Hello,

I recently read a book about a- pardon if I misspell- Shear cropper. The conditions of his life were very much like slavery.

I am shocked to discover that sort of thing may be still going on, and in my home state, no less.

Not really surprised at all.

Especially that they specifically target teenagers and runaways. Bet Frem has things he can tell us.

The sad reality is we are all becoming enslaved by a welfare system overwrought with entitlements. We are quickly becoming programmed to expect this and apathy towards hard work and ingenuity is rampant. Why work hard when you can vote for a politician that will steal money from another man(or generation even) for you? Really, why? What is the endgame? Generation after generation sitting on the front porch drinking 40oz. beers is not good for any community.

Your mom seems to like it. Last I heard, she was taking on five to six guys at once, and she likes to give the biggest guys backdoor access, and all she wants in return is a couple crack rocks and five bucks.

I guess you couldn't really call her a slave, since she gets paid. And she really, really enjoys the work.

Hello,

We need to stop this continuing escalation of nonsense insults and aggression. It's become a neverending war, and no one likes that.

I miss being able to have a conversation, and even disagree, without insults needing to be exchanged.

What's the point of being here if it's just monkeys throwing shit at each other?

I hear Haken might be implementing an ignore feature on the new board version. I'm hoping that Kwicko uses it on AURaptor and Kaneman, and they use it on him.

They seem to genuinely have fun fighting, though, so maybe it ought to be an ignore confined to individual forums, and maybe we can give them a battle arena or something to duke it out. I wonder if that would help.

What do you think, guys?

Hello,

I favor an ignore feature. I'd also favor a thread moderator feature. Where each thread creator could moderate his own thread. Kind of like making each thread a house where you could decide on the decorum.

People who host well-managed threads would probably get the best discussions going on. Threadmakers would soon gain reputations for their fairness or lack thereof. People serious about intelligent debate and learning would congregate into threads they feel are open and safe.

It's my dream.

I don't really like the idea of moderation either. I like people being able to express their grievances, especially because you all on occasion like to stir things up a bit. That's what brought me to stay here in the RWED, the few times I've been on forums that were unmoderated then went moderated, it was disasterous. I appreciate an unmoderated system that trusts everyone to be responsible for themselves.

An ignore system would make it all a matter of personal choice, though I'd still like some forum where ignore doesn't function, for you guys where you can let loose as much as you want.

Kane, the truth of it is more complicated than that, cause the war machine costs more, for no return - and one of the main problems with assistance to the poor is that it's set up to be only just barely NOT enough, enough to string them along, keep em hopin, but never actually enough to climb out of the hole, thus ever dependant on the state which is also encouraging them to feed those kids to the war machine when they get old enough.

That's bullshit - I say we cut off the war machine and get those people on their feet with the extra dosh it'd require, and yes, there'd be a couple slackers and draggers but dude, collective punishment is always a tyrannical act, and MOST of those people would give up a lot to be done with the endless rounds of chain yanking and humiliation they have to put up with to get that assistance - why you think our golden rope program works ?

Cause mosta those folk would jump on any opportunity to break the endless cycle of privation, desperation and humiliation that is trying to survive on that assistance, even the most beaten down of people still got a little pride somewhere - in your efforts to dehumanize folks you should pity, you seem to have forgotten that.

HOW we "help" them is if anything, crueler than not helping them at all, and if they weren't taxed into poverty to feed the war machine they'd not need it so much in the first damn place.

So, dismantle the war machine, and use the money to FIX this shit, it's really not simpler than that - stuff like Mikey's marshall plan, we *could* make this country everything it pretends to be, but first, the war machine, and all it's alphabet-soup hangers-on, they gotta go.

I actually LIKE the fact that you CAN'T ignore what other people post.

Even if you don't like it. ESPECIALLY if you dont like it.

The idea that you can just isolate yourself and only talk to others whom agree with you is... well...

Is "circle-jerk" an appropriate description?

