Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I see Ms. Half-Term Governor has decided God can take care of the Gulf disaster:
Quote:

When President Obama invoked God during his prime time speech, he was criticized for going in that direction. But will the critics be as ardent in response to Sarah Palin’s statement that what is needed is “divine intervention”?
She twittered: “Gulf disaster needs divine intervention as man’s efforts have been futile”. She inspired Louisiana’s government to do the same, apparently:
Quote:

While cleanup crews and technical teams continue efforts to stop crude gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana lawmakers are proposing a different approach: prayer.

State senators designated Sunday as a day for citizens to ask for God's help dealing with the oil disaster.

"Thus far efforts made by mortals to try to solve the crisis have been to no avail," state Sen. Robert Adley said in a statement released after last week's unanimous vote for the day of prayer. "It is clearly time for a miracle for us."

The resolution names Sunday as a statewide day of prayer in Louisiana and calls on people of all religions throughout the Gulf Coast "to pray for an end to this environmental emergency, sparing us all from the destruction of both culture and livelihood."

Also Sunday, wildlife officials were planning to transport and release 40 pelicans that rescuers rehabilitated after finding them covered with oil. The birds will be moved from New Orleans, Louisiana, to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Port Aransas, Texas.

Oh, I’m SO glad to hear they’re relocating those pellies to Texas, where they’ll be safe! It made me very uncomfortable to think they were relocating them to Florida, given the possibility they’d be re-oiled if/when it gets there!

Of course, it’s not the first time Sarahcuda asked people to pray for her:
Quote:

In June, Palin gave a speech to the graduating class of commission. In the video, she weaves together religion and her energy plans, asking the audience to pray for the natural-gas pipeline project she's been pushing. "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.
We all remember her saying it was “God’s plan” that she become VP, and praying against witchcraft in her church, but even during the campaign, when things got tough, she told people “So I'm looking around for somebody to pray with, I just need maybe a little help, maybe a little extra." Apparently God wasn't on her wavelength, or something.

I have no problem with people praying, but when they mix it with politics, I do. That's just not right, to me. As far as the Gulf is concerned, however, I have no problem. It's just strange to me that she expects God to intervene all the time.

I'm glad you have no problem with people praying so long as its done when and how you approve.

I seem to recall Patton praying for good weather, Lincoln praying to preserve the Union, and Washington praying for enough supplies to make it through a long winter.

The founders prayed for God's support and mercy, Reagan prayed for the families of fallen astronaughts. I pray before every Jury trial, not to win but that justice be done.

Seems to me expecting God to intervene all the time comes from her belief and mine that God in fact does intervene all the time.

We pray in our way and in our time. God answers in his way and in his time.

Maybe prayer wont help clean up the oil spill...or maybe it will, maybe it has.

Personally I'd rather see our President spending more time in church then on the golf course. I think that would make us better off even if we were no better off at all.

Calling her an idiot is simply a way to dismiss ideas you don't agree with or a person you don't like.

I don't think there is a shred of evidence that she lacks intellegence to any degree. She has proven herself a passionate and capable speaker and qualified leader. The mere fact that you disagree with what she says or who she leads angers you.

You find yourself intellectually unable or unwilling to make your case against their ideas (a problem most, but not all, liberals have had since the early 1980s) so you must dehumanize and debase your opponants so you can rationally dismiss those ideas you disagree with without the critical examinition you are incapable of giving.

Your world is as small as your tolerance and that my friend is a sad thing. I pray for you.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I enjoy praying for divine intervention in protecting us from the evils of the world. That having been said, I do not endorse it as a substitute for human effort, ingenuity, and perseverence. As long as we pray for aid without throwing up our own hands and responsibilities, then the prayer can only be a boon.

So, if Mrs. Palin's prayer is coupled with a determination to use the miracles she already has - her wits, personal strength, and political position -then I see no problem with it. Prayer is laudable as long as it is not a substitute for human effort, or a tool to sway minds in the absence of reason.

