crackpot abiogenisis theory. That is the theory I assumed you were referring to, since you tend towards crackpot theories. In this theory, carbon from the deep somehow magically turns to oil (instead of diamond, graphite, or carbide). That is the theory of oil creation which has no evidence for it whatsover. If that was NOT what you proposed, I apologize.

B) The other is the biogenesis theory of oil creation, where oil is formed from algal mats which have been changed under pressure. THAT is a credible theory. Along those lines, there are younger and older oil reserviors: Some of them are found in rock as young as a million years (However, that doesn't mean they formed in that rock, merely that they were trapped in it. Their actual formation could have happened much earlier). The oldest are about 600 million years old. MOST oil reservoirs are in the 600-65 million-year-old range.

www.searchanddiscovery.net/documents/2004/horn/images/horn.pdf

While oil creation is still ongoing, we are using up the entire world's oil creation history right now. It is unlikely that we would be able to wait for more oil to be created.

Meanwhile, Dubai broke ground on a new skyscraper over twice as tall as the twin towers three years after 9/11, and it's open for business now. During Bush's entire two terms in office, all we were left with at Ground Zero was a big steaming hole.

Where's your messiah now, Raptard? On a golf course? Giving self-help/get-rich-quick seminars at $15 a pop?

Best if we accept that fact, and try like hell to make good use of what we have.

In ALL areas.

Welcome to 1978.

Sig: I was unclear on the specific source of the biological material commonly thought to create oil. Petroleum geology is not my field, environmental geology is, though I've taken enough structural and sedimentary geology and geophysics to know a little about the oil industry.

600 million years would argue the case for other wide spread organic material aside from plants (Devonian is 350 million to 400 million years ago), and algal mats would fit that description. I still wonder why we don't see oil in stromatolites.

Hey, all Obama has to do to make the Gulf "in better shape than it was before" is clean up some of the oil. Voila! It's in better shape than it was BEFORE THE OIL WAS CLEANED UP. :)

On this matter, make no mistake. I want you to go fuck yourself long and hard, as well as anyone who agrees with you. I got no use for you. --Auraptor

This vile and revolting malice - this is their true colors, always has been, you're just seeing it without the mask of justifications and excuses they hide it behind, is all. Make sure to remember it once they put the mask back on. --Fremdfirma

I asked myself on the way to a local whore house(yes, I said hello to your mother)"Why does Kwicko hate Bush so much?", as I was fingering your mother's hairy vagina..it hit me. The only scenario I could come up with went something like this:

*slurp, slurp, cough, cough...Kwicko pops out from under the covers*

Kwicko: "If you don't shave your balls I am not doing this anymore. I've asked you a hundred times"

Frank: "Stop your bitching bitch. I gave you the nickname Kwicko, because you are never down there for long"

Kwicko: "That is not the point poodle, My tongue feels like it was tared and feathered"

*Slap*

Frank: "Don't you talk to me like that ever again! Now go get me your father...He doesn't whine like you"

Kwicko: "Oh, Please poodle. I'm sorry. I'll never say it again."

I have feeling you don't like Bush beer or mowing your grass.........

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

We need to stop this continuing escalation of nonsense insults and aggression. It's become a neverending war, and no one likes that.

I miss being able to have a conversation, and even disagree, without insults needing to be exchanged.

What's the point of being here if it's just monkeys throwing shit at each other?

We still do have conversations, but it requires some digging to find them.

I admire the effort to stop the fighting. I mostly got too tired to try to intervene.

Who is fighting? I was just working on a screenplay, I got sick of poetry and thought I'd try my hand at something else. All names are fictional