(Yeah its not very nice, but I think it sums up best the idea of like-minded people sitting around agreeing with each other.. and never HAVING to listen to others)

Why would you want people to be forced to listen to you?

Wulf: People have a right to disrupt thread topics, but it becomes frustrating when people who don't argee want to discuss something and can't because of other stuff going on.

An ignore feature would help this, and maybe we can have a MIRROR RWED forum or something where the ignore doesn't work and everyone can read all the responses. That way people can still go see insults pertaining to them or if they're being called out, without a whole bunch of toggle settings. The arguments and flame wars and snarky responses would still be preserved somewhere for their recipient to see them, this would just be an extra layer of insulation for people who aren't involved.

Well, here... you have the freedome not to click on a link, or read a post. Even to ignore the site altogether.

But hey, by all means. IMPLEMENT the ignore feature. That way, you will never have to read, think or deal with opinions other than your own.

AND *IM* called isolationist.... grrr

Hell, do you think I like reading Nix posts? Or Kwicks? No, I don't. But sometimes they actually have a GOOD point. Something I can think about, maybe even agree with.

But by all means! Lets turn a goddamn firefly site into a seperate but equal area!

You die-hard libs... go over there, you die-hard neo -cons... over there.... freaks, this way...

and make sure noone talks to each other. Or god above, be forced to see other opinions...

Can't have that.. nope. Might cause people to communicate. Discuss isssues... even find understanding.

Nope.

Hey, I agree. I think that generational welfare enslavement is just as bad. The military industrial complex creates jobs, at least. It just wastes our money and ruins our country's rep. The welfare state kills peoples souls, it steals from generations of people their chance of having a good life...

Now, I don't WANT people to censor themselves, I like cussing it up now and then myself. So that's in part why I proposed a mirror forum, so that after work, I could go back and read the posts of people I've had to tune out of a thread, simply because they're rated M for mature.

Hello,

No. Injecting comments about Niki's hair maintenance into a political discussion isn't an opposing view. It's just vulgar and rude.

Also, I don't hang out with people who are routinely insulting and vulgar in my real life. You clearly do. You're Free to Choose. So am I.

In real life, I can walk away from the man on the street corner who is shouting insults, and continue to have a civil conversation with people who I choose to interact with.

Now we have a technology allows that same scenario in virtual space.

The vile and revolting person loses their power to be heard. It's possible that some level of civility in discourse may become necessary to interact with the majority of society. Social pressure forces change for anyone who wants to deal with folks outside their pig pen, folks who prefer not to revel in the manure.

Deal with that.

Hello Wulf,

It's always possible that if you had something insightful or wise to say, one might find your vulgarity worth putting up with.

"Take that bourgeoisie attitude somewhere else. Sompleace it might be appreciated. The UK perhaps. Or hell, the NYT loves that shit."

Or you might just say something like that.

Perhaps you live in a 'non-bourgeoisie' place where, when you are having a conversation with a friend, you enjoy people storming up to her and making jokes about her pubic hair. Perhaps where you live, in some imaginary land, you eat that right up and want to hear more, and spend lots of time with that person, hanging on their every word for the wisdom they are imparting.

But yeah, in the elitist place where I live, we tend to avoid those sorts of folks. Plenty of people have opposing views to my own, and don't wallow in that stuff.

The vile and revolting person loses their power to be heard. It's possible that some level of civility in discourse may become necessary to interact with the majority of society. Social pressure forces change for anyone who wants to deal with folks outside their pig pen, folks who prefer not to revel in the manure.

Deal with that.

Spare me you cunt. Don't come to a public forum if you don't like vulgarity. Start your own god damn site and moderate it yourself. Really. You start every post with ...Hello,....I'm starting to think you are a fucking retard in an asylum or you are gay too...When you make the rules I'll listen. I have been here longer than you. Haken deals with me in his way. We have a respectful relationship. See, he doesn't like alliance types either and enjoys my frankness.. And i say fuck him too. remember, I was the first to say Haken is dead...Or am I Haken?