No. Most, but not all, liberals choose not to engage in debates with conservatives. This is not a reflection of their lack of intellegence but rather a demonstration of a deliberate choice most made after they "lost" the argument some years back.

I've argued with many liberals and enjoyed the experiance. I've learned a lot from them and I hope they've learned something from me. But far too often I encountered not an open forum or arena of ideas but rather people who refuse to even allow the debate to take place. In many ways its this failure to engage ideas that is swinging the country to the Right.

To you Sarah Palin is a woman whose daughter got pregnant, should have aborted her disabled kid, dressed in expensive clothes, quit her job, got a boob job, wrote stuff on her hand, was a beauty queen, does not read, and a hundred other things that have nothing to do with what she has to say or the ideas she is putting forth.

By comparison, to me Barrack Obama is President of the United States and whose spending is out of control, whose health plan is a disaster, whose plan to control the spill is suffering from his lack of executive experiance, who relys too much on Czars and central planning and a hundred other things that have nothing to do with a black man from Hawaii.

I can sit down and argue with Barrack Obama and be civil and respectful of the man and his ideas no matter how much I disagree with either of them. I doubt you could do the same with Sarah Palin.

Why? How does this prove your point or advance your ideas? Correcting the statement and inflaming your rhetoric has failed to serve any purpose except to further debase Sarah Palin. Now you can ignore her ideas. After all she's not your equal, not human, not worthy of the rights and respect you would give to another person.

Seeing her that way makes it so much easier for you. Its no work at all and the path of least resistance. You've had to prove nothing, you've had to defend nothing. You've in effect ceded the argument to her. She wins. Well done my friend, she wont get your vote or attention...she'll just get the attention and votes of the people (about one third more or less) who maintain an open mind.

"Well, she makes a good point," says the Moderates, "on the other hand...those other fellas got no point just some name calling, guess I'll vote Republican this time around."

Obama may have his faults, but he campaigned on ideas, I don't think he ever called Palin and McCain god-damned anything (least not in public).

Edited to add: I have described this as a liberal failing and it is for the most part. It is, however, also present to a smaller degree in other groups. For example, racists (of all colors), true sexists (the ones who think less of a particular gender...not the ones merely seeking to exploit their position), Ann Coulter, global warming scientists, me (when talking about the Pittsburg Steelers and PN), etc.

Gee, Crappy, you mean a die-hard liberal is capable of DISAGREEING with her “savior”??? Wow. When’s the last time a die-hard right-winger, or actually much of ANY right-winger, disagreed with something a Republican did (not counting the idiot who’s all over the news right now; he said what they believe, it’s just not good politics to SAY it, so they have to make a public showing of disagreeing with him).
Quote:

But far too often I encountered not an open forum or arena of ideas but rather people who refuse to even allow the debate to take place
Strangely, that’s exactly what I experience here. I don’t suppose there’s any chance that people with strong ideological leanings might be difficult to talk to? Nahh, must be just liberals.
Quote:

I’m not sure what argument we’re supposed to have “lost”. I would ask you to elaborate, but I’m afraid I’ll get something like “Trickle-down economics saved the country”.

Interestingly, there are several of us liberals here who choose to ATTEMPT to engage in debates with conservatives and everyone else on this forum. Almost every liberal I’ve ever known who’s interested in politics is willing to discuss and debate with conservatives. I don’t know where you get your opinions; perhaps your experiences have been unique, but it’s been my experience that conservatives rarely debate at all, they repeat talking points and are rarely willing to give an inch or admit anything wrong with their fellow ideologues. I don’t assume my experience speaks to all Conservatives, but obviously you feel differently.

I resent you telling me what I think about Sarah Palin. None of what you described are the reasons I dislike her; I dislike her because she didn’t finish out her term as Governor, she is making a lot of money off speaking engagements where I don’t believe she is honest about what she says; things like dumping the crowd who came to her book signing; that she is unilaterally right-wing in her SPEECH at least (I really have no idea what she BELIEVES); that she has said things about other people which are rude and cruel; that her loyalties have shifted too many times to count (for example; McCain campaign, Tea Party); that the ideology she puts forth isn’t good for our country, and more. I also resent your, unfortunately typical, assumptions, denigrations and generalization of liberals. Buzz words are irrelevant.

