Detonating nuclear bomb at BP oil spill site could end all life on planet. I don't really ever believe doomsday scenarios, but this is a legitimate concern even if it doesn't end the world. There is strong evidence supporting the claim that the P-T boundary event might have been caused by methane from the Siberian traps. It's just about the accepted explanation nowadays. And the oceans have a crap ton of methane themselves.

Of course, the Siberian Traps also still have a lot of methane, and people are worried about the permafrost melting and releasing it.

Technically we've detonated nukes in the ocean before (it's why we have radioactive hydrogen isotopes that we can use to date how long water has been away from the surface). Detonated on the ocean floor? Hmm.

I think the fear researchers have is that the oceans warming up in general might broadly release a lot of methane from the ocean floor around the globe. A nuke would be a comparatively smaller surface area. But then, considering how much shit we've burned off in the gulf to try to clean up this disaster, who knows? Maybe just a little bit of methane added to the situation would be a tipping point.

If BP causes us to go extinct, I want to give Tony Howard the finger before I die.