Genius, I'm Haken's sock-puppet. Really. I start a board and use Haken. You are not only gay, but thick in the skull. I think I am going to ban you soon....

Hello,

Once the ignore feature is implemented, I will be able to moderate you right out of my world. I'll be happy to debate with fireflyfans who may not share my viewpoints, but share my disdain for calling people cunts. And all here, on the same site. It's a brighter tomorrow, I tell you.

Hello Mike,

The astonishing thing is that these people are somehow insulted that someone may want to ignore them. Why should they care if their hateful rants no longer appear on my screen? Am I really their target audience? I can't believe that I am.

It is dumbfounding. People who profess to hate you and me - and they'll be insulted if we're not insulted. Go figure.

Meanwhile, we CAN start ignoring people any time we choose. I think rather than sink to Kane's level any more, I'll just exercise my option to ignore him/her/it. I had forgotten: it feeds off of negative energy, and gets turned on by the abuse. Ignore it, and it will starve and die.

Oh, and I seem to be in a state of decidedly "not-banned". Toldja RL didn't have the goods to do it.

And for the record ...I will not implement an ignore feature. However, you are FREE on my board to debate the impossible...carry on in dream world. That the meaning of this site, I created, goes over your head is HILARIOUS. It hasn't always been this way.... I think I should ban you

DREAMTROVE

There appear to be two threads here, woven together, so one at a time.

Frem and River have a point: what drives the system is it's incessant spending, spending which not only puts us in debt through the control of our currency, but also acts directly to our detriment destroying our lives and livelihoods.

Entitlement spending creates apathy, a non-working, unproductive society, and breaks the "more work = more pay" balance of society, so you reach a dead zone where more work becomes worthless or a liability. Additionally, it's true you never bail out of it, and on the side it creates a publicly funded drug industry, fueling both sides of the conflict.

The war kills us, our enemies, friends, and our image, as well as destroying everything that is build by the MIC. And by people in the way. It also hurts the environment, creates enemies, and increases lure dependence on everything from allies to international militias, fair-weather friends and our international military presence to say nothing of oil.

Each cost us a cool trillion or more, which, regardless of how it is spent, is largely borrowed, and those "loans" generate interest and balances for the banks, which collect interest, digging us deeper into debt.

Solutions? Hmm. This is worth thinking about. I don't think Frem's theory that we can cut off their supply of jackboots is workable. I suspect that they're already lined up to take foreign fighters even fi we can eliminate the jackboot mindset entirely, which i doubt we can. Even if this fails them, they will always have robots.

I guess off the top of my head I would say the best measure of defense would be to utterly destroy the currency.

On the other topic. I gnawed about this the whole time I was responding to the other. I guess I'm coming down against block. I thought it had merits, but only because I'd like to see distracting utter wastes that wreck threads just disappear. I am of coursed referring to certain pairings of users who, when they cross, can't seem to keep it in their pants. That said, I think they could just evolve some discipline.

Here's the thing which sinks ignore for me: you have the rig to defend yourself. If one user were to ignore another, than they would never hear a mischaracterization by that userm or a request for correction from that user regarding a mischaracterization. So, if someone were to say "user was gung ho for war with afgh" or some such position, and then said user said "um, no" and one user was blocked, then no correction could take place.

Personally, I see no reason to block any user.

Mince, lol

Mike, nice catch

Oh, and a third, the original thread

Yes, it's been going on a while. I knew someone who used to live next to that slave labour camp, the people always struck her as odd. The thing is that they made no real secret of their business, so she just figured they were paying the workers. Which maybe they were, then. There weren't any armed guards, yet.

Splice or not I was faithful to your message, which was about denying (other) peoples' freedom - I only meant to highlight that fact.

Freedom to walk away and leave the thread/fireflyfans site is freedom to be harrassed and intimidated.

For the record if there were an ignore function, right now, I personally wouldn't choose to use it on anyone. Apart from maybe Wulf's videos.

:-p

Heads should roll