No, I wouldn’t CHOOSE to debate Palin; the reason being that I don’t respect her enough to do so. I’d be quite willing to debate any number of Conservatives or Republicans, and have tried to do so here. Unfortunately, here at least what we tend to get back are attacks and “talking points”, few actual debate points or possibility of communication.

We mock Sarah Palin because she has given reason to be mocked. You notice we rarely mock McCain? I lost respect for him when he sold out to the GOP machine and took Palin on, and now when he is lying about ever being a Maverick and back-pedaling on so many of his previous stands, but I still have respect for his knowledge and intelligence. Not so Palin. She has shown her lack of knowledge and somewhat skewed thinking so many times that she totally lost any respect I might have had for her not long after she first appeared on stage. I checked her out early on, believe me. I don't just take a liking or disliking to candidates, and I don't dislike her for ANY of the reasons yu cited. But just like Bush, she condemns herself with her own words:

"As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border." --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience.

"The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down Syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide, based on a subjective judgment of their 'level of productivity in society,' whether they are worthy of health care. Such a system is downright evil." –-Sarah Palin, in a message posted on Facebook THERE WERE NO DEATH PANELS and she was well aware of that...or else she IS stupid; which is it?

"All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years." --Sarah Palin, unable to name a single newspaper or magazine she reads.

"Well, let's see. There's ― of course in the great history of America there have been rulings that there's never going to be absolute consensus by every American, and there are those issues, again, like Roe v. Wade, where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So, you know, going through the history of America, there would be others but ―" --Sarah Palin, unable to name a Supreme Court decision she disagreed with other than Roe vs. Wade

"Who calls a shot like that? Who makes a decision like that? It's a disturbing trend." –Sarah Palin, pushing a conspiracy theory that "In God We Trust" had been moved to the edge of coins by the Obama administration (the change was made by the Bush administration in 2007 and was later reversed by Congress, before Obama took office)

"I think on a national level your Department of Law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we've been charged with and automatically throw them out." --Sarah Palin, referring to a department that does not exist while attempting to explain why as president she wouldn't be subjected to the same ethics investigations

"Go back to what our founders and our founding documents meant -- they're quite clear -- that we would create law based on the God of the bible and the Ten Commandments." –-Sarah Palin, arguing that Judeo-Christian belief was the basis for American law and should continue to be used as a guiding force for creating future legislation

"It may be tempting and more comfortable to just keep your head down, plod along, and appease those who demand: 'Sit down and shut up,' but that's the worthless, easy path; that's a quitter's way out." --Sarah Palin, announcing her resignation as governor

There is so much more, but it’s not worth taking the time. I recognized her inexperience and inappropriateness as Vice President by many of the things she said, her obvious lack of understanding of how government works, what the role of the VP is, what Bush’s doctrine was, and so much more. So I looked into her. So many things came up, I dismissed her.

Where on EARTH did you get the idea anyone considers her “not human”? That’s insane and shows how your mind works and what your attitudes are.

As to calling Palin or McCain anything, my gawd, all you have to do is look at just a COUPLE of the comments both of them made about Obama to see how absurd that claim is. Should we list them for you? Yet I didn’t hear Obama call either of them anything unkind—they made up and mischaracterized things he said, like the “lipstick on a pig” thing—which is an old saying, used previously by McCain himself, and I don’t doubt had NOTHING to do with Palin, as one can tell by just observing Obama. Whatever else he is, he’s invariably polite and didn’t take the bait on any of the lies and shadings McCain/Palin lumped on him.

Omigawd, I just saw your reply. That's it for me; anyone who thinks Reagan "saved the country" is not capable of debating. I have responded to your contentions, that's as much time as I will spend. I've already taken the time to post details of how Reagan and Trickle Down damaged the country, I'm not going to bother again.
